What is Private Medical Insurance?

Private Medical Insurance (PMI) is designed to provide cover for the costs of medical treatment expenses without being entirely reliant on the National Health Service (NHS). It also plays an important role in helping fund the cost of early diagnosis and treatment of acute conditions. This could be anything from a few sessions of physiotherapy, to more complex procedures such as major heart surgery or biological therapy for the treatment of cancer.

Acute conditions can develop rapidly, can be short in duration and respond to treatment. In the first instance, an individual must obtain a referral from a GP. In the case of a Vitality Personal Healthcare Plan the Vitality GP offers you virtual GP consultations within 48 hours that would save you having to get an appointment with your local NHS GP.

Private hospitals provide a large selection of treatments from the most basic to the more specialised, and can give you ongoing recovery treatments such as physiotherapy, many of which may not be readily available when relying on the NHS. Inevitably the increased choice of hospitals, timing and avoidance of waiting lists that private medical insurance provides come at a price, however this will depend on a number of factors including where you live, type of hospitals selected and the age of persons to be covered.

Plans can be arranged on an individual basis or as part of a business scheme established for a small firm of 2-9 people or larger firms of 10+ people.
