Hello Steemit Friends,
My parents drove by it with me in the back seat numerous of times. I love waving my hands out to touch the winds as my mom yells at me to pull in back into the vehicle. If you ever travel to Phuket car, you will have to cross over the Sarasin bridge.
Nowadays there is two bridges besides one another. The old bridge was built in 1967, it’s 600 meters long. In 2011 a new bridge was added calling it The Thepkasattri Bridge and the previous was renovated, with the middle area being raised higher and a watch tower installed.
Some people say that the Sarasin Bridge love story is a myth, and many believes that it is real. The story starts with two people, Dam was a poor man who is local bus driver. Gew was a wealthy girl who was going back and forth to a college and took Dam’s bus ride. As old school as it is, her parents expected her to marry someone from a moneyed background as well.
The two met and got to know each other over time and started falling in love. After revealing their feelings, both sought to Gew’s father for permission an blessing for married. Her father refused and forbidden them from seeing each other.
The couple decided that if they couldn’t be together, they would take their lives. This story there’s even a date, on February 22nd 1973, they tide themselves together and jumped over the Sarasin Bridge.
This story has even been made to a Thai love story and the bridge became a tourist attraction. Sarasin bridge became not only symbol of a connection between mainland and island but also rich and poor; life and death.
The sasarin bridge is best to visit late afternoon before the sunset as the sky turns purple and pink mixing with the blue. Apart from the bridge there isn’t much going on but the locals fishing, boats passing by beneath and small local shops. There is a restaurant right beside where we stopped for fresh coconuts and sat on the swing by the beach. Ever place, city, town or island is filled with stories.. What is yours ?.
I hope you enjoy This post !!
Thank you for your comments and votes
Much love, Suzana
awww that is a sad love story :( like romeo juliet... but different! Love that last photo especially.. rope swings are so fun!
Thank you so much <3
Such a touching story. Love reminded me of Romeo and Juliet. How often do parents harm their children, perceiving them as their property. Although it is necessary to give freedom of choice. I feel sorry for those lovers.
Yes !! It is similar to many love stories. We still see parents doing it to these days. Some people just dont know how to do it.
Oww, you have just reminded me how beautiful Phuket really is - I haven't been there for over two years! Oh, god - and here I am - already planning a trip to the United States, while I would also love to visit Thailand again as well, especially after checking out this post ^^ So, now you have put me in a real tight spot, hah - maybe I will just chunk my savings a little bit more and before going to the USA I will visit Phuket for a litle bit, huh? Not sure, but hopefully I'll be able to :P
The whole island has so much to offer !!. It is a super long flight so many sure you plan well ahead. All the places nowadays have review on the internet. you can browse and check it out. sarasin is just one little spot you should stop by before entering the mainland. I hope you have an awesome trip and share it to all of us here. cheers
