I have asked myself some time ago why people do what they do. Why does somebody choose to be a therapist instead of anything else? I chose to study psychology myself some time ago, but only three semesters. I did so in hopes to understand myself better and other people. I have come into contact with therapists and found some of them to be very arrogant. I have come in contact with professors and other academics and also found the same trait there. I'm not saying everybody who is an academic is arrogant, but there are certainly people who study for the social status rather than "for the greater good" honestly.
The professor who looks down on you, because of his social status, the arrogant therapist who looks down on you because of his knowledge, the arrogant philosophy student who thinks he's superior than you, because of the fact he or she can recite Sokrates "I know that I don't know".
I've come to the conclusion that humans like to compare themselves to others. And they pursue different career goals, if they have the luxury to do so, in order to win that comparison. Thus you will, from my perspective, find many therapists who are therapists exactly because of this: they feel empowered by helping others through superior knowledge of the mind. Consequentially one has to be very careful in how you let your therapist treat you, because in everything we do, there is a certain amount of self-centered interest. Even in altruism!
