It was a Friday afternoon, the sun was so scorching and barely could the half litre mineral water i had carried be enough to quench the thirst that it brought about.
I had just stepped out of the bank where i had gone to access my account number and be sure if i could start depositing my money after applying about two months ago.
The way they had treated us inside there was not good enough for me to say they had the best services and i was not sure anymore whether i could trust them with my finances. As they say, first impression matters, i was totally disenchanted by their customer handling.
We stood in the same line for over one hour, no one moving an inch while friends of bankers were just passing to be worked on. I finally made my mind up, to just get up and go.
No sooner had i stepped out than i bemoaned why i had to travel up to there and leave not worked on. So i had to board a taxi to some where then take a motorcycle up to where i stay.
Amidst the sizzling sun,i made up my mind to just walk some distance before i could take the taxi but before i did, a soft voice was quietly whispering to my ears to just cross the road and take the vehicle but i resisted.
If someone came to you pleading for your help, would you shun your ears and just walk away? If no, that's what i did too. I pinned my ears back to catch his side of the story, of how he had lost over one million Ugandan shillings that he had kept in his pocket to go deliver it some where.
I first conjured as if I hadn't heard until i met his fellow ahead bragging of how he had picked some money in an envelop. The fellow hurried to catch my pace, narrating to me how he had picked the envelop and had already started making plans for it.
As he was still talking as if i cared the one i had met before parked his motorcycle straight in front of me, asking confidently whether i had picked the envelop. As soon as i had started nodding my head in objection, the fellow interrupted adding me to the story, that i and him had picked it and are demanding for a share.
Still thinking of what to say, standing in the midst of the two got me helpless as they found their way into my bag picking everything that was there including my phone and money the other insisting that i picked his money from the envelop already because i was carrying a bag.
No one could notice, at just 1pm in the searing sun,the road was almost empty ,every one trying to find shade from the angry sun. I couldn't help myself as they stole my stuff, jumped on the motorcycle and drove off happy.
I stared at them disappearing at the end of the road, as far as i could see. My heart crying and at the same time screaming quietly. I was dumbfounded. I couldn't believe this. I had lost all i had carried even my start up money for the semester.
I swore that moment not to talk to anyone i didn't know, not to help anyone anymore even if who. I was determined to harden my heart forever.
I was almost starting to blame God for not warning me then i remembered the voice that spoke to me earlier, the one i had ignored that was come to save me. But there was nothing else left to do but to just walk the remaining distance as i figured out what was next and where to start from.
I was thinking, no phone, no contacts, no one internet, no chatting,no nothing. But at least i had hearkened to the voice that had told me to leave my laptop behind otherwise i would die if i had lost it.
I learnt my lessons though and one of it is to be sobber all the time. That voice was the holy spirit, our ever present help who guides us in all things. Many times we ignore him thinking we know what to do and when to do it then we end up tied up in losses and situations terrible enough for us to regret.
If we listen to God at all times then we are sure we are safe even with the decisions we make in life. He is there to guide us including the simple things requiring us to just yes or no. Remember every decision has consequences and some consequences are irreversible.
There is no prayer to heal pain in the heart but you just have to go through the pain so that you can heal. As some say, time is the best healer.
