Three-Tune Tuesday: A Miscellaneous Mixture

I'm a little late for this week's 'Three-Tune Tuesday', but what's new? A few days ago I started writing the next 'Horrors of Kwiksave' chapter stalling at around 350 words. What can I say; sometimes I'm not in the right frame of mind to write about specific content.

It happens to us all. Not writer's block, more being a lazy bastard who can't be bothered. The depleting value of BTC is probably a factor, not that it should matter much.

Since 'Three-Tune Tuesday' appeared it's given me a lot more flexibility in the types of music I can shill, some of it being from decades ago.

Today's 'Three-Tune Tuesday' will be an odd mixture of old and new songs that have recently passed me by, for one reason or another.

Porcupine Tree – Shesmovedon (Deadwing - 2005)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

There are two versions of this song knocking around and fortunately for me, I picked up on the better one first. ‘Lightbulb Sun’ is my least favourite album by one of my most favourite artists and that 'Shesmovedon', in my opinion, is inferior to the 'Deadwing' version that came several years later.

Why was it remastered? Was Steven Wilson unhappy about the original one? It's a question I should have asked him when we met, but being star-struck only gibberish came out of my mouth.

…and why not 'She's Moved On'? Adding the title as a single word seems strange to me. Regardless this is a cracking track full of distorted guitars and a layered vocal harmonic chorus that improves significantly on the original version.

Add a very distorted guitar ending and lengthy outro, and you have the makings of something semi-decent. This could have possibly been single material.

Maroon 5 – Sugar (V - 2015)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

Adam Levine doesn't half sport a great falsetto. Having this ability can brighten up otherwise dull songs and for this reason I have been drawn to Maroon 5 on several occasions.

The first time I was made aware of Maroon 5 was the dreary ‘This Love’ in 2002 that made an impression on the UK charts, but not me. What it did was make me aware of their existence. Since then I have pricked my ears up on several occasions.

I wouldn't say I am a fan, but they do output the odd song that garners my interest. Videos such as this with other surplus noise that distract from the music I am not a fan of. You can't have everything.

It does make a change for me to indulge in a band or artist that has not split or dissolved into oblivion.

The Beatles – Here, There And Everywhere (Revolver - 1966)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

Should this be credited to Paul McCartney? I'm currently listening to one of his several biographies while travelling to work and back and am fascinated by the rich history of the Beatles early humble beginnings.

The credits of Lennon-McCartney were always contentious. My opinion is the latter was the more talented of the duo, but John did add grit to some of Paul’s more soppy material.

From what I am reading, bringing up this topic tended to start fireworks so it was brushed under the carpet often, something McCartney would regret in later years.

These types of Beatles songs have Paul stamped all over them. Written about Jane Asher, his flame-haired beau of the time it’s riddled with emotion and meanders up and down through the major and minor scales bestowing the listener with melancholy.

Strangely enough, it’s my daughter @dismayedworld who pushed me into listening to more Beatles songs.

While I am no stranger to their work, I never bothered listening to the likes of 'Rubber Soul' or 'Revolver'. It's not all 'Please Please Me'; the later material is quite deep and thought-provoking.

There is something that draws you to Maroon 5, that video was really well thought out and fun. I don't know if it's an American thing or I'm just weird, but I couldn't do the feign joyful laugh and jump they do when the band is revealed. But American happiness and positivity is infectious.

I see you are still haunted by your time at Kwiksave, I'm still haunted by my time at McDonald's, only a cute girl on the til kept my motivation up. Only working at McDonald's wasn't cool...

There is something that draws you to Maroon 5

They do have some talent, a rare thing in today's masses of mediocrity and blandness.

I see you are still haunted by your time at Kwiksave

This series has been running for literally years, I just want to finish it. Two more posts will conclude it. McDonalds sounds like a modern day equivalent.

Whats up with crashing weddings, everyone going crazy (even bride and groom), sounds like his balls never dropped 🙃?

Beatles..., no comment, that was more or less my era, not hysterical hyper mania shown toward them as many did. Agree early music most definitely had something to smile about.

!BEER I need it, will send one to find flowing passion describing KwikSave horrors.

sounds like his balls never dropped

LOL, he's a high pitched singer, like Phil Collins was once.. 😄

that was more or less my era, not hysterical hyper mania shown toward them as many did.

Oh, you were not one of those screamers that passed out?

Would relate more to BeeGees, hey ho I liked Philimon also managed to see him live in Durban.

Nah never made sense of screamers, are you listening to music, or wailing like a cat on the sidelines?

I'd never heard of Porcupine Hill before - cracking song. Just checked in Spotify and its not even listed in their top 10 - so they must have some really good other tunes too !

I'd never heard of Porcupine Hill before - cracking song.

Tree you mean? I would argue with that Spotify top 10 in areas, though the #1 spot is justified. If you like what you hear, then I envy you getting into that juicy back catalogue. I did it in 2015, what a trip.

Yep - sorry, Tree lol. I've been listening to them on spotify - really like them. Good blend of rock, pop, blues and prog !

The Beatles have always irritated me. I don't know why. With the exception of Eleanor Rigby!

Like Stone Temple Pilots then? 😀. I have my own quirks, such as Coldplay.. I hate Chris Martin's vocal, it grates on me...!

Yes, quirks are a fine thing! I have chuffing loads 🤣🤣

That video for Sugar is really awesome. Even more so when you read the backstory behind it. I've been a fan of Maroon 5 since there first album. There were just some really good songs on there. Then they just kept showing up every couple of years with a new bop and you had to respect their staying power.

They have been around for a while now, so yes.. staying power. Most of these bands vanish within a few years. I just wish they'd shut up when I'm taking in the music. All that noise of wedding guests is distracting.

So listen to the song on Spotify or somewhere else. Hell, find someone that made a lyric video of the song! :) You're like a grumpy old man! I should know because I'm one too!

Deadwing is a great album. That may have been the first from PT I listened to just before I saw them live.

If Maroon 5 turned up at my wedding I probably wouldn't recognise them. I've heard the hits, but don't know them otherwise.

The Beatles could make perfect little pop songs. That one is half the length of the other two, but has it all. I have a friend who plays a lot of their stuff at our sessions, but I've not done many of their songs.

The Beatles could make perfect little pop songs.

Yes, I always knew the repertoire of singles but not the album tracks. A few years ago, @dismayedworld was throwing Norwegian Wood at me, unsuccessfully. She's a right fan of them.

The last four, including the Incident are all great. The other three are better but that doesn't mean the final one is bad, it's better than most of the other crap that's about.

I've heard a few people do Norweigan Wood at various sessions. It's a typical McCartney story song.

I had an feeling this was a John song, and it is..

Yeah, but some lyrics from Paul. I've seen some story that John wan't keen on Maxwell's Silver Hammer and called it "more of Paul's granny music". I think there's some music hall influence there, but then bands like Genesis took it up. In the late 60s various bands were inventing what popular music could be.

I've seen some story that John wan't keen on Maxwell's Silver Hammer and called it "more of Paul's granny music"

Yes, that an Ob-Li-Di.., quite funny the reference. Neither songs do a lot for me,

The Kinks did it too with Lola. Not so different from Benny Hill's Ernie really.

I too first heard of Maroon 5 because of their song This Love. But I liked it, and continued to listen to their music. I even bought a few of their albums. I liked Adam Levine's vocals, and the band's playing. Their songs turned a bit too pop and mainstream near the latter part of their career, but I think it was still good.

I listen to Porcupine Tree quite a lot, not much else :)

You have good taste!

I listen to a lot of new music, but tiny sticks in my ears :)

If I’m to choose my best here, I’d go for Maroon 5. The performance is lovely and how the video was directed like a wedding party. Their voices are so lovely too
It’s just the perfect song
