For example did you know that the name comes from the simple fact that the inventor liked how the word "zipper" sounds?
Zippo Manufacturing Company is situated in the american city Bradford, district Pennsylvania and it was founded by George G. Blaisdel.
The first lighter was created in a garage, after a similar austrian model. The model was patented in March 1936.
How can you spot a fake Zippo lighter?
An original Zippo has a series of distincitve elements, which differentiates it very clearly, for connoisseurs, from a fake one.
Obviously, the easy to spot distinctive sigh would be finding the model in Zippo's catalogs. Unfortunately, so many people know every existing model, so it would be hardly to state "This one is fake!".
Other ways to spot a fake:
The inscription in the bottom of the lighter. The most effective of all the methods to verify. There are a few distinctive elements which not many people know.
The space between "Brad" and "Ford". To some false lighters, there is a bigger space between the letters in the word "Bradford", between the letters "d" and "f". The original one has the words bonded together.
The letter "Z" in "Zippo". Some duplicates have the first letter bigger than the others. The original one has equal letters such that the tallest letter is "i" due to the flame logo which replaces the point on "i".
The inscription "Made in U.S.A". Sometimes this one is smaller than the text which precedes it – "Bradford P.A.". In reality, it has to have the same format. Also, it is possible that the points between the letters "U", "S", and "A" to be missing. The right text is "U.S.A.".
The letter which indicates month of manufacture. According to the coding mode of manufacture, Zippo uses letters to identify the month. This means that the last letter is “L” which indicates december. All the letters on a lighter which are “bigger” than “L” proves that it is a fake. Generally it is preffered the letter “Z”.
Warranty
Zippo is known for lifetime warranty. This means that if the lighter ever gets broken, no matter how old it is or how many owners it had, Zippo Manufacturing Company repairs it for free or it replaces it with a new one. The only aspect that is not included in the warranty is the exterior of the lighter.
I know that you can refill them with cheaper alternatives :p
