Introduction

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

I am retired along with my wife of 42 years. She loves to read so spends most of her time doing that. I enjoy woodworking and spend a lot of time on that. I have a Pinterest page where I post pictures of all my finished projects. This pic is one I recently did.

You can also see all my work at http://pin.it/-drimd8

We also enjoy boating a lot which is a new thing for us. Never thought we'd get into it like we are. We want to take the boat to Charleston SC and do some sightseeing from the ocean.

I'm also retired Army, '95.

Welcome to Steemit!
Nice table, I have had a hand in small wood working projects for myself.
I am gonna follow you for more of your woodworking projects, can't wait to see what else you make!

Have a great day Sir! 😃 Right now the hubby and I are building a timber framed cabin, hoping to go off grid sooner then later. If you'd like to follow our journey you can find us here @leemlaframboise @medic8553 or #north-woods

Thank you. Be sure to check out my Pinterest page that I referenced in the introduction. I really enjoy woodworking. Been at it for about 3 years. Started with pallet wood because I didn't want to spend money on wood until I developed a few skills. That proved to be a good approach. I started because we wanted to build an off the grid house as well and I wanted to build all the furniture. I built a proof on concept house using the building methods I wanted to use but it was on the grid. It was a small one bedroom house that we loved. Life things happened and we sold and moved to South Carolina. You can see what we did at our Facebook page documenting the whole thing. There's one list at the top that provides an overview and the suggest you go to the bottom and start looking at posts from there. There's a lot there. So good luck and let me know what you think. Good luck on your house.

Welcome! I just checked out your pinterest page and wow, your work is incredible! I'm a huge fan of woodworking as well. How long have you been woodworking? And how steep is the learning curve? I just followed you and hope you find some of my work interesting and follow me back!

Thanks. Woodworking is a great thing to do for yourself and those close to you. It's also fun for others but very difficult to make a living at it with the techniques I use. Takes too long to make it worthwhile unless someone wants to pay the price. Kind of a starving artist situation. I've been at it for about 3 years. Started with pallet wood to minimize the expense of making mistakes. Funny thing is nothing was thrown away or scrapped. I was shocked. Still have some of those pieces. Rest of it was given away as I moved onto nicer wood like cedar that I mill.

Have you tried selling your pieces much or just more so kept it for yourself/gifts? Ive seen some sites get crazy amounts for some of their products!
Some buddies and I started a longboard company where we made the longboards ourselves. It kind of dissolved, however I've got 3 orders right now from friends with two extra blank decks that I will try to sell.

I haven't actively tried selling. I started woodworking because I didn't want to buy new furniture or cabinets or pay for someone to do something for me and then not be what I really wanted. So, I do it myself. Recently got a sawmill so I can go from log to furniture.

I have sold a few things but I'm finding that it takes too long to produce something. So I end up working for pennies so to speak.

But really the point for me is I'm retired and don't want another business unless I have to.

Congratulations on the retirement and for sharing your hobbys. You will probably inspire many others to pursue their hobbys as well. Have a great day.

WOW retired at 42.. Welcome to Steemit. This is the perfect place for someone who has a lot of spare time! How does it feel to be retired at such a young age?

Lol. Where'd you get that retired at 42? I'm 65 and retired about 8 years ago while my wife was still working.

HAHAHAHA! I totally miss-read that :D I thought it said you were 42 years-old, and that you were already retired lol! My bad :)
