Thanks for your post, I've had similar problems of laying in bed for long stretches before finally falling asleep- as confirmed by my phone's sleep apps ;-D I have some trouble simply trying to clear my mind, and I've found body-scan meditations particularly useful for helping me fall asleep. With body scan I'm able to use my mind for a degree of attention- just enough to acknowledge the sensations of my body.
