The chardonnay's of today are not like the chardonnays of yester-year. There are a lot of wineries that use steel fermentation tanks for chardonnays now which reduce the butteryness considerably, and you are still left with a great crisp wine with just a hint of that lushness. My brother had the same complaint as you but I made him try a few of the younger ones and won him back over.

the thought of chardonnay makes me feel sick .... and I didn't taste it in the past 9 years. But I will try find a wine that comes from steel fermented tanks. You have any suggestions?
@ella-kay - one you can find at the grocery store A to Z Oregon Chardonnay (it's unoaked). My favorite is Passaggio's Unoaked Chardonnay (passaggiowines.com) but her wines are only available online or at the winery. Just look for "unoaked."
