Visit the Minack Theatre

in Worldmappin29 days ago

When my family told me " You have to visit the Minack Theatre" and showed me photos of it, like the one below, it didn't look very appealing to me. It's the shot everyone takes when they enter the site. Not wanting to be rude to my family, "Ok, I'll see what my schedule and weather is like during my stay in Cornwall"

Visit the Minack Theatre at last

After a few castle hopping, one day I figured I'd do something different, and decided to check out the Minack Theatre. It's located at Porthcurno which is at the very south western tip of UK accessible by small country roads, and a rather steep and winding drive up to the cliff top. The drive here was an experience in itself.

Just to give you some idea, the Minack Theatre is an outdoor theatre built by hand tools, on a cliff right next to the sea. The photo above was taken at the entrance, that's the red dot at the top of this layout plan below. The garden and the seats are built in the cliff, and the stage is further down towards the sea. I don't know how deep the drop is from top to bottom, but the internet says there are 90 steps. I didn't count, but that sounds about right.

This photo gives you a better idea of how steep the theatre is. You do not want to trip and fall because it's all stone, the grass is just a very thin layer, it won't give you any buffer...

and should you unfortunately fall, this is where you might end up if you roll all the way down!!! Ok, just joking, there are some barriers, but still, trust me, you don't want to trip and fall here.

Getting to know Rowena better

After a quick walk around outside, I headed inside the Rowena Cade Exhibition Center to get a better understanding of what the Minack Theatre is all about. This is the best place to start, because it tells you about who Rowena Cade is - the lady who built this theatre. You can read more about it here, but the TL:DR version is that Rowena lived at the Minack headland and was into theatre production for the locals. She wanted to build an outdoor theater and figured the cliff would be the perfect setting.

Rowena started realising her vision at the beginning of the 1930s. She was a tough and determined grafter and built all this using hand tools. She bought sand up from the beach to make the cement for the seats, and etched drawings and writing on them using a screwdriver. Others helped, of course, but no heavy machinery was involved. This model inside the exhibition center will give you an idea on the scale of this amazing feat. Rowena was still chiselling away when she was in her 80s, and after she died in 1983, her legacy and vision still continues today.

A tour of the Minack Theatre

Now that I had a greater understanding of the how and why of the Minack Theatre, I went back outside to get a look a better look and appreciation of the place. Everything meant a lot more to me now.

I could visualise people sitting here watching a play or performance. They happen between Easter and October, with additional shows at Christmas. It must be so awesome to sit outdoors here, literally, within nature, listening to the wind and waves as background music to the performance. The seats are carpeted with fresh grass that is replaced every spring, and the seats nearer down to the stage are all hand built with rocks and cement by Rowena and her team.

On one of the building walls and seats, they had etched the names and date of the plays that were played here previously.

Although made of stone, the seats were surprisingly quite comfortable, and ergonomically fitting. What I admired most was the attention of to detail in making each seat, and the drawing etched around it.

Afternoon cuppa

As much as I enjoyed walking around the theatre, it was a bit chilly and wet. And like all Brits, I needed my afternoon cuppa. That's a cup of tea for your non Brits. You can always get a good cup of tea when you're on holiday around England. The cafe at the Minack Theatre had an incredible view looking out to the sea and it was very welcoming to sit inside the warmth.

Tips to visit the Minack Theatre

If you want to visit the Minack Theatre, you have to book in advance, particularly if you're driving or want to see one of the performances. You can also catch a bus to Porthcurno and walk the steep hill up to the Minack Theatre. Entry tickets cost £10 and is valid for repeat entries during the year. Make sure to check the opening times here first because they're not open every day during the off peak season. It's a bit of a trek, but it's worth it. I'm glad I came.

Wow, it's simply wonderful! I've never seen in real something similar, but I hope to do it in the future. Really a beauty. ❤️

It's quite surreal here, I'm glad I came here in the end

Wow, that's pretty cool. It reminds me of a dark sky park we have up north from where I life. Of course this is a lot older and the hand carving adds a ton of character to it, but the setting is kind of similar.

I really like how she carved the drawings every where, it's so creative and unique. Is the one near you facing the sea as well?

Yes, it is right on the shores of Lake Michigan. Amazing views!

That looks a lot more comfortable, and great for stargazing in the summer

I think the thing that surprised me most was the number of snakes. We were there during he day and there were dozens getting warm on the rocks along the shore. Makes me wonder what they do at night in the dark when I can't see! Yikes!

So cool. I saw a lot about the theater as I was researching Cornwall. So fun you went. That model really shows how steep it is. It is amazing when someone has a vision and a goal what they can do!

There's so much to see and do in Cornwall, it must be difficult to choose, but I guess since you had a very clear objective, your trip was planned around that.

"built all this using hand tools... bought sand up from the beach to make the cement for the seats, and etched drawings and writing on them using a screwdriver... no heavy machinery was involved."

That is amazing! 😯 All that work is phenomenal!

Yeah, it's pretty incredible, the landscape is treacherous there, and she was climbing up and down from the beach,

I LOVE this theatre, it's such a stunning place!

One for your list when you're next over?

No I love it because I've been!!!

That's an amazing feat, LUT! I'm sure you were happy that you listened to your family. I can just imagine how special it would be to watch a show there in summertime! They must have a very good sound system for times when the sea is rough.
What stunning views as well, very special!

I am in deed, no wonder two different members told me on different occasions. It's quite unique.

Rowena was a perfectionist and I believe the sound system has to be protected very well because of the sea and wind

We saw a performance of Macbeth there many years ago. That made for a nice atmosphere with some guys fishing on the rocks below. The little roads around Cornwall are not made for lots of traffic though. Not been back to that area for a while.

Oh! That's so nice, bet you've never seen Macbeth anywhere so special. Hope it was a good performance.

I think that what makes Cornwall so charming, that it doesn't have a motorway cutting through it, but yeah, driving can be a bit of a challenge at times

WOW, a theater so close to the sea, how amazing! It must definitely have a totally different vibe from a closed theater in the middle of the city!

I wished I could have seen a performance there, I reckon it would be pretty awesome

One of the coolest locations for a theatre I have seen. Hopefully, the waves are not too loud for the audience to enjoy the performances there. The stage looks close to the water in those shots.

The stage is by the edge, but there's a big drop to the sea. It was quite windy when I was there, and the waves weren't too noisy. I think maybe when the weather bis really bad, maybe they cancel the shows... I'm not sure.

It would still be some experience in bad weather hehe. I would pay for that.

I can’t believe it was all built by hand — that’s so inspiring. I’d love to visit a place like this someday, it feels straight out of a movie

After I learnt about the background, I had a whole new level of appreciation for the whole place. Before that, I wasn't too bothered I went or not when my family told me. I'm so glad I did in the end

Wonderful! Its been donkeys years since I was there. Cable and Wireless had a training centre at Porthcurno which is why I originally discovered it. I have seen a couple of amateur shows performed there when I was a bit of an amateur thesp myself. When the stage is lit it's a whole new level.

It's great that the spirit of Rowena Made lives on and the theatre is still used by her beloved local am-dram groups.

Waiting for the museum visit, next :-)

Learning new things about you every day!

I think that training centre is probably the museum now. I saw it on the way and was very tempted to go as my career started with submarine cables. It was quite late by the time we left Minack and it would have cost us £24 which seemed a bit steep ( yeah. I'm tight as well so 😄). So sorry, no post on that. I can offer you Osborne House instead. That will be coming... some time in the future

I’m amazed by what Rowena and her team accomplished. Just imagine, that huge outdoor theatre was built entirely by hand, without any heavy machinery. I can only imagine how difficult and challenging it must have been to build it, especially since the area is very steep. Thanks to her and her team, because for sure, so many people are enjoying that beautiful place.

Very true in deed

What a view and what a gorgeous place. We never did get there when we were in Cornwall, probably because it just rained and rained! Yea a nice cuppa is a must on days like that!

That must have been a bummer for you, to come all the way for the rain. Don't you just love the great British weather. What would we do without a cuppa!

Two weeks in August in Devon and Cornwall take my parents to the Eden project and other places for Mrs T to see and it rained like buggery. We even had to into a town and buy some winter clothes at one point. British weather at its finest lol!

As someone who loves theatre, this is definitely on my bucket list. The view looks breathtaking 😍 Hopefully, I’ll get to visit and catch a show there someday!

A theater goer would definitely love this place

Thanks so much Kim and Worldmappin team!

You're welcome LUT ❤️

It looks so good.
Huge project especially for handmade work.
I assume work on the acoustics was important and calculated as sea sound and wind are there. You can that stage has sort of stone cover on the side toward the sea .
Would not mind visiting one day.
Nice photos.

A unique and excellent place for taking photos. Thanks for sharing. I hope I can visit someday.
