Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose

My mom jokes a lot that we will have everything finished by Christmas. That goes for everything, for all activities, whether repairs, projects or chores, and it goes for their home but also for ours. Her joke has intensified in the last two or three months whenever we talk on the phone and I tell her how we are doing with our home renovations. Of course, we always add with a laugh that everything will be fine and done by that holiday - but that the year is not set. It can happen at any Christmas.

That always helps, because through humour work and issues don't seem so difficult and we see them from a different perspective. We help ourselves to overcome some things more easily. Well, you see, Christmas is approaching in my home and the chores I wanted to finish... may not be done this year.

Our latest adventures related to smaller bathroom changes are currently in the spotlight, the only question is whether it will be finished by this Christmas or some other in the upcoming years.

We wanted to change the semicircular shower tray and the corresponding shower screen for the same tray for a new, more modern one. The shower tray was decent, not the newest and had some signs of use but it could be used perfectly for more years, but the shower screen already had imperfections and the lime that stuck to it no longer gave it a nice appearance. The doors of it were not the best either so it was on the list of things to change in some near future.

After a few weeks of investigating what we would like to have and in which size, colour and design we ordered everything we needed (rectangular shower tray, rectangular glass shower screens with two sliding doors, tiles, tap with shower...) but we had to find a person who knew how to make all these changes. That is, a bricklayer to remove the old tiles and put new ones around the new shower tray, and a plumber to change the pipes if needed, install the new tray and set up the new shower screen.

The search for the right person has been quite a complicated task because we couldn't find anyone, and when we found someone they weren't available on these dates. In the end, through a recommendation, I found a plumber who was able to come with his bricklayer colleague and give us a detailed description of the work and the price of his labour. They were punctual, kind and precise. Perfect, we agreed.

Feel free to skip the following paragraph, it is actually not relevant to the point where I want to get.

In the meantime, the shower tray arrived on time as we ordered, but the screen arrived late. It's a story with the delivery company that contacted us to say that the screen would arrive on Thursday, 5th of December, so my husband could be at home and wait for it. The whole day went by and they didn't show up, and when my husband looked at the app it said that they had already delivered the screen on Tuesday. What? We already thought that they had stolen the package hahaha. There was no way to contact them and ask them what was going on... The screen package arrived on Monday of the following week. Only four days later than scheduled.

All good, the craftsmen came on the agreed day, this Saturday and the work started. I guess the neighbours didn't expect this kind of waking up at 8 am, with such a noise that a bathroom renovation can entail. 😆

The bricklayer and the plumber were nice and did their work, we didn't want to bother them a lot but they always asked about our opinion of how we wanted some details to look. Everything went as planned; they installed the new shower tray and the tiles around it and as the last stage it was time to set up the shower screen. Four screens actually, two fixed parts and two sliding doors.

Yes, that is my hand opening the sliding door of the shower screen. Everyone can do that... but hey, look at this. A magic trick - a Hiver putting her hand through the glass shower screen!

It seems we arrived at the point of my post 😂

We are missing one of the fixed screens because the plumber accidentally dropped (or hit) it while fixing it to the frame. It shattered into little pieces (it is made of tempered glass) in no time. It was an accident, nobody imagined that this routine job would end with a broken screen. Everything has a solution, so don't worry, the plumber will fix this part by the end of this week. He said that he would pay the cost of the new part because it was his fault that it broke, but since the screen was the most expensive part of this whole story, I feel very sorry for him because he will lose a huge part of what he earned with this work. When he was leaving on Saturday he said something like no worries, sometimes we win and sometimes we lose.

I keep feeling sorry for him and this situation. He and his colleague worked for almost six hours in our home and because of this accident, his profit will be considerably reduced. His reaction was surprising as he stayed calm and even continued to whistle some tunes as they finished their work. However, I am constantly asking myself if is it really the craftsman's part to pay for the broken shower screen, or should we contribute to it, even though it was his job to install it and not break it?; if I wanted to risk breaking the glass screen, then we would try to install it ourselves, right? So these are my doubts now.

How would you feel if you were in my place? Or how would you feel if you were this plumber? Have you found yourself in a similar situation?

Tempered glass shouldn't break so easily... is there any chance to claim from the manufacturer for faulty product?

It's a tricky situation, and it plays on your conscience. It really depends on how good a job you think they've done and how much, if any, you think it will cost to make yourselves feel less bad about the situation. Alternatively if can give him more work to make up for some of his loss

We didn't even think about it as it didn't arrive as a faulty product and it broke because of incorrect handling so no way to claim anything from the manufacturer. And the plumber knew it was the impact (probably at one of the corners) that made the glass shatter, I wasn't by their side when it happened, we just heard it from the other room where we were. The rest of the work they did well... yesterday morning he already ordered a new screen and sent me a message that it will arrive during this week. He seems honest and responsible, but the story will finish just when we have all the parts fixed. 😅

I am going to take a shower now!! jajaja just to relax

Hahaha, enjoy the shower! Until it is finished I can just shower con cuidado, para no mojar todo el cuarto de baño 😅

Well, I would look at it this way. His, should I say, clumsiness caused the breakage so yes it is his cost to bear. The customer is king. How would you feel if he had said, "sorry not my problem"? If the good voice in your head wins against the bad voice, you could always give him a little extra bonus when the job is finished. Hopefully before christmas!

At the time it happened, I thought we would have to buy another screen. 😵 But he said it would be at his expense. He certainly didn't break it on purpose, it was a clumsy move, an accident... Hahaha, yeah, hopefully we will have it before Christmas 2024 😂 and if so, and all goes well, I might think of a little extra bonus, yes. After all, he also feels a little bad about it because we didn't get the finished "product" we hired him to do by the day he planned to have it done.

Guess these things happen, I look forward to hearing what happens in the end LOL

That is nice the the plumber was fast to take responsibility. I don't know the cost of such things, but I might offer to go half or something and call it his Christmas present.

The ads have popped up and obscured part of someone else's comment that was here.

Interesting. I wondered how bad they would be.

PS. I came back on a different front end. :) I'm sorry they decided to use ads, but I know, that is just me. :)

Well, the cost of everything is not small, we already paid for everything once plus their labour, so paying once again for the screen would be painful haha
Now it is painful for him, so that is why I feel sorry 🤐

Ads - spotted them yesterday evening while publishing this post, I was confused. You can block the ads in your browser ;)

I understand about the cost and "maybe" he is insured for such things and it won't cost him a fortune... one can hope.

Someone had posted in the Snaps how to block them and I did that immediately, but now I think it only blocks them from being on the posts I make and doesn't block me from seeing them on other people's posts, as I still saw them as I was reading multiple posts last night and as I type this, they are on the bottom and side of the screen here again. When they change, it makes the screen go up and down while I type.

I have done by myself almost all the restoration of the house where I lived in Argentina and it is a hard work, I have changed pipes, put ceramic tiles, changed the kitchen, made almost complete the bathroom... what a work... but it is a risk that the masons have... something can break and I suppose that they contemplate it, that's why sometimes the cost of labour is so high. Don't feel bad, these things happen.

I didn't know you could do these things! If I knew I would call you to help out haha, my husband wanted to start alone when we couldn't find anyone but we didn't want to break something - what in the end happened 😆

When I was in Argentina we couldn't afford to pay for labour, so we learned with my brother to do everything. There are things that I shouldn't have done.... excessive efforts, but there was no choice. These things can happen, it happened to us, something always breaks. Even the most careful.
Don't worry... that's life.

Have a great day! I'm here between scarves and handkerchiefs hahaha.

My parents and the parents of my husband also did everything by themselves, constructed their own houses, maybe with a little help from professionals but the majority of things they did alone.

Scarves and handkerchiefs, sounds as a collection...I am wondering why hahahah 🤪

I will be back to see those scarves just late in the evening when I arrive from work, which is between 22h and 23h
Esta semana se me hace muy larga, ya deseo que sea jueves o viernes y solo es martes... 😑

There will be a special guest who let me take two pictures of her wearing one of my scarves hahaha good luck today!!!

Special guests are very welcome ;))

What bad luck for the worker, it's very rare that the tempered glass would break that easily.

I think my decision would depend on how he behaved before and after the accident, if before he was nice and after he became rude and bad tempered I would probably not feel bad and would not think of reaching any settlement but from what you say is not the case.

He has been responsible, respectful and did not damage the environment after the accident. In this case I would pay him a little more if I have the means to do it, in that case we would all lose equally for that accident and my conscience would be better.

Hehehehe you asked for my opinion 😉 🤭. @mipiano 🥰

Humor can fix everything but broken glass. 🤣

He was kind and didn't change his behaviour, he even cut his finger in that accident, it was bleeding but he said it was nothing, just asked for an adhesive band-aid. He already ordered a replacement for the screen, let's hope it arrives this week and he can instal it, so when I see the final result and I am satisfied a little extra can be considered indeed :D

Humor can fix everything but broken glass. 🤣

Hahaha, that is true 😂
