Winning On The Road

in #travel5 years ago
A couple years ago while traveling cross country in the US I decided to stop for gas near a Casino I had went to once before. So after topping off the tank I went in the Casino and looked around a bit. Not being to excited about slot machines and not seeing the crap tables from a year earlier I decided I would go to the buffet.
The lunch buffet was quite good and after overeating I paid and walked back into the gaming area. Deciding that I would play a little I walked over to the $1 machines put in a hundred bucks thinking it would not take long to loose it. After playing for about 30 minutes I had $151.00 in credit on the slot machine. Being completely bored I cashed out (printed ticket) and started looking for the cashier to get my $151.00!!
However on the way I noticed the High Stakes slots in a side room. Thinking "what the hell" I went in and found the highest slot machine that was there. They happened to be $25.00 per credit slot and you could play up to 3 credits per spin. Even I could do the math on that, so I can do 2 spins, cash out my one dollar and leave the casino down $99.00. Seams reasonable to me.
I selected one of the five or so 25 dollar slots and inserted my ticket with 151 dollars on it, took a breath, bet 3 credits and pushed Play. As the wheels spun I quickly thought "your about to lose the gas money you just won", when all of a sudden the machine lights up and bells start ringing... and I had just won $75.00, the same amount I had bet!
Taking a moment to nurture that previous thought about having won 51 bucks, that was more than enough to pay for the gas and buffet and knowing that if only for a moment in time I was ahead in life!
But no I would not accept rational thought, I pushed Play again! Again the machine lit up like a christmas tree and the bell rang a little longer. When the numbers stopped clicking I realised that I Had just won $600.00! OMG
After previously throwing 75 dollars to the wind and the wind brought me the exact same amount yet I was as happy as a six year old boy getting a ride on a fire truck. How can that be? Okay we know, please don't answer that.
At this point I needed no rationalization to play more. The next 4 spins were losers and panic attacks had now leveled out into Stage-7 depression as 300 dollars of my winnings were gone.
Accepting that I had little in life to live for as hopes and dreams crashed all around me I did the unthinkable, I pushed Play.
At this point I just wanted this chapter of my life to be over and knowing that the two little old ladies playing near me would smile with glee when I walked out of the High Stakes slot room penny less and beaten again in the game of life.
I am sure the wheel always spin the same amount of time but they seemed to go forever this time adding to my tormented existence. Then alas the wheels stopped spinning and to my complete disbelief the lights started flashing and the bells were ringing, and ringing, and ringing and ringing. Both of the little old ladies rush over with one grabbing my arm and squeezing it as if though it were her grandchild while telling me how happy she was for me. I must admit that in the midst of all this excitement I felt a little ashamed for the bad thought I had for her just moments ago.
After what seemed an eternity the bells went silent but the lights were still flashing and the slot screen had a message for me, I had just won $24,000.00! OMG while I was quite excited internally my external emotions were rather calm. With the one lady still holding my arm the other one advised that she would go to get an attendant.
While I waited my mind was racing with thought and opportunities none of which included putting one cent of my winnings back into the slot machines.
Shortly two casino attendants and a manager showed up inspected the machine then counted out $24,000.00 in cash and congratulated me on my winnings.
Luckily having worn loose pants for the trip, I stuffed the 24k in the right front pocket, cashed out on the slot machine and made a straight line for the cashier to collect the remaining money.
With my pockets full of cash I walked out of the casino. I am not sure why but the sun seemed a little brighter and the air was just a little sweeter.
