Writer promises that the identities of Rey's parents will be revealed in The Last Jedi. I expect them to be... (Part 1)

in #movies7 years ago (edited)

In this week's Entertainment Weekly, Rian Johnson, the writer and director of The Last Jedi, assured us that in the film, Rey will discover the identity of her parents. He also said that this information will not have a major effect on Rey. Hmmmm not sure what that means but I don't care. My family and I have been curious about the answer to this mystery since December 17, 2015.

Dang were her eyes always green? Do I need to go and search for other green eyed characters now?

As soon as the movie ended, I developed my theory of Rey's lineage. Last night, my kids and I watched The Force Awakens and paid special attention to any clues that would reveal her identity.

I wish I could say that I was not biased and I went into the movie with an open mind. Sadly, I did not. I have been defending my opinion for far too long. So I fell into the trap of looking for evidence to prove myself right.

But the beauty of the mystery is that J.J. Abrams is a master of deception. He throws in so many red herrings that it would be impossible for me to argue against anyone else's point of view. A fan could make a reasonable argument in favor of nearly any character being Rey's parents. In fact, my own wife does not agree with me.

Before I reveal my opinion, I want to give you a frame of reference. I feel very strongly that The Force Awakens is a reboot of Star Wars rather than a true sequel. There were far too many similarities between this film and the original 1977 Star Wars. Many of my friends were disappointed by the similarities. I merely looked at them as a way to build a bridge between 45 year old Star Wars fans and the younger generation of 7 to 13 year olds who were being welcomed into the amazing Star Wars universe.

I also feel very strongly that Rey definitely has Skywalker blood. As soon as that blue lightsaber flew past a ducking Kylo Ren and landed in her hand, I knew she was Darth Vader's grand daughter. I simply cannot think of another reason that Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber would have "chosen" to land in her possession rather than Vader's ultimate fanboy.

If Anakin Skywalker is Rey's grandfather, then there are only two choices. Rey is either Luke or Leia's child.

My wife argues that Luke is Rey's father. Although I think she is mistaken, she has plenty of evidence to back her up. So I can't definitively say she is wrong. What I can do, is tell her (and you) why I believe Leia is Rey's mother.

I am only going to use evidence available in The Force Awakens. I have obsessed over this and have done more research... but that is cheating. I will also add some pure speculation that explains some of the holes that will need to be filled in.

The movie begins with the crawl explaining that the Leia lead Resistance is searching for Luke. Of course she wants to find her brother. Of course the Resistance could use a Jedi or two... but I think the desire to find him is ramped up by the fact that Leia wants to know what happened to her daughter.

She knows what happened to her son. Luke was training Ben. Ben went crazy and attacked the other padawans. If Rey were Ben's sister, it would make sense that Luke was also training her. Was she killed by her brother? Did Luke save her and take her with him? Did Luke hide her? Leia and Han do not know. After approximately fifteen years, I would imagine they believe their daughter is dead. But they would need closure... and perhaps the Force is telling Leia that her daughter is still alive.

If this is indeed a reboot, it would make sense to parallel the element of hiding a child on a desert planet to protect it from evil. It would make sense that Luke would drop the child off, change her name to Rey and not tell her parents. If he simply returned "Rey" to her parents, could Kylo Ren find her? Could she too be turned to the Dark Side of the Force. Should Luke kill her to prevent the two siblings from uniting to throw off the balance of the Force or should he hide her... and make her forget her past? Luke is a powerful Jedi. I would argue he would have the ability to make Rey forget her past and the trauma she witnessed. Just like Luke in A New Hope, this child would be safest if she were ignorant of her family's true identity. This would also parallel the very important twin brother and sister from the original trilogy.

These three all have deserts in common... but Rey doesn't whine like the other two. Leia is the only Skywalker who doesn't whine.

That is quite a leap I just took. How did I get there?

Abrahams primed us for a mystery when Rey first meets BB-8. She asks where he was from. He beeps and Rey responds, "Classified? Really? Me too. Big secret." I noticed this the second time I watch the movie and laughed out loud. Very clever Mr. Abrams.

After she and Finn team up, the defector mentions Luke Skywalker. Rey responds that she thought he was a myth. Regardless if Luke is her father or uncle, Rey should surely remember him... unless her memory has been wiped. I believe it has.

My daughter provided me with more evidence. She pointed out how "sassy" Rey is... just like her mother Leia. If this is a reboot, wouldn't the new Leia be a strong and "sassy" woman who would repeatedly get offended by a man taking her hand to lead her through a battle? Would she be flabbergasted that this man would question if she were ok directly after the man had been knocked flat on his back? Would she take the lead in an escape... just like Leia did when they were escaping the detention block? I believe she would.

I also believe it is time to take a break. That was a heck of a lot of "Star Warsing" right there. We better let that sink in until part II.

I hope she's Obi-Wan's granddaughter...

I have heard that theory. Would be cool but it wouldn't explain the lightsaber... but anything is possible. That is why it is so much fun!

I love Star Wars!!!

Sorry Han - Rey is actually a female clone of Luke Skywalker, created by Snoke's scientists using Luke's lost hand from Cloud City! This is why she has memories of the light saber. Snoke had her created to flush out the hidden Luke Skywalker, steal his knowledge then betray him - ensuring he would remain Supreme Leader forever!!

Not bad! I like that one.

Haha ok @hanshotfirst I honestly was thinking Luke but its probably a little obvious I dont know, but I have to say you have got me thinking now it could be Leia, good detective work we shall see.

Let your wife know that I would love to agree with her, but I have to go with you on this one, daughter of Leia. I don't know how to articulate it, but the last scene of the movie, it seems like JJ is trying to tell you they're not father / daughter by the distance they're standing apart. No question, Skywalker blood for sure though

Quiet.. you'll spoil part 2. LOL!

That last scene is 100% what convinced me. It's Chewie!!! Hug him!!!!

Rey is so beautiful :)
Thanks for posting!

that explain it...
Luke must have met Rey's beautiful mother somewhere in the galaxy while searching for that nomad planet...
and the rest is history...

Force Awakens was a real treat to watch for us older Star Wars fans. Given the fact that Han Solo was a playboy. I'm sure he has a quite a few kids floating around out there in the galaxy. Lol

LOL. between he and Lando I bet half the galaxy is related to one of them lol.

Very interesting theory and it's spun very well and very convincing. I'm a huge fan as well, so looking forward to finally find out this year.

Me too! I have a second part of this that will be out on Thursday.

I'm so curious to here the rest, Thursday is finally here. Wake up and share your theory with us all!!

Before Abram's movie there was a father-son conflict. So if they do that again it will be chessy but I think sister-brother conflict will be interesting. And it will be more useful for caracter development in the script. Any way, everybody follow own destiny. So, can you be my Yoda? I need that, Steemit need that. And you need a heir in here :)

Good point about copying the parent conflict.

I think most people think this. But the whole sage really is about the Skywalker family. The first trilogy is about Anakin, the second Luke, and now Rey.

But I could be wrong.

But I loved Force Awakens, so what if was reboot. Episode 1 tried to be a reboot, Tatooine, Skywalker wishing for something more, Inexperience Skywalker blowing up a spaceship in important battle, and we all know how Episode 1 landed.

But for Force Awakens, I remember very distinctly thinking here are actors, and I'm think about Finn and Poe, who are clearly, CLEARLY excited about being in Star Wars movie and it shines through onto the screen. Which we didn't get during the Prequel trilogy.

For sure. I am convinced George Lucas told the actors that emotions don't exist in this galaxy. Force Awakens was so much fun!

Very excited for episode 8. This franchise is unique in just how it has been able to captivate each generations imagination since the late seventies. Name me another franchise that has done this.

There are none. My kids are as excited as I am. that says something.

i never understand star wars.... pity me

It's ok there is still time!

thanks. i am going to sit with all the parts there is of this movie again...

I just want to thank you for pointing out that the movie is more of a reboot than a proper sequel.

No one I have talked to has agreed with me on that and I thought it was so obvious.

Hmm, hadn't thought of Force Awakens as a reboot. The Old Hope title that some folks use makes sense then, haha.

Yeah. But I was ok with it. The new generation needed a connection.

I can't wait for the last jedi!!!! Nice post @hanshotfirst

Spoiler alert - it's me. I am her father.

At the very least, you're most correct in that Rey's parents appear as though they could be just about anyone, thanks JJ's masterful deceptive abilities. Still, one of your points strikes me as more helpful than the others, IF it is in fact true.

If this is a reboot (as you pointed out, it does have that appearance), then Rey would appear to be a reboot of Leia. This is important because it would account for the similarities you exposed without supporting the idea of Leia being Rey's mother. That being said, it certainly doesn't support the opposing idea either. Unfortunately, it only clouds the issue of Rey's ancestry further.

Personally, I share your opinion in regards to Leia being Rey's mother. Considering the repeated falling outs between Han and Leia; Leia's precarious position as a rebel leader; and BB-8's homage to R2D2. I suppose it would also explain the interactions between Kylo and Rey in a more comprehensible light as well.

Loved the post man! My wife and I debate this topic frequently

Good point. Maybe she just is the new Leia... Part 2 will be out Thursday. I go 1600 words deeper lol.

Jj abrahams is indeed a very clever man, i absolutely loved fringe, its one of my fav tv shows. Your post has raised a lot of new ideas about reys origin, can't wait for the reveal.

Me too! I have a part 2 of this coming that fleshes out my theory a bit more. But it was around 2800 words so I had to brea it in two.

Awesome, i will be looking forward to the sequel.

nice post like ur before its batman and plants of the apps its a u give ur good opinions from these movies which are really good new and helpfull in our life if we understand and try to follow thanxt to work on it @hanshotfirst sir

Well at least they're not dragging it out the very end like they did Luke's appearance in TFA. But I don't think the "big reveal" is going to be all that shocking. I just want them to tell a good story! @trendhobo

For sure. If the story is good I don't care what the answer is.

OMGOsh...love this post!!! I'm not a 100% Star Wars fan like my husband...well only for 80% :p
But going to watch the Force Awakens again and with this info in the back of my head.
Can't wait for the next Star Wars Movie. Realllly realllly want to know who Rey is and will she join the Darkside....(tadaaa tadaaaa) :p
And and and Leia gave Rey a big long motherly hug....makes you wonder....

Oh that hug will play a key role in part two of this. I can't want for December!

We will know in a few months. I will definitely go to the theater with my son to see this one ;)

I am already counting the days!

I'm glad that it's not only me alone, I also feel it more like a reboot. In fact I was really disappointed with the movie. Ray - OK, but Han's son? Come on, when Darth Vader pulled off his helmet - everybody cried. When Solo's son did it - everyone laughed out loud. Was this unbalanced hysteric really necessary for the movie?... Well, a bit of off topic:)
But talking about Ray... I also wondered who her parents are. As I understand from your post it's a fact that she is Leia's daughter?

I think it was easier to enjoy the movie if you have kids with you. I realized it was for them so that allows die to give it a break and just enjoy.

In fact when I yet haven't seen "Force Awakes" I heard a lot of feedbacks about it as about a "movie for kids":)

fun, I like hearing how you watched this saga in a different way than me. I never really though that deeply about the connections. I'll watch it again and look this time! thanks!

I'm with you on that theory. I think you'll cover it in your next post, but I saw hints of it in Maz's castle!! Great post!

She might be related to Jabba? no, he doesnt have green eyes ;)

Those films are excellent ..!
I think she's Leia's daughter ... I support that theory.

I've been leaning towards her being related to Kenobi but would love it if she was just a random force user.

@hanshotfirst the description of "sassy" immediately took me to King Julien from Madagascar. No cross-movie theory there, because DreamWorks, but it was a funny diversion nonetheless. Great post, earned a follow!

These new stars are pretty mush a remake of the original, disneys way of making money out of fans of the franchise. And then theres rouge one, a random film thrown in the middle of the already muddled up order.

Who said that Rey has parents ? ;)

star wars is a great movie :) i loved it . i made this for you i hope you would love it !

love Star Wars..

Always the best ...

'Star Wars' is really fun, its exciting, its inspirational, and people respond to that. It's what they want.

As much as I want to agree with you, I would have to go the contrarian route this time and pitch my flag with the theory that Rey is Obi-Wan's granddaughter. He was stuck in Tatooine for a long time, who knows what number of progeny he had produced. With the theory I heard, I was convinced when they pointed out that Alec Guinness' voice was used in that trippy lightsaber sequence at Maz's bar.

It would be too obvious for Rey to have Skywalker blood, and I don't think Abrams would go that direction. UNLESS, he already set everyone up to think too deeply, so now he's going with the obvious path. Really though, why wasn't there a mention of a twin sister? It could be that as you said, the memory has been wiped, but I feel if there was a memory wipe, Luke would've wiped the memory of the twin for everyone. If he really wants to keep her safe, nobody would remember Kylo ever had a twin. Oh my Glob, I'm slowly convincing myself that Rey is Leia's daughter.
