Photography 05: Taking a Perfect Car Photo

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

For those who own a car and is absolutely in love with it, the obsession with taking car photos is completely normal.  However, it is not that easy. Taking photos of car is a special kind of photography. It is a bit similar to taking photos of humans.

I would like to share some of the PRO tips on taking car pictures and for model i am going to use my own blacky.

Taking a Perfect Car Photo

Like i stated before taking a good car photo is not as easy as it might seem. There are some things to remember. If you do, the photos will look much better and more professional. Also your car is going to look much better. Mines good anyway, hehe.

Location

Location is the first big factor in taking a good photo, in any style of photography in fact. When taking photos of cars you should choose a place with a nice background without anything else so the car would be in focus. Try to find a place that's either closer to nature like i have here or a very urbany under the bridge, in factory, empty street.

Having a road or a level ground will look better unless you have an off roader. Also remember, these kind oh photos look best if you have the only car in the shot. Also no people, unless it is a busy city shot or there is you as an owner.

Season is not as important , you can make good looking photos pretty much all year long.

Detailing

Attention to details is probably one single most overlooked thing. Have a clean car. It will make the color pop more and be more reflective. No need to go crazy, but having a nice wash just before helps.

Don't have the low/high beams on. For most car it would be best to have lights completely off during day time. Some cars have cool running lights. BMW's have so called angel eyes which i think look amazing. Especially in a evening when it's not too dark yet.

If you can, take of your licence plate or edit it out in Photoshop after. Trust me on this.

Direction

Now how to frame a shot. It is similar to shooting people. Try to keep the car on one of the frame corners. It is extremely important to for car to face direction of a photo. For example in photo above, the car is in bottom left corner and is facing to right side, or empty part of the frame. This unwritten rule i just wrote will make the photo look more natural.

Have Fun With It

Reason for taking a car photos is mainly because you really like your car and you want something really nice. Experiment. Same as people, car has their good and bad sides. Me personally like my car best from the front corners or straight up.  I like rest of the parts as well, but front is my favorite.

I hope you liked this little tread about how to enjoy and take better photos of your car!

Did i miss anything?

Do you enjoy taking photos of your car?

Sort:

What's that thingy behind your car that goes all the way up and has holes in it?

This was at the area where speed boats and jet skis are lowered into the water. Like a little docking area.

They have a sort of light pole 5 - 6 meters high to show the way back if weather is bad. At night it lights up with red light at the top and white in the middle. :)

Ohh, that's an interesting system!
