ADSactly Food - πŸ’œ Homemade Granola and The Origin of Breakfast πŸ’œ

in #food β€’ 7 years ago

cover.jpg

Breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day across the world. In this week's Adsactly Foodie Post, I'll explore the origin of breakfast, different variations across the world, and of course, my recipe for my Homemade Honey and Almond Granola.

01.jpg

From Wikipedia:

The Old English word for dinner, disner, means to break a fast, and was the first meal eaten in the day until its meaning shifted in the mid-13th century. It was not until the 15th century that β€œbreakfast” came into use in written English to describe a morning meal, which literally means to break the fasting period of the prior night; in Old English the term was morgenmete meaning "morning meal."

I personally LOVE breakfast, and really like to cook up different dishes every Sunday. Some of my favourites include creamy scrambled eggs on rye with chives, Eggs Benedict with Salmon, and pancakes with bacon,
strawberries and maple syrup. Those are very much weekend breakfasts
though, and during the week I will stick to my Overnight Oats or this here Granola recipe.

Across Northern Africa, different types of flatbreads are eaten with beans, tahini (Egypt), and baba ganoush (Israel). In places like Senegal and Somalia, spiced teas and coffees are favoured to start the day. I love Shakshuka, a traditional North African breakfast dish, which has its roots in Israel. Eggs baked in a spicy tomato mixture, served with lovely fresh bread.

In China, steamed buns, pancakes and porridges are served, often accompanied by a noodle soup and tea. I've always wanted to try Congee, a Chinese breakfast porridge, slow cooked, and made from rice, often including a thousand year old egg. I am not entirely sure if I could try the century old egg, but I like to think I will give everything a try at least once!

Then, of course, how could I write a breakfast post without mentioning the good ol' English Breakfast. Beef sausages, bacon, eggs, beans, toast and a fried tomato, and even sometimes fried mushrooms too. Commonly acknowledged as the best hangover cure, the English are known for a proper fry up. I, personally, cannot handle such a huge breakfast, so will choose either bacon and eggs, or beans and eggs. Them English certainly do know how to clog the arteries.

And, how could I even mention breakfast without accolading our American friends? Cornflakes, griddled pancakes with bacon, breakfast burritos, nu-wave Cali smoothie bowls, and New Yorker bagels with lox. We have our friend Dr John Harvey Kellogg to thank for inventing first granola, and then the famed Corn Flakes.

Today I am going to show you how to make my favourite honey and almond granola. It is super simple and tasty AF. I make it every Sunday for the coming week. The cinnamony fragrance wafts through my apartment while I sip my Rooibos tea and read my book, telling me to take it slowly. AAAHHHH, Sundaze.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups oats
  • 3/4 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/4 cup chopped pumpkin seeds
  • 1 T linseeds
  • 3/4 cup whole almonds
  • 1/4 cup whole pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup coconut shavings
  • 1 t cinnamon
  • 1 t salt
  • 3 T butter
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 t vanilla essence

METHOD

Preheat your oven to 325'F/165'C. Lay a greased sheet of baking paper onto a baking tray.
Combine the chopped nuts, seeds, oats, coconut shavings, cinnamon and salt in a large mixing bowl.

02.jpeg

In a small saucepan, heat the butter, honey, oil and sugar until the sugar dissolves and this mixture starts to boil. Add your vanilla essence and give the mixture a stirring.

03.GIF

Add the mixture, bit by bit, and mix evenly, ensuring all dry ingredients are covered with the honey mixture.

04.GIF

Lay the mixture on the baking sheet, spreading it evenly.

05.jpeg

Bake for twenty-five minutes, tossing twice. The mixture will seem wet still when you take it out of the oven, this is the way it is supposed to be - don't be tempted to bake further. It will dry out within half an hour of being removed.

06.jpeg

Once your mixture has rested and is nice and crumbly, you can move it to it's storage jar.

11.jpeg

This granola is so versatile and can be used in a quite a few ways. I serve with plain yoghurt and fruit, or mix with raw oats and cocoa, and a little almond milk. My hubs likes it mixed into his bran flakes.

10.jpeg

🍜Hope you enjoyed my post about breakfast. I'd love to hear what you in eat in your country for your morning meal?🍜

Yes!

Oh yes . Thanks

It's time we started to move away from meat breakfast even if they are cultural, the healthiest and most filling breakfasts are, things like the lovely granola example.

Anyone interested in understanding why meat is not sustainable take a look at my recent article....

Me too!!!

That is an amazing looking breakfast. Very well done.

Thank you so much x

Great work! In some developing countries, especially in the poor suburbs, having breakfast is not even an option, since people have to work first before they can eat that day. Some are just not used to having breakfast. I wonder if they'd refuse this one though. Looks pretty awesome!

Fab post - I'm currently travelling in India and will try your granola recipe once I'm back in the UK - of course only after a visit to my local caf for a Full English Fry Up !! ( my mouth is watering thinking about it and seeing your image ...
Below is my Indian Breakfast this morning called Puri Bhaji - was delicious πŸ˜‹

In Turkey there is similar like this .We are calling it pişi.!

sketch-1517062724998.png

Hi, looks very similar - I visited Turkey last year but didn't see this. If I'm lucky to go to visit again soon I will be sure to Try it πŸ’πŸ»

Hi,
Where did you come in Turkey?

I have never heard of this before! What does the Puri consist of ?

Food Morning dubvdave!!!
It typical of south India but you can find across India and is made with a few ingredients only - whole wheat flour ( atta) salt and water - Not forgetting Ghee to fry (Indian oil ) which though oily is essential (it's a treat for me while here - twice a week) And I realised 3 puri (poori) is my limit πŸ˜‹
Stayed tuned as I'm making my way through Indian breakfasts - just done a morning run and not decided as yet what I'll have today ! πŸ€”
Sonic Sonny πŸ’πŸ»

Sounds really interesting. Putting it on my list to look out for...looking forward to your future posts Sonic!

I love Puri. Very easy to make them. You mix whole wheat flour, a bit of salt, and 1 tbsp oil. Then form the dough by mixing water slowly and kneading to result in not too dry or soft dough. Then make the small balls from it and roll each one into not too thin circle (around 6 inch in diameter) . And finally deep fry them in oil.

What's in it @sonic-sonny?

Hello iseektruth - sorry for delay, I've been on the move - there are 4 main ingredients - wheat flour - salt - water and Ghee for frying.
Simple making also just need a little time to prepare :)
πŸ’πŸ» Sonic Sonny

Oh ok @sonic-sonny! How's weather where you're at?

Feeling ....Hot Hot Hot 🎼🎢🎡

Oh wow @sonic-sonny! Are you talking about the #music or your that's #hot? #LMBO! #LOLZ! Sorry I'm too much in the comment section. I have too much energy. #SMH!

Hi, looks very similar - I visited Turkey last year but didn't see this. If I'm lucky to go to visit again soon I will be sure to Try it πŸ’πŸ»

Wow thanks for the lovely writeup on the history of breakfast , In this age and time , the fastest breakfast meal to prepare is probably the most popular, there is always not enough time for the morning rush and people just want to get out of the house in time.

Great post! Didn't know that dinner used to be breakfast :D You learn something new every day i suppose :)

We learn til we die, and we die if we don't learn. You can quote me on that πŸ˜‡

Yes i agree becuase everyday is a great opportunity to learn something from our day to day activities. Learning is a continuous process. We just have to explore and discover what life offers us.

absolutely!

Love that quote. And if we're not learning we're not living! You got a new follow. :)

I always think the idea of noodles and soup is too much for breakfast! I am always willing to try though!

You never fail to impress me ❀️ In Southeast Asia, especially in the Philippines, our breakfast includes lugaw (rice porridge), pan de sal (or salt buns! A local version of the French Baguette), and kape (aka coffee!). πŸ™‚ And that’s just a very basic breakfast. We love our morning meals HUGE.

I’ve been incorporating granola in my breakfast recently because I wanted to have a variety of flavors every morning (a shift from our usual Filipino breakfast, haha). Thanks for sharing some tips and more! 😊

PS: In the Philippines, breakfast is β€œalmusal”, which was roughly translated from the Spanish term β€œalmorzar” (which means snack!). That’s some Nice To Know 😊

Again, stay awesome ✨

thank you for this. I love learning about other people's cultures :) I saw that the Philippines was was once a Spanish colony, and that is why you have so many Spanish names and places. One day I was watching a documentary about the Philippines and was so confused because all the surnames were Lopez and other SPanish names. Then I looked it up and read the history. Interesting!

This breakfast looks very delicious and yummy.... thank you Sharing

Thank you for your post. :) I have voted for you: 🎁! To call me just write @contentvoter in a comment.

Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)Β

Very good article!! Also, nice to know about those cultures and theirs breakfast.
I always wanted to try making homemade granola but never had the time. But I guess you just convinced me. It looks so yummy and crunchy and yummy again! Do you think i would be a problem if I replace the brown sugar with same quantity of honey? :)

no not at all. I was actually thinking to do that, and also to replace the canola oil with coconut oil. It is healthyish as is, but I'd like to make it even more healthy. I make a batch every Sunday, so this week I will try that. I can let you know the outcome :)

Hey, Yes! I would love that!:)
And for sure I'll try this out! Also for me it's kind of better using coconut oil since I love the taste + I have a lot of it. I knew I have to make these one day and get used to the recipe. Cause then it wont be hard to do it again you know? It's always this way, when you cook something new. You need to do it once to be comfortable with the method and stuff. At least, this is me.:d Thank you again:)
Cheers form Romania:x

Surely nice ... is this your homemade recipe?

yes, completely made from scratch in my very small kitchen! :)

Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)Β

Amazing .. I like your posts

Thanks..

The cup from the yoghurt is so nice blue, is that a real "Delftsblauw"?

I am not sure. I don't think so, as I bought it on a flea market for about 4 euro :)

I actually just looked,, and it was made in England.

I wish I had a Delft bowl!

Thats a pity, but yoghurt will taste probably the same ,.. or there something about the eye and food ,...

Well to be very honest My Great Friend @princessmewmew I did not know the origin of the word Breakfast (Break a fast) before.

Well in my breakfast i take a cup of tea with fried chapati and a boil egg.

But after looking at this dish you shared in your blog my appetite is increasing and my mouth watered at once ;)

Thanks alot Princess

that is a lovely comment, thank you. Tell me more about chapati please?

Look at this pic Princess, This is Paratha ( Fried Chapati with ghee :)

oohhh I see! Looks yummy!

Wow. Outcome tells us its worth to prepare. Well i'm not sure if you wanna see breakfast culture of my country but here it is :
yesilkoy-van-kahvalti-evi-yemek-mekan-istanbul-budaviva-1.jpg
this is the basic version of it. You can add more stuff :)

omgosh! that looks amazing!!! what is the central dish?

It's called "menemen" in Turkish.

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon hot paprika
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
1 small onion, finely diced (about 3/4 cup)
3/4 cup finely diced shishito, padrΓ³n, or Chinese green long pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh ripe peeled tomatoes or drained canned tomatoes
4 eggs, lightly beaten
Minced fresh chives, for garnish (optional)

Preparing:

In a medium non-stick or cast iron skillet, heat olive oil over low heat until barely warm. Add paprika, oregano, onion, and peppers. Season with salt and a very generous amount of black pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until very soft, about 8 minutes. Add tomatoes and continue to cook, stirring frequently, until deepened in color. Remove half of mixture and reserve.

2
Return pan to heat and add eggs. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until just barely set. Immediately remove from heat and gently fold in reserved vegetable mixture. Sprinkle with chives, if using, and serve immediately.

I strongly recommend you to try sometime. It a bit heavy for breakfast but worth to try :) Mostly served with a cup of tea.

ohmygosh thank you very much! I will make this on Sunday - I am super super excited for this. Thank you !!

Followed you :)

Thank you you are so sweet and kind :) You should try more food from Turkish kitchen. I'm not saying because i live in there really, it is really unique. Our breakfast culture is extraordinary, because it's the most important meal of the day. Waiting for your new posts and i might recommend you more recipes :)

lovely post @adsactly

That looks Amazing. I Love to eat Healthy and try my best to stay in shape as I am entering the Later Years of My Life. Thanks for the recipe and very informative post @Adsactly.

its a pleasure, and thank you for your comment! Nice to see Adsactly community members in the comments

It turns out that cat is really the BEST breakfast food ...

Haha that was all kinds of weird πŸ˜‚

This is even weirder - "food having sex" ...

heheeh okeeey den!

I love granola! My wife (@freedomtowrite) makes an amazing granola with pecans and dried fruit πŸ€—. As far as breakfast goes, we both intermittent fast. We have breakfast at noon and dinner around 6. The structure has changed our lives, and the experience has pushed us to see what the rest of the world eats. We have gotten off of 'american breakfast' and moved toward fruit, veg, hummus, breads. Great post, thank you for a great new recipe!

wow! That sounds super interesting. I think I might like the breakfast ritual of coffee and reading through Steemit more than the actual food!

Thank you for your thoughtful comment

You are very welcome! This week I have also cut down on my coffee. So in the morning I cruise Steemit and drink warm honey water..I love it.

ah sounds like how I eat when we fast. I Love coffee soo much! When you're fasting you really realise how much you love food lol

breakfast can be safely called the main meal. If you eat right in the morning, you get the energy for the whole day. The correct morning meal is an impulse to achieve day plans and goals.
Looking at your recipe, the first thing that comes to mind is quality work. Everything is described in detail and the animations and pictures complement the text, as the seasoning complements the dish. I liked it, it looks very appetizing - a useful pledge of good health tomorrow. I have not tried this dish, but I'm sure it's delicious.
Thank you @princessmewmew

thank you for your nice comment, I appreciate your feed back very much

Ah, Shakshuka is amazing. I will defo try this granola though. I have always wanted to make my own!

oooh, i love me a good Shakshuka. Made it for my hubs and his brother, who are totally bacon and eggs kinda guys, and they were confused... πŸ˜‘πŸ˜‘πŸ˜‘

Hahahaha, I would have been over the moon!!

Well, well, well.
All pretty, pretty, pretty!
Pretty author, pretty foods, pretty words!

Time for celebration!
Eating time!

hehehe I love Mr Bean, and I specifically remember this episode, it was hilarious. Thank you for your lovely comment!

Oh yeah!

Thank you for this, I have been looking up trying to find healthier breakfast items for my son. So many of the kids he knows have like processed food breakfast things. Will def be using this!

Amazing! It's super simple and smells amazing. Let me know if you make it!

Copy and pasted recipe to me wife, cause she is the boss hehe...

hehe! Awesome. You will be surprised how delicious and easy it is.. I promise

Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)Β

i will definitly try it,, thnx @princessmewmew😻 for sharing

Your granola looks really scrumptious @adsactly but I've read that heating up honey causes some of its ferments to release hydroxymethylfurfural which is bad for the human body. Great recipe though.

hmmm that sounds like something to research. thank you for this info, and thank you for your comment!

locks and bagels and crème cheese. Only thing you are missing is the capers.

hey! its my friend who thinks my wedding ring is gross! Hi! How are you?

I must admit, I love capers, and the combination you suggested is amazing

Smile, friend!

As you said, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In my country, Venezuela the most typical forΒ‘ breakfast arepas.

ooh, i just looked that up. Looks like cute little pancakes. thanks for your comment, it means a lot

As the saying goes "Breakfast like a king, dinner like a pauper," we,Filipinos take breakfast really seriously. I mean, since we are a thirld world country,we have to move our bodies more. That would include transportation or the main work itself. With that being said, we invest on carbohydrates for an added ATP. Our normal menu will be rice, dried fish, eggs, vegetables, bread, etc. This is after a cup of coffee that jumpstarts our mornings.

sounds lovely. Here in South Africa we also have a version of dried fish, and I love it

AMAZING! meal, Try adding some Banana and Berries to this + a spoonful of hemp seeds to finish it off. Delectable.

that sounds lovely. I often add chia seeds soaked in coconut water and linseeds too. Thank you Liam!

I eat instant oats with flax seed cinnamon, and honey every morning. I sometimes cheat and have a bagel with fried egg and churizo on the weekends. Most important meal of the day. Choose wisely!!

that sounds derrricious! I love my cheeky weekend breakfasts

Mmmmm looks delicious and easy to make. A must try. In Malaysia we love our nasi lemak (rice steam in coconut milk) for breakfast. Thank you for sharing

that sounds amazing. I loovoveee coconut anything!

I will post about nasi lemak soon. oooo i love everything about food.

Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)Β

Great post!

I could watch that GIF of the honey mixture for days @princessmewmew haha. Going to try this out over the weekend!

yay! please do let me know how it goes. I love making food gifs. They are super mesmerising.

We read your post and now we want to eat sooooo much :/ hahaha well nice post ! love it ! :)

Woow really magic, you are an artist ;)

why thank you kind sir!

Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)Β

a very good post with a very clear and complete explanation of his food
do not forget to also try our typical local food "TIMPHAN ACEH" which tastes also not inferior to eating another. with its very traditional manufacturing process.
kue-timphan-khas-aceh_jokjaicon1.jpg

hmm, interesting! What is exactly TIMPHAN ACEH?

actually just a dessert cake more delicious with a cup of typical aceh coffee. ACEH TIMPHAN made from selected flour with the contents of its sweetened coconut milk is then mashed with banana leaf before boiling. if there is a visit to aceh indonesia I can provide it until I show the process of making a very traditional.

This looks amazingly great for the bowels.

STEEMIT-BLOGGERS-GIF.gif

IF = Intermittent Fasting
Nothing for breakfast, as we are late eaters and like to go to bed with a fully belly. When you go to bed full, you won't wake up hungry, so a cup of coffee with a few drops of half n half is all we have until about 2pm.
We're not crazy, IF is being practised by a lot of people who like the benefits of daily fasting, particularly on days you aren't doing a lot of exercise. Combined with eating better (more raw) foods in general, intermittent fasting is a great and relatively easy way to lose wieght and feel good.

Benefits:
#1 Easier to lose weight, as you don't adhere to all the fake-science old wives' tales that skipping a meal is bad for you. People have been skipping meals since the beginning of time, your body is built to store reserves, and needs to USE THEM occassionally.

#2 It's painless and actually makes you more alert and active during day
There's no energy like no energy. Not eating food can make you tired over an extended period, like days, but in the morning thru midday it actually heightens your senses. This is probably genetic, as it allowed for finer concentration in hunting/gathering, such that you could function perfectly to feed yourself in tough situations.

#3 Old Wives Tales
almost everything you hear thats good for you, isn't. That includes eating "3 squares". If you're going to be training or doing strenuous stuff during the day, then surely you should eat more often, and think about eating before strain/work/workouts. But most people don't have very physically taxing lives anymore, so less is more.

#4 No stretchy stomach
If you CONSTANTLY eat, you're stomach can expand and it can take more to make you feel good from eating. This is a downward spiral, and leads to a place where you're not even sure you're actually hungry when you eat. We went thru years without skipping meals, and remember forcing ourselves to eat when we weren't actually hungry, simply bc some talking head said you shouldn't skip meals. NONSENSE! Eat when you're hungry, not when you're not hungry. Ask any kid!

When we DO eat, we feel great, and we eat as much as we want. It's a great relieving feeling to stop doing what OTHERS tell you is right, and start paying attention to your instincts.

On the flip side, if you go hours after your last meal before going to bed, you'll prolly wake up hungry, you're probably a morning person. If you can not eat for 4 hours before going to bed, and sleep 8 hours, then IF may not be for you, as you're actually kinda doing IF in your sleep.

Look it up on YouTube, it's very cool and the people doing it are looking and functioning great. It's natural, and combined with eating good natural local mostly raw foods (meat too!), you'll feel much better.
Our first meal? sometimes it's a fruit & veggie smoothie, sometimes it's bacon and eggs with sour dough 2-ingredient bread-toast (water, flour).
While bacon is a preserved meat, we gotta live a little!

In my opinion, breakfast violates the law of fasting.
From the word itself, breakfast means breaking the fast.
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." I guess its a food industry slogan.

Wow! I can eat this the whole day

Now I'm drooling!This looks so #foodporn worthy @adsactly! #LMBO!

I follow your recipes fondly. My wife prepared the last recipe you gave. It was really delicious. Thank you for this beautiful recipe. I'll show my wife these recipes. She's interested in cooking at our house. I do what my dear wife said. :))) Yes our house patron she :))))
