Reaching Dolphin and investing into the platform

in #steemit6 years ago

Once upon a time there was a guy who was completely oblivious to the world of blogging and crypto-currency; In June 2017 the clueless guy was introduced to steemit, a blogging platform that rewards content creators with crypto-currency payouts. It was tough going and he struggled to gain any real traction or to get noticed in the vast world of steemit. He persisted though, and persisted and persisted...

...He wrote a lot, about many different things. He wrote with passion, putting himself out there personally, sharing his inner-most thoughts, his hobbies, fears, experiences and ideas. He commented on other users's work, voted with his very small SP, longed for his vote slider to be awarded him and watched as his steemit wallet grew , ever so slowly, little by little.

The clueless guy was lucky to have some assistance though, a Yoda of sorts, although just a little taller than the original green Yoda. In addition to his steemit-Yoda the guy was also lucky enough to capture the attention of a few users who engaged with him expanding his paradigm into areas previously unknown.

It's been a rollercoaster journey for the clueless guy however each up and down, twist and turn brought greater value, not just from a crypto-value perspective but from an emotional perspective also; He found writing to be extremely enjoyable which is why he continued to do so.

In case you haven't worked it out yet, that clueless guy was (is) me, and yes, I'm still largely clueless some 529 days or so after I first started my steemit journey.

Do you see the image to the left? That's me. Well, it's the new me. No, not the one in the bikini. The other one with the fins. The dolphin. I'm the dolphin gratefully receiving my "welcome to being a dolphin" kiss from that lovely girl in the bikini. 😋

That's right, I am now officially a dolphin on the platform.

I'm not really sure what that means at this point although what I do know is that it represents over 500 days of posting an average of 1.3 times and making around 9.5 comments per day. It represents a lot of writing, daily writing, and a great deal of effort. It also represents a little additional effort off-platform trading my meagre crypto-currency holdings (gained through steemit) to increase it little by little. It was hard work. I didn't buy STEEM or exchange bitcoin for it. In fact I didn't invest anything into steemit at all except a lot of time and effort.

Having said the above though, I have not reached this milestone all on my own. To say so would be narcissistic, egotistical and just plain wrong. I have people to thank.

You may recall I mentioned my Yoda. Well, as it turns out he isn't Yoda at all, he's my brother @tarazkp. Many of you may know him by reputation on the platform and a few from steemfest recently in Krakow. Some of you may even recall, from one of my previous blogs, that he and I are born on the same day, only 9 years apart. I am older.

We've always been pretty close and remained so when he went to live in Finland many years ago. I won't go into the story of our joint 21st and 30th birthday parties in Cairns some time ago; That event will live in infamy, however I will say that he has been of invaluable assistance throughout my steemit journey culminating in me recently achieving dolphin status. He's also been a pretty good brother.

I told him I was thinking of investing it into steemit and he agreed that it may be a good time to do so. We did some calculations and determined that I was just a little bit short of becoming a dolphin if I invested what I had and to my great surprise he told me he would spot me a little bit of STEEM he had saved to help me out.As I said, I blogged a lot and traded crypto over the last 18 months or so and was able to create a small stash of STEEM off-platform. You know, a little something that I'd squirrelled away for a rainy day. We were speaking the other day, @tarazkp and I, and he asked how much I had and what I was going to do with it.

So, in short, my little brother helped me become a dolphin, through support on the platform and some crypto-support and I am grateful. I understand how difficult things have been for him and his family for a few reasons including financial ones and therefore am very aware of the magnitude of the loan...Did I say loan"deserve" it. That meant a lot. As you know I've had a lot going on lately here and have wavered at times in respect of steemit.? Yeah, I thought it was a loan but no...It was a gift! So, thanks Yoda...I mean @tarazkp, I appreciate it greatly, especially your words telling me that I

I mentioned earlier that there's a few other people I'd like to mention. These will be in no particular order of course and I am equally grateful to all of them for different reasons. It's a testament to their quality that they have moved forward from helping little old me through friendship, advice and simple engagement, to doing so with others. So, thank you all.

Thank you to @sirknight for including me in some of the concepts you championed on the platform and for your constant engagement. You were one of the very first to welcome me to the platform and have remained consistent with your engagement with me throughout.

To the indomitable characters @mattclarke and @o07 a heartfelt thank you for bringing my steemit experience into the real world through the monthly meet-us in Adelaide. Your work with the #mallballers crew is greatly appreciated and I look forward to continuing those meet-ups. #AdelaideSteemFest2019 boys! Seriously though, thank you for your engagement on and off the platform.

To @anomadsoul, @acidyo, @jasonstaggers, @alexis555, @pharesim, @ripperone, @wackou, @sniffnscurry, @ocd, @m31, @redes, @ausbitbank and so many more who have been kind enough to throw me a vote here and there. It's amazing how a vote from a large account can positively affect a small user like myself. It's so difficult to be noticed on steemit so to be noticed by the likes of you is a welcome shot in the arm.

I'd also like to thank all the users who have engaged with me through my blog. (You know who you are) The comments, questions and remarks you leave for me are all welcome and I do my best not to miss any of them. If I have I am sorry. It's your comments and engagement that helps make this platform enjoyable.

I'm not completely sure what being a dolphin is all about however I believe the status comes with a little more responsibility on the platform.

It's not that I have not taken (or shown) responsibility in the past of course, I guess I mean that other users may perceive my account a little differently. Or then again, maybe not. Maybe the dolphin status is a hollow accolade and doesn't have any tangible meaning, but to be honest I don't think that's the case.

It shows a certain commitment on my part, I think so anyway, especially since I didn't buy my way into it with my own money, just the effort I put into the little bit of crypto-trading I did and a whole lot of writing on the platform and I believe that the right thing to do was to invest back into the platform as I have done.

I don't know where this will lead, steemit I mean, and crypto as well, however what I do know is that creating content is enjoyable. Sure, sometimes I don't know what to write, I struggle to create anything at all however I think we all suffer that affliction and feel frustrated because of it. I tend to just write about what I'm interested in, passionate about or what's on my mind at any given point. I write more for me than for others and that's the reward I pursue and ultimately receive.

So, thank you to everyone who reads my blog and engages with me. I know it's a tough time for crypto and the platform at the moment however nothing worth doing is ever easy and I believe that we have a future. I urge people to keep posting with quality and validity and to engage as much as possible. Who knows where this journey will take us, but whilst we're on it we might as well have some fun right?

Below are some blogs I've done. I wanted to share a few with you at this point, on achieving this milestone, as they remind me of my journey on the platform and of some of the many topics I've written on.

Congratulations and may the force be with you young dolphin! Good to see the dolphin ranks growing and another good one added to the pod.

Thanks mini, much appreciated. It's been a struggle but I got there thanks to some off-platform trading and a small act of generosity from my brother. I traded back and forth since July 2017 with some funds I initially took from my Steemit wallet and so felt good about putting it back in.

Hi galen. A fantastic achievement. I know how many hours that is and it's a lot. The longer you are on here you start to realise the commitment needed to move forward.

Thanks @cryptoandcoffee it's been a lot of work and commitment. I suppose I could have increased my stock faster by being in the chat rooms and drumming up support but I simply don't have the time to do so. I just write, and write and write and hope for the best.

I'm happy to have reached this milestone and to have the people around me that I do. I value them all.

Congratulations! Well deserved, indeed! It's nice to see so many people investing and powering up during these bleak times. I like to think it means we're a forward looking community... and not delusional, as Yoda @tarazkp was saying the other day.

Oh no...I hope I haven't created a thing with my Yoda comment. I mean what if everyonelight sabre's like a boss in a fight scene which is pretty cool so maybe it's not a bad parallel to draw? started calling @tarazkp Yoda. Although...In one of the Star wars movies Yoda

a8c0e6079d4d6cb0958ad77ea92f6e04b14621bbdea2dbbc0424abb358ec9882.jpg

Thank's for your message @ladyrebecca I really appreciate it.

No, I don't think anyone would actually call @tarazkp by any other name, his name is a brand on Steemit!

I'm dying at the first comment you got on this :))))))

I like dolphins too. And bikinis :)))

There, is that enough? No? Fine. First of all,

although just a little taller than the original green Yoda.

Don't be mean to your Yoda :P He's a cool Yoda, yeah?

No, not the one in the bikini.

Oh. You do realize we completely lost interest at this point? :P I mean, if you're not the hot chick in bikini, why am I even bothering?

Jokes aside, congrats again <3 I'm really glad you're here!

Haha, yes that first comment huh? I'm still considering whether to reply or not but my mum always said, if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all.

So yeah, hot chick in the bikini...It's actually me but I didn't want to say so as I thought no one would believe me. I probably shouldn't have said I was the dolphin either because everyone on Steemit knows I float like a rock, not a dolphin. Well, those that read my blogs do...

Thanks for commenting HD. I'm fortunate to have met people like you on here.

It's actually me but I didn't want to say so as I thought no one would believe me.

Yeah yeah yeah, clickbait-y image and all :)))
Owww, I'm glad to have met you too, dude <3

Haha, you got me! I had the perfect dolphin image picked out and then something red with an attractive, curvaceous sort of shape caught my attention and there wasn't any going back... :)

Hah I know you too well :P But who can blame you? Who can resist a fine-looking bikini? ;)

True, you sure do. :)

Congratulations Galen and thankyou for the mention. You know what though, you have always been a dolphin in my eyes.

Just keep doing what you are doing friend, because Steem needs your solid and original workmanship. And Steem needs you... now more than ever.

SirKnight.

Thanks SK much appreciated. I hope to keep providing interesting content and to see the platform develop and grow. I really appreciate your consistent support and encouragement.

That's very impressive achievement to become a dolphin on the site. It puts you in an elite group that many of us aspire to get to. It's also the only realistic one for people starting from scratch,

I didn't buy STEEM or exchange bitcoin for it. In fact I didn't invest anything into steemit at all except a lot of time and effort.

This only makes it more impressive since any other dolphin that i know has put in money at some stage to top up their account. It's all about consistency and engagement. For my first 6 months i was very in and out but since i did grow and got more involved i can see the difference. Even though it has gotten quieter the people left are the best ones to talk to as the are here for the long haul.

Congrats and good luck going forward.

When I was first introduced to steemit I wasn't writing that much. I had in the past but let life get in the way. I had a day job that took up a lot of time and to be completely honest held off from joining for six months!

Once I started writing the flood gates opened and I have written a lot for the platform and for personal as well. It's been a great process for me and I've enjoyed it. I still do.

The money (crypto) is secondary for me really, although it helps of course. To date I have taken none in cold hard cash and so I see it as play money. For me it's about the writing and the rest will take care of itself.

I agree with you in that the people left here are the ones that should be and are the ones to engage with. I hope one day to see the platform really take off and hope to be around to assist people to fly with it.

It's only now that I've really been stepping up my game in the past few months. Posting more, engaging more and getting involved in the discord but the more I do here the more that I like what we have. There is so much to be part of that you just get drawn deeper and deeper into the sites.

Posted using Partiko Android

I don't have time to Discord much. I certainly respond to messages though and I get a few there every now and then.

I have a day job and reckon I'd lose it if I spent all day steeming...😜

I'm the same. I work about 45 hours per week before my other commitments but have tried to fit the other bits around my schedule. I work a variety of shifts so it's all about timing but it's nice to be more involved and chat to some of the people who can teach me new things. If nothing else i've learned a lot from my time on here and that's invaluable.

My brother is in the chat rooms a lot but I can't seem to find the time of volition despite knowing there's great benefit in doing so.

Between work, (I'm in management at a large real estate company) my hobbies, wife/social commitments and looking after my mother in law through her cancer thing...Well, I just don't have the ability.

Besides, I have to say that I prefer one-on-one contact better. I'm a bit peoplephobic in a way I guess and those chat rooms with 30 people all talking about different things in a linear fashion doesn't help that.

Phew that is a lot of work to keep you busy everyday and I'm not surprised that you don't have the time. For me all of this is an interest and a hobby but there are far more important things in life. Health and family being two of them and obviously a priority for you which is only right.

I never liked the chat rooms previously and only really started in them lately. Just because I was invited into @helpie and found such a good group of people there that dragged me along. I had pretty much the same feelings as you before that but I've changed my position in the last couple of months. I still prefer one on one but have to say how much fun I find those crazy people in the chats too.

congrats on your dolphinhood! :) love to see more and more join the pod daily... and i'm nearly there to be clicking and doing ring jumps with the rest of you!

Hi @mountainjewel and thank you. It's been a struggle.

As a plankton I almost got eaten by a whale but escaped narrowly by hiding under an outcrop of coral with a couple of my buddies. As a minnow I swam around with the rest and was pretty safe...Oh, there was that one time the school got chased by a group of seals...I didn't hide that time, but one doesn't need to be the fastest swimmer to survive; Just not the slowest. I still lament the loss of little Johnny...He was a good minnow...

So now I'm in the pod and I don't need to worry about those bloody seals any longer.

Thanks for your message. I am here more for the enjoyment of writing and engaging with like-minded people so I appreciate your message and kind words. I see on your wallet that you're close to joining the pod so I look forward to reading your I'm in the pod post.

Really nice name too. @mountainjewel makes me think of a place below the snow-line, deep within the pines...Earthy smells, damp needles beneath my hiking boots and that silence one can only hear in secluded places like that...

Thanks SO MUCH for this post! You're obviously succeeding swimmingly ;-)@galenkp

I'm a new Steemer, slowly gaining traction and understanding to this platform. I, too, have a yoda-like guide who has proven immensely helpful.

You have given me a nice boost to keep moving forward. Right now, I'm building a list of seasoned content creators to follow, such as your brother, who I landed upon this morning (on referral from my yoda!)

In the next days I will write my introduce yourself post!

I feel good about the Steemit platform. I also believe that my "Journey to Here" will provide value to my future readers & followers. Only time will tell, and I look forward to writing about my arrival to Dolphin-hood.

Peace and smiles

Hi @jimmyblog it sounds like you are approaching it correctly Nd have a good plan. I always tell me to engage and to write passionately so will say the same to you.

Your introduction post is important as it's the first look anyone gets of you. Mine is linked in this post if you're interested.

I look forward to reading yours. All the best with your journey. I look forward to reading your I'm an dolphin blog when you write it!

Thanks @galenkp for sharing your Steemit journey. I am a red fish, so it's still along way to be a dolphin. Your post really show me the way, to enjoy writing, and enjoy creating content, and treat it as the ultimate reward. Thanks also to @tarazkp

You're welcome @putu300. Finding reward in writing and the engagement has been a happy accident for me and it's taken over from the original desire to make some money here on Steemit for me. After all, I have a day job.

Keep plugging away and be consistent. Write passionately and engage. That's my best advice I suppose. I'll take a look at your blog as well and see what I find. Thanks for your comment.

Thank you.

Thanks a lot @toofasteddie I appreciate it. It's been a lot of work and I've been fortunate to have had some good people around me to motivate me, keep me focused and to support me throughout. It's been tough, but rewarding.

Nice photo. I like dolphins ;)

Thank you for your comment. Your opinion is important to me. I like dolphins too. I'm actually a dolphin trainer and am currently training a dolphin to read. I'm hoping he may read my blog.

Congrats mate and thanks for the mention too. You deserve it all and more.

Thanks man, much appreciated. Good talk last night too. Again you point me in the right direction. Looking forward to speaking with Matt on Thursday.

I am sure he can help a bit and perhaps even time it well :)

Well, congratulations, @galenkp. Becoming a dolphin is all the rage it seems. :) I think it's awesome. The more the merrier.

Sigh.

What are you going to do now? :)

STEEM looked like it was plunging again just now but it may have tapered off. For a second, I thought I might be headed to orca-hood. :) Since that means 1¢ STEEM, maybe it's for the best that it's not (plunging that far).

Sigh.

Onward and upward.

I'm going to keep writing and enjoying it I guess and consolidate on the hard work I've put in over the last 18 months. To be honest I don't watch the markets all that much currently. I did when I was trading but not so much now. I'm having a chat with @mattclarke in person on Thursday and will discuss a path forward with him as he is more savvy in these things than I am myself. I also spoke with my brother and hopefully I'll decide upon a direction.

As far as the platform goes though I'll just write and write, for the enjoyment. Oh, and engage as well, with other users, hopefully more than I have been.

Well, congratulations, @galenkp. Becoming a dolphin is all the rage it seems. :) I think it's awesome. The more the merrier.

Thanks for this mate, much appreciated!

I'd say @mattclarke is an excellent individual to be talking to. Very savvy from my experience. Maybe he'll trade you some of his STEEM Monster packs for Cookie Monsters! Just a thought. :)

Good to hear you will still be writing and interacting. With a full-time job and a wife, the interaction time here can be hard to come by to begin with, so I wish you well with all of that.

Maybe he'll trade you some of his STEEM Monster packs for Cookie Monsters! Just a thought.

I'll do my best to convince him...

Welcome to dolphin world :)

Thanks mate, much appreciated.

Welcome to the club! Your journey is inspiring given the fact that your Steem Power was earned whereas I invested mostly into it. However, we are all part of this great community and have high expectations of the future potential it brings. I hope to help family and friends also achieve these milestones as well! Thanks for sharing!

real money into it simply because I don't have any to spare I guess...And I don't know how.Hi @newageinv and thanks for your message. Yeas, I have't invested

Hopefully the platform rides out the challenges it faces and pushes onwards and upwards...Along with the crypto-markets as well. For me it's about enjoyment, probably because I only have time and effort invested, not actual funds.

I appreciate your comment and wish you all the best.

Yes! I've reached the same 'level' last week and I'm still glowing... It's amazing to reach milestones through working hard and even investing some 'real world money' for a better future for yourself and others. You're right to celebrate this, and on to the next 500 days on here :-) It's going to get even better, I'm sure of it!

Congratulations on attaining dolphin level. I haven't actually invested and "real-world" money in the platform yet, just hard work and effort although I may do so at some point in the future.

All the best.

Congratulations @galenkp! You have completed the following achievement on the Steem blockchain and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :

Congrats brother! That’s fantastic. Welcome to the ranks man.

Thanks @blewitt I must admit it feels good to see my hard work and effort culminate in something. I hope my story provides others with some belief that it is possible.

I appreciate you taking time to reply mate. Thanks! :)

Any friend of @tarazkp is a friend of mine!! He’s the best.

It’s exciting hitting a mental milestone here. I wish you continued success here man. Keep kickin ass.

Absolutely. I think others will see what you accomplished and be inspired to take a similar path. At least those who can do so and take this all seriously.

Congrats man. You rock!!

Thanks man, much appreciated. :)

Some hard-core looking dophins right there man! :)

Congratulations ... you are not sure what it means to be a dolphin ??? I think that all the little ones want to be a dolphin hahaha ... I want to be a dolphin hahaha ... But that is with a lot of perseverance, time, dedication and patience ... so I already started my way in that direction .. 😉 Now your goal should be .... A Whale ... You will also achieve it ... your publications are very good ... so I hope to read a publication like this in a few months, receiving the whale nomination! successes!

Now your goal should be .... A Whale ...

I think I'll stay a dolphin for a while. They are intelligent, can swim fast, are much-loved by most people and are good at floating. I am neither of those things in real life so I'm content to be a cyber-dolphin for a while. :)
