DC community organizer Eugene Puryear joins us for an in-depth discussion on the real alternative to policing that DC is trying out. Called the NEAR Act, the goal of this program is to put public safety in the hands of the people rather than the police who, in many DC neighborhoods, act as an occupying, racist and brutal force.
Eugene also dives into the importance of community self-defense and the gaps in the binary gun argument we love to have in this country. The real solution, he says, isn’t in the gun itself but the culture surrounding it.
Finally, Eugene dissects some systemic issues and outlines blueprints for how we might find and build alternatives - even in the midst of rising fascism.
so he wants to fight gentrification, but wouldn't gentrification lead to far less police violence? If it were gentrified (which means middle and upper class white people moving in) would there still be a problem with murders and police brutality?
"a school shooting a day!"
School shootings have trended lower. Statistically black people don't need guns to defend themselves from white supremacists, they need them to defend themselves from each other.
He wants to have no cops and is upset that white people "have been allowed to arm themselves". And he said that "racism and bigotry is what drives a lot of gun ownership"
seems to me black guns are pretty popular. The rise of white vigilante violence? when did that happen?
hey bobby, i noticed someome downvoted ya
lucky for me I had the force of truth on my side! That guy sounded reasonable enough until he started spouting naked racism.
Your posts are great and very good
soo good...grat post.. ;0
Eugene is a great voice for change, also check out micheal wood jr for his community policing projects
I dont think this is not a good idea... I think black police should used in black neigborhoods and communities since it seems the white ones are racist.
It's great to see you on the steem blockchain, Eleanor!
A very interesting interview. As an outsider, though, my suggestion would be to eject DC from the Union rather than giving them State Status. 😎
Good luck love your articles @johnskotts ❤️
