 Mosaic Of The Betrayal Of Jesus In Gethsemane Garden

 In The Church Of All Nations In Jerusalem

Within this beautiful garden, at the foot of Mount Nebo, is the Church of All Nations, or as it is often referred to, the Basilica of Agony. Within the larger garden is a smaller garden of ancient olive trees called The Garden of Gethsemane. It was here that Jesus prayed alone and that Judas betrayed Him. 

Within the Basilica, on the Northern side, is this beautiful painting in mosaics. The picture shows how Jesus was praying in the garden alone, with John and James waiting nearby, and was betrayed by Judas with a kiss. On the right of the mosaic you can see the priests, soldiers, and bearers of a torch.  The kiss of betrayal is what the Romans used to know that they indeed, had Jesus. Two Scriptures are written under the mosaic in Latin, that is taken from Matthew 26:50 and Luke 24:7:

 Matthew 26:50 

"And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him." 

Luke 24: 7 

"The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again."

This magnificent Catholic Franciscan church was constructed in 1924 by donations from many churches around the world. Truly it is one of the most spectacular Catholic Churches in this area.

What an experience to climax a day of walking in the steps of Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, and spending hours within the Church of All Nations, with not only this mosaic painting, but many other famous mosaic works also.
