RE: Are governments deliberately poisoning the cryptographic/cryptocurrency well?

in #life8 years ago

Wow, Satoshi as a government actor? That's a scary thought, and taking distrust of government to a whole new level of paranoia. I choose not to believe that, because otherwise it might shake my faith in the whole crypto ecosystem. But while we're on the subject of government meddling: what if all the recent attacks on the Ethereum network were actually engineered by the NSA? After all, the attacks are fairly sophisticated from what I understand (but I'm no expert on the technical details). They could only be carried out by a person or organization with a large amount of resourcefulness. And they are persistent; new attack vectors keep getting found as fast as the Ethereum Foundation can plug them. And the US government might have an interest in disrupting projects that make them uncomfortable and which they view as frustratingly difficult to enforce their jurisdiction over, such as The DAO and Augur. But who knows, maybe the Ethereum Foundation itself is behind the attacks as a way of stress testing the network before the next major protocol upgrade? Ah, I love a good conspiracy theory with my morning coffee.

I don't want to believe it either but I think we need to at least consider it.

It's possible.

I love them too. You just have to be careful not to get lost down the rabbit hole.
