A Little History of the Fortress of Oradea.

It was built in 1077 by King Ladislau 1, the first building being a fortified monastery.
Oradea Fortress is an architectural monument in Romania, one of the few citadels used today. It is said of the city that it could not be conquered because of the vast underground networks of connections with the exterior.
The fortress ditch was filled with the thermal water of the Peţa brook in case of siege. The fortress was built of stone and covered with a wave of earth, and the entire city in the shape of a star, each terminal having defense cannons, was one of the most fortunate cities to conquer.

In the fortress there were 10 shops, 150 smaller stone houses, one room for soldiers, three mills and a prison.

The legend says that after the fall of Bude under the Turks, in 1540 they forced the conquest of the fortress, considered the west gate to Transylvania.

The fortress, defended as a spell by the everlasting hot waters of the Pete, was inconclusive! The protective star of the fortress shone until 1660, when Ali, the Pasa of Timisoara, swore to conquer the small fortification at any cost. He came with a great army, the 45,000 Turks climbing the hills of the city. 46 days of fights have put the 850 defenders of the fortress to the test. Hundreds of villagers have fallen prisoners in the hands of the Ottomans. Still, the fortress resists! It seemed that the discouragement included the Turks, for they could not in any way learn the secret of the unspoiled spell that protected their walls. By the time the mara's wife, the only one who knew the secret, learned that her sons were caught by the Turks. Fearful of pain, he decided to do anything to save them. So he betrayed the Fortress, telling the Turks where to dig to open the mouth of the water that filled the great ditch around the defense walls. And so, on August 27, 1660, the fortress capitulated.poze-in-santul-cetatii-oradea.jpg
