Quote of the Day/ Zitat des Tages #87 ENG/DEU

in #life6 years ago

All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.
Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei was an Italian universal scholar. He was a philosopher, mathematician, engineer, physicist, astronomer and cosmologist. Many of his discoveries, especially in mechanics and astronomy, are considered groundbreaking.
In 1589 Galilei was appointed for three years as a university teacher and holder of the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa. He taught Euclid's elements and elementary astronomy as well as astrology to physicians However, the pay was low; yet he managed to build and sell excellent instruments. He also developed a - still very imprecise - thermometer.
Galilei summarized the results of his mechanical investigations in a manuscript that is today quoted as De motu antiquiora and was only printed in 1890.
The attacks on Aristotle were unkindly received by his Aristotelian colleagues in Pisa. Galileo's employment was not renewed in 1592. His material situation was further aggravated by this, that his father had died in 1591 and now, as the eldest son, he had to take responsibility for his siblings
(one brother and three sisters) and mother.
Galileo was one of the first people to use a telescope to observe the sky. This meant a revolution in astronomy, because until then people had to rely on observations with the naked eye. He discovered that the surface of the moon is rough and uneven.
In the autumn of 1610, the Grand Duke of Tuscany and former pupil of Galileo Cosimo II de' Medici appointed him court mathematician, court philosopher and first professor of mathematics in Pisa without any teaching duties. Galileo was thus given full freedom to devote himself entirely to his research.
In 1633, after more than 20 years of confrontation with the Inquisition of the Roman Catholic Church under the threat of torture and death, he was forced to do so, to renounce his alleged falsehoods. This was because he doubted the doctrine that placed the resting earth at the center of the universe.
From then on he lived on an estate near Florence under house arrest.
On 2 November 1992 Galileo Galilei was formally rehabilitated by the Roman Catholic Church.
He is to receive a statue in the Vatican. In November 2008, the Vatican again distanced itself from the condemnation of Galileo by the papal Inquisition.
