Indonesian recipe for vegan and vegetarian "Oseng tempe pedas manis"

Hello dear Steemians, today it's time for another Indonesian recipe for vegetarian/vegan from me.

The dish is called "Oseng tempe pedas manis".



article of mine last week.

The original recipe of this dish is quite spicy for most Eurepeans because it uses normally few red chilis and some green chilis too, but this time I only use green peperoni for the sake of my husband. ^_^
If you can't even stand peperoni, then just go without it at all.

These are the ingredients you need for the dish:

  • 1 block Tempe (ca. 400 g),
    cut it in square shape like this:


  • 2 green peperoni
  • 1 tsp tamarind, soak/dissolve in 50 ml water
  • 2 cm fresh galangal (1/2 tsp ground galangal)
  • 3-4 piece lime leaves
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 onion (2 piece shallots, medium size)
  • 5 cherry tomatoes
  • 100 ml sweet soy sauce
  • salt
  • cooking oil
Instruction:
  • Cut the peperoni crosswise and slice the tomatoes, garlic and onion thinly.



- Pour a bit of cooking oil on the pan and fry the garlic, onion, galangal and peperoni for a minute then add the tomatoes and lime leaves.


- Lastly put the tempe in the pan, fry it together for a minute then pour the sweet soy sauce and tamarind water in.

- Add some salt and keep stirring so that the spices could be absorbed well by the tempe and it doesn't burn. Tempe doesn't need to be cooked too long as it's actually already well cooked in the production process. The soy beans were cooked before the fermentation. A few minutes cooking is enough and the dish is ready to serve.

Tempe ist ja in Deutschland echt schwer zu finden oder? Oder habe ich es früher nur nie gesehen, weil ich es erste seit der Reise her kenne?- Ich weiß es gerade nicht.... Sehr lecker und würde gleich ein paar Löffel davon essen liebe @kobold-djawa

Inzwischen ist es nicht mehr so schwierig zu finden. vor 6 Jahren habe ich noch selbst Tempe hergestellt, aber seit paar Jahren nicht mehr. Man kann es wenigstens die Bio-Tempe in Bioladen finden, falls die nächste asiatischen Laden es nicht verkaufen. Es ist etwas teurer vielleicht als kein Bio-Tempe, aber es ist wohl billiger als es aus online Laden in Hamburg oder Berlin zu bestellen, da man für frische Lebensmittel einen Zuschlag für die Lieferkosten bezahlen muss, damit es auch frisch ankommt. Es gibt noch dazu das Risiko, dass die Logistik-Unternehmen nicht fähig sind, dein Haus zu finden und die Waren muss wieder zurückgeschickt werden. Solche Skandale sind für die Sendung frischer Lebensmittel eine Katastrophe. :-D
Tempe ist eine gute Proteinquelle, gut um das Fleisch zu ersetzen. Heutzutage gibt es ja viel Veganer und Vegetarier in DE, deshalb ist Tempe nicht mehr so selten im Markt.

Tempeh ist mir bisher nur vom Namen her bekannt, ebenso wie Galgant. Als fleischlose Alternative werde ich dein Rezept gerne einmal ausprobieren. Danke dafür!

Bei mir werden es wohl auch Pfefferoni anstatt Chili werden, da es mir bei zu viel Schärfe gleich einmal die Sprache verschlägt ;-)

There is another version of this dish, it's completely dry that's why it would last longer too than this one.
The tempe will be fried first until crispy and then we mix it with spices.
For this version we would normally not use that much of sweet soy sauce but caramel sauce made of palm sugar instead.

I think I know this crunchy version as well.

It's cheap and simple food in Indonesia but a luxury in Eurepe hahaha.

Tempe with a sweet taste and a little spicy is suitable for side dishes to eat for children.
This is one of my favorite dishes and is a good source of protein

Hach, ich freu mich immer wieder welch tolle veganen Rezepte die Steemit-Community einen zukommen lässt. Man wird, ohne das man nach etwas sucht, inspiriert. Vielen Dank schon mal für dein spezielles Gericht. Tatsächlich habe ich, obwohl ich recht international koche, der indonesischen Küche noch nie einen Besuch abgestattet. Das wird sich wegen dir wohl nun ändern.

Tempeh ist ja allgemein schon total geil. Ich zumindest liebe es. Das gemeinsame Anbraten mit den von dir genannten Zutaten muss das Ganze ja unglaublich lecker machen. Muss ich unbedingt probieren.

Das freut mich. Ich wünsche dir viel Erfolg. In Deutschland sind die Zutaten nicht mehr so schwierig zu finden. Nächstes Mal würde ich vielleicht auch schreiben, wie man Tempe selbst aus Bohnen herstellen kann. Man kann auch andere Sorten von Bohnen benutzen. Jede Bohnensorten werden ihren eigenen Geschmack verleihen. Wenn süße Soyasoße nicht verfügbar ist, kann man auch einfach die dunkle Soyasoße verwenden und Palmzucker dazu addieren.

Yes, tempe is not so popular like tofu but slowly it penetrates the market in Eurepe as well.

It is probably already in our international stores.Now i have seen it, when i go to my local store will see if it is available.You would be surprised the ingredients here in the U.K from overseas. As it is so diverse there is such a popular demand too.👍

ok......attractive in looking but I am more interested in what i am eating.....How healthy and nutritious it is........In the recipe you have tomatoes which is a good source of vitamin A,phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. while your soy sauce is is very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Magnesium and Copper, and a very good source of Protein, Niacin, Iron, Phosphorus and Manganese. The lime leave promotes oral health.........Now you know why this food is healthy and nutritious.............

I prefer to eat vegan indeed foods for every meals. I eat some meats and fish dishes. But not always. Better instructions and ingredients details given for easy making cook. Thanks your support @kobold-djawa.

I am wondering why european dislike spicy food..apakah karena makanan disana biasanya disajikan hambar dan tidak 'nendang'?

Apa anehnya, itukan cuma soal selera. Gimana kalau pertanyaannya dibalik: Kenapa orang indonesia suka sekali makan pedas sampai ngabisin banyak cabe untuk 1 porsi makan doang Hehehe?
Padahal siapa bilang cabe makin banyak bikin makanan berasa makin enak? Yang bener adalah, cabe mengandung unsur kimia yang bikin orang jadi tambah nafsu makan, hingga ngga peduli biarpun lidah terbakar dan perut jadi sakit, ambeien berdarah pun tetep lahap aja makannya.
Cabe tentu aja mengandung nutrisi juga, tapi terlalu banyak sekali makan jelas bukan pilihan sehat, selain itu... justru mengganggu kemampuan lidah kita untuk bisa mengenali dan menghargai rasa asli dari bahan makanan utama yang dipake dalam hidangan. Tanpa adanya bumbu yang buanyak, makanannya mungkin ngga akan berasa apa2 lagi kalau kebanyakan cabe. Karena kita jd ngga bisa lagi mengenali kalau udang itu sebenarnya manis, bawang merah juga manis, ikan jenis tertentu itu manis yang lainnya lagi gurih, labu itu jg manis...semua ketutup sama pedasnya cabe yang jumlahnya buanyak.
Kayak rawon setan itu misalnya, tanpa banyaknya rempah yang dipake, rasa asli dagingnya kehilangan enaknya hehehe.
Tapi yg namanya orang biasa makan pedas, memangnya penting utk menganalisa kenapa?
Di Indonesia yg ngga suka pedas juga ada, di Jerman yg suka pedas jg ada, mertua saya bs makan pedas contohnya. Di Indonesia juga ngga semua orang suka opor, ngga semua orang juga suka tempe.
Ada yg lbh suka tahu misalnya.
