5 Often Overlooked Details To Get Votes & Follows (EN/ESP)

in Loving HIVE ❤3 years ago

Here's a phenomenon that seems unfair.

Let's say you write thousands of valuable, amazing, heartfelt words... and get no votes or follows from them. Perhaps you were hoping to get curated by @ocd or @tipu, so you poured a lot of love into your content, and having it passed by can feel terrible, like a punch in the gut. Or maybe as if society is spitting on your work. But the situation isn't exactly what it feels like, and that 'unfairness' feeling will distract you from the truth.

And the truth is that usually getting ignored means we dropped the ball somewhere. It happens because we're not as good as we like to think at something that really matters:

Getting people to actually click on our 'great content' & check it out.

Chances are we may be good at writing an article, but not good at persuading people to pay attention long enough to read it, or even open it. We're often not great at convincing people to follow us with the tools we have.

Many of my posts have performed fairly well, with only a handful of followers, but a month ago I made a photo-retouching post, and it earned much less than my other posts. It was basically 'ignored.' I didn't complain, I didn't get mad, I simply started exploring what I did wrong. I started looking at how well my post persuaded people to click. I looked at whether or not it persuaded photographers or photography lovers to follow me.

Because persuading people to click & follow is a very different skill than expressing our thoughts in text or writing a blog.

And there are 5 things people are looking for --and judging (yes, judging) you on-- when they engage with you on Hive or most social platforms. You could create the best content in the world, but if you refuse to improve the 5 elements I'm about to cover, your content, (unfortunately) will likely be ignored.

fireI originally wrote these 5 up because @gabstar , a member of the @rutablockchain discord asked me for tips on succeeding on Hive. (I did a interview with @danielvehe & @enmy recently, translated into Español by @cynshineonline , not sure if the recording is available.) You may already have guessed from the thumbnail what they are, but let's explore them a bit deeper.

1. USERNAME

The internet is a big, 'anonymous' place. When people 'meet' you online, they're not meeting your smile, your clothes, or your handshake. As they scroll, they're not being introduced to you with 'hi, my name is so-and-so.' Instead, they receive whatever you present to them. And your name says a lot about you. A name like 'Candy' or 'Bambi' will spark certain feelings in a reader. A name like 'Spencer' or 'Urkel' will spark quite different feelings. Your username can do a lot of work to get people to follow you if you use it well to spark desired emotions in others or otherwise convey value.

Think About It...

2. PROFILE PICTURE

In real life, you make subconscious snap conclusions about people based on their appearance. We don't want or aim to 'judge a book by its cover', but we all have very different feelings inside us from walking past a petite, delicate beauty queen than we do from a hulking, 7-foot UFC fighter. We all have different feelings from a thin, disheveled, bespectacled teen than we do from a corduroy-wearing, bearded elder. Online, 'first impressions' are made by our profile photo or the 'avatar' we choose. People are paying close attention to your photo to decide whether or not to engage with you. Have you put enough energy into yours?

Think About It...
Which profile photo is more compelling to you? A tiny far away body shot, or a beautifully lit close-up of someone's face? Compare Eva Longoria's profile pic:

3. BIO LINE

Have you heard of an 'elevator pitch' in business or a 'logline' for a screenplay? These are what are used when creators in those fields want to convince others to 'give them a shot.' They're attention-getting, concise blurbs that communicate a lot of value to the receiver in an elegant way. These lines make people want to learn more, explore, and dig deeper. It inspires people to 'follow' you.

Think about it...
As a viewer/reader, what line is more compelling to you?

"Hi I do lots of things and post about whatever I want like singing, dancing, and horoscopes, I hope you like it!"
Or...
"Teacher Of Rebels. The 'Eminem' Of The Self-Help World. (Follow for secrets to mastering life that you won't learn anywhere else!)"

4. HEADLINES

I've written about headlines multiple times, because they're insanely important. Imagine how many headlines your viewers are being bombarded with a day. Imagine how picky they are about which ones they click on. Imagine that your headlines are competing with all the other headlines in their feed, including major media outlets like Buzzfeed, Mashable, etc. This is the reality of things. Most people's content-consuming decisions hinge on the headlines they see, and some publisher's out there put a ton of time and energy into their headlines with the aim of compelling viewers to click. Are you doing the same?

Think About It...
Which headline would snap people out of auto-pilot-scrolling their feed and click?

"People Should Join Hive 'Cause It's Good!"
or
"Why Hive's New Social Platform Is Perfect For Trump (Try It Free!)"

5. THUMBNAIL

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but if your thumbnail is subpar, it might as well be a thousand bad words about how much your content isn't worth reading. A great thumbnail, on the other hand, speaks volumes to viewers about the quality of the content inside. It persuades them that if they click, the article will be worth their time. It may seem unfair that people are judging your writing based on a pretty picture, but that's almost the only thing they have to go on. They can't read your writing yet. They're not comparing your writing yet (besides your headline, usually), and so the only other piece of data they have to decide on your post is the thumbnail. Make their lives easier and make your content more compelling to them. Take the time to make a great thumbnail image.

Think About It...

Whew! There we have it. These 5 things are what viewers are constantly judging your content on. They're comparing you to the 'competition' (they're entire feed, everywhere). They're comparing your 5 elements to everybody else's that they follow. So it's important to be honest with yourself...

Do your 5 elements measure up to other people out there?

Have you really poured enough love into them? Have you improved your headline skills and image skills? If so, how much? Enough? Are you bold enough to actually change your username? Or at least spend an hour or two on a bio line? After all, it's something that's in all potential follower's faces, fairly often, might be worth investing some energy, right?

Anyway, if you want to get votes, curation, followers, etc... you have one job: to "win over people's judgment." And you have the same few tools everyone else on social has to accomplish this. I've outlined 5 of the most important ones here, with the aim of helping you understand more clearly what they are and how they affect your viewers. I could 'keep all these secrets' to myself, but I just want more people on Hive to succeed. I care about you and want you to win.

So I hope this makes sense and gives you ideas on how to grow on Hive.

Thanks so much for reading, commenting, sharing, or even skimming. Wishing you a great day!

private mastermind group, but because so many people were asking about successful Hive-content in the interview, I expanded on it and turned it into this post. Thanks for inspiring this, I really appreciate you.

No me quejé, no me enfadé, simplemente empecé a explorar qué había hecho mal.

00180 - Avatar, Bio, Banner, Byline_C.png

¿Quieres mejorar tus titulares?

5. PULGARES

¿Suficiente?

Sort:

Agreed on all that you say, however, there is another aspect on Hive, especially early on, and that is whether it's posted at a time when a curator sees it to then get it a vote from the big curators. Your post that got missed could well have just been bad timing and got to far dorm the feeds of your followers and missed. Once you have established yourself and gotten enough accounts who've decided they want to autovote you, this becomes less of an issue, earnings wise. How may of them actually read the post is another thing entirely.

That said, even if you aren't getting the attention and votes you hope for to start with, this is certainly the best approach, just don't give up.

Thanks for this, @minismallholding ! You raise an excellent point about post-timings. That can definitely play a role. Hopefully if a person makes enough posts, eventually they catch the right timing, lol.

And you raise another great point about people actually 'reading' our posts, rather than auto-voting. I do my best to write clearly and well, so readers have an easy time understanding my intentions, but I've definitely noticed many people voting/commenting on my posts while only skimming them, or even not reading them at all. :) It's good to be aware of this, and I believe it makes my tips even more important. If people are only reading the title/thumbnail and not reading the article, then these two elements become 'extra important' in that case, right?

I also love your conclusion here... "just don't give up." That's pretty solid advice in any endeavor we pursue, I'd say. Thanks for this excellent comment, wishing you a great day! 🙏

If people are only reading the title/thumbnail and not reading the article, then these two elements become 'extra important' in that case, right?

Absolutely. This way you are more likely to actually attract people in to read who do see it.

I was also going to add, but was being rushed, that for the early days on Hive when you're trying to get seen, if you're posting regularly (once a day for example) you aren't going to get big votes from the curation projects on every single post, because they are trying to spread votes across lots of different accounts. So, with ocd for example, if you've already had three votes that week you won't get any more. These projects don't want to be seen showing favouritism, after all. 😉

Totally agreed.

And very interesting point regarding curation projects, and I understand. That said, I care little for 'appearances' and would prefer people curate on 'merit' or 'value' alone, but I get that many people would rather not be seen showing favoritism.

Great addition to the discussion, definitely something to be aware of, especially for early-days, thanks again! 🙏

Hey @juanpabloleon , thank you so much for this comment. I'm happy you found my post easy, brief, and profound and huge congratulations for applying some self-reflection. Looking forward to your upcoming changes and growing success. Hugs! 🙏

Excellent ✨ thank you very much to you for taking the time and helping us. When we got to Hive we felt a bit lost, in my case not for the ideas to publish but for the handling of the platform and how to reach the audience in question. Thanks for answering our doubts and for this post that really is very helpful, who would say that the details that do not lend much attention are the most relevant for the viewer❤️

P.S. Sorry if the English is not good, but I speak very little.

Thank you for this kind comment! Hive can be a bit overwhelming but I do my best to make it a bit more understandable. I'm glad you found value in this post. And I agree with you!

Thanks for your comment, wishing you a great day!

P.S. Your English is fine for me, keep up the great work! 🙏

Thank you😊

Most important: Do not only take votes, but give them away, too.

Excellent point, thank you for contributing! 🙏

Hi,
I think things need to stay in a "natural" setting.
Create a post and present photos and a story, an idea, serves to introduce yourself to others, to promote your idea, to surprise or intrigue and to share a work done as an author (a product, a drawing, a photo, a poem, a trip....)
But everything must (should) remain in a natural way, empathetic, between the author and the reader.
If a girl shows me her boobs to "grab" me to read her post, I won't read it. Why are you showing me your boobs (do you think I don't ask that question before, eventually, click your post)?
If an author studies all the possible ways to get the "greatest success", using all the strategies to "grab" the reader, I know that the content could be less important because after all there are all the strategies to attract my attention.
I can read once, I can interact.... but it won't last because I know that person produces posts with the strategy, just with the "deception".
Content is more important than strategies.
Each of us can evaluate for ourselves if a poem is badly written, if a story is badly written or if a photo is badly done. In part everything can be traced back to our feelings (what is beautiful to me may be ugly to another person)...but we don't need or want to be "attracted" with tricks in something.

I worked (and still work) in advertising....
This world is horrible.
Personally, I expect (I like) people to be natural when they communicate something, to be "real", and not the result of "deceptive" automatisms and comnuicative systems.
I upvoted a "0.003" and happy with that
:D
Have a nice day... :)
Ciao

Hi!

Everyone's entitled to their own preferences. If you like 'natural', great, I encourage it. I love boobs, but if you don't, more power to you.

As you said:

what is beautiful to me may be ugly to another person

I totally agree. And what works for me may not work for another person.

If you want to ignore, skip, or avoid putting thought and care into the 5 elements I've outlined here, that's completely your freedom to do so.

If you believe spending an hour writing a headline is a 'trick', that's fine. :) To me, it's effort and care.

I encourage you to do whatever feels best to you and gets you the results you're aiming for in life, whatever those are. :)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here, wishing you a nice day as well! :) Ciao! 🙏

I love boobs too.
That wasn't the point.
I posted something recently in "Loving HIVE" community and no one, not even you, put an appreciation.
If I had spent 1 hour embellishing the title and text, you would not have appreciated my "effort" equally, simply because you don't care about what I posted.
Otherwise I could put up pictures of women with their boobs out. what do you think? :)

I think someone who gets less appreciation than they desire may benefit from reading more carefully and paying a lot more attention to someone who's crushing it on Hive. ;)

I think you are taking it personally...it is not my intention to personally attack anyone or you, who produce posts that I always enjoy reading....
anyway, thanks for your time/strategy/efforts.

I rarely take anything personally, it seems unlikely I'd start now. :) I simply answered your question:

What do you think? :)

I answered exactly what I think. I make a point of studying people who succeed at their craft, and I suggest others adopt a similar habit.

My blog here is brimming with value for people who'd like to increase the appreciation they receive here on Hive. That appeared to be something you desire, and so, I encourage deeper, more attentive study of the tips that have been offered.

I'm not sure how to be clearer. Either way, I appreciate all your comments and contributions to the discussion. Thank you for your time/efforts as well! :) Wishing you a wonderful weekend. 🙏

Perhaps you believe people don't care about what you're posting? Perhaps it was because you didn't believe in what you were posting? Beliefs, moods, and choices are everything.

You state that

Content is more important than strategies.
Each of us can evaluate for ourselves if a poem is badly written, if a story is badly written or if a photo is badly done.

But if you don't compel people to look at what you wrote with a captivating headline or thumbnail, then why should anyone click on the poem to even read it to find out if it's good or bad?

You get one second before the person is scrolling past your post and if your photo or headline doesn't captivate them then they will move onto the next one who will. It's not deception, it's just the way social media (Hive or centralized social media) works. Everyone here and on ALL socials is 'fighting' for attention for their content. If you don't make it appealing in that one second with the photo and title then people will just keep going by. It's just facts.

censorship or content length or quality content or good hooks might be helpful. He posts it all to help people get more attention on their content. He has YEARS of experience doing this and knows what he's talking about. He has successful clients with 3 million subscribers on YouTube (and huge numbers on other centralized platforms too). Listening to his advice might help. But you're free to choose to do whatever feels best to you.Maybe having a closer look at some of @ryzeonline's posts on

Either way...wishing you much joy and success.

Hi,
I am not hating on anyone or taking away from anyone's professionalism.
I've worked for 15 years and still work in advertising and help advertisers make graphic choices, in their best interest.
Each of us presumably has experience in the work we've been doing for years, but that doesn't imply that I should blindly accept anyone's talk.
We talk and exchange opinions (that's what a "social" is for, not for genuflecting and counting "likes").
I create things in graphics, things that may or may not be liked, but I do them primarily for my own satisfaction, not to chase the status of numbers.
If someone likes the graphics in a post, they'll show interest, otherwise not.
Here on Hive there is a community related to a 3D program (Blender). It's not very popular here, and I regret it... maybe it's time to be more present because in other social networks Blender attracts more visitors and engagement.
The graphics and images speak for themselves, probably there is less interest in general inside Hive for this type of creativity.
Other graphics-related communities are also under-attended here, as I can see. I think that's a shame.
Also 3Speak is an underutilized service and for the Hive ecosystem it is definitely very useful.
There are areas of communication where everything doesn't necessarily have to be based on text "effectiveness".

Wishing you much joy and success. Ciao.

Excellent post, Dr. B. These are things we've discussed many times and things You've taught me over the years. I've had a lot of success when I take care and put time into each of these elements that You mention. I would probably still be 1craftybeach if it wasn't for You lol.
I just talked to one of our clients about profile pics when pitching people. I said "I can tell how serious they are about their business and how much care they put into what they're doing based on their profile pic" And she asked me how...I told her "If there's a fuzzy pic or a fuzzy filtered pic, or worse...a random pic of something that isn't them...typically (not always) but usually, they're not putting a lot of focus on their profile, let alone their biz, their personal-dev, etc. and I'm not going to bother with them." People don't realize that others are paying close attention to these elements that help them decide if they're going to engage or not.

We've put into lots of love and focus on our bios, our headlines (I mean we've literally spent time picking apart a sentence or a headline just to make it compelling and persuasive) that a lot of people overlook.

I know I'm not clicking on half-assed headlines or fuzzy thumbnails, let alone liking it.

Thanks for using my pics (those are two of my faves) and for tagging me. I'm sure this post will be very helpful for those wanting to improve their visibility, engagement, and attention.

~love, Cyn

Thank you for this, and I'm so glad you've evolved these five elements and more over time.

You raise a good point, and I believe it relates to the maxim:

"How one does the small things is how one does the big."

(ie: If someone puts little effort into their thumbnail, avatar, or headlines, it's fairly reasonable to conclude there won't be much effort in the rest of their content.

Is this always true? Perhaps, perhaps not. But the main thing is, this is how viewers are often making decisions on what to click.

My pleasure, thank you for contributing to the discussion! 🙏

great advice!

@tipu curate

Always appreciated :) 🙏

Damn, man @ryzeonline, you're such a Superstar that fell on our laps from nowhere! This shit is on fire, Em.

(grin) I'm honored you feel that way bro. And it's totally mutual. 😁🙏

Saludos. 🙏

I'm glad the title and cover photo caught your attention, and that you found some value in the tips. Feel free to apply them as much or as little as you like, according to your beliefs. Regards! 🙏

P.S. @newbies-guide Perhaps this may be valuable to share with your audience? 🤔

I always need a bucket of cold water, it reminds me of the book "the 7 habits of highly effective people", from now on I put into practice and correct the mistakes in the profile and form the guidelines for the contents to come later.
Thank you for sharing and for being willing to help.
my greetings and respects, blessings.Hi @ryzeonline first of all thanks for the mention I realize that I did not just go to listen, I was heard, these tips that you bring us to relusir in this post are really very efficient and perhaps for one reason or another we let them slip through our fingers.

My pleasure and thank you @soychalbed ! I'm glad you found some value in these things we all sometimes let slip through our fingers!

I really enjoyed "The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People", and I can see the relevance here, for sure.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, kind comments, and contributing to the discussion! Greetings, respects, and blessings! 🙏

¡Saludos, respetos y bendiciones! 🙏

Excellent post, very good advice, thank you very much for it.

Thanks very much! And I'm so glad you commented! I was unable to find you and tag your username. I saw you asked some questions about singing, acting, art in the discord interview that I neglected to answer. I'd be happy to discuss it further if you wanted to ask again. Anyway, I appreciate the comment, and I'm glad you got some value from my article. Wishing you a great night! 🙏

Muchas gracias. 🙏

Yes, I also regretted that my internet failed that day and I could not enjoy the program well, I did not know if you had managed to respond, this post caught my attention because it makes me see that I should change my profile picture to give a better view to my blog, very grateful. If you can, I would like you to give me some recommendations, since at the moment my thing is not writing but if I would like to start doing it again, but my material is more audiovisual. Thanks in advance. 😁

My pleasure, I do the best I can. I'm glad you're taking some time for introspection. It's possible to succeed with variety, just keep in mind there is a balance between variety & consistency or variety & focus. :)

Poems are definitely quality content, just ask Pablo Neruda or Dr. Seuss or Rumi. All of them succeeded extremely well through poems. In fact, one of my poems was read aloud during my ruta interview. :)

Art is subjective, yes. You are correct. At the same time... the 'response' of an audience is not subjective. A desired response either exists, or it doesn't. A comedian either gets laughs from his audience or he doesn't. A singer either gets applause from her audience, or she doesn't. An author either gets sales from his book, or he doesn't. A chef either gets smiles from her diners, or she doesn't. So I encourage people to take an objective look at whether they're getting the response they're aiming for or not.

I'm so glad you're able to review yourself as a creator and aim to persuade more people to read your stuff. The world needs more people like you who are willing to be introspective, really look at themselves, and make improvements to themselves, their creations, and their presentations.

A giant hug to you from Toronto, Canada! 🙏

One thing I know for I know I have to get better for sure is taking better pictures. About time I get on it then onto see what else can be better improved on.

Cheers for the informative read.

I love when people are able to see and acknowledge a spot that could use improvement, then apply themselves to it. It always brings positive results, in my experience, so kudos to you for your approach. Thank you for the kind comment, wishing you lots of success! 🙏

I'm so glad you got some joy from my publication! And I'm happy that you care enough to improve your profile! (Many people won't bother, lol.) I really enjoyed my first bilingual interview and I appreciate you being there. I wrote about subjectivity in my reply to zullyscott above, but I'm glad you know these tips help. :) Cheers to you and wishing you a great day! 🙏

I am thankful to have come across this content, as it is my first day here. Your pieces of advice are noted well, Sir. :)

Oh, really! Thank you so much! I have just posted my introduction post (if you are just interested to read it hehe), and I definitely checking this one you recommended! Thanks a lot! You are the very first one to welcome me here, aside from Zelly. ❤️

My pleasure, and sure, happy to welcome you to Hive, and to check out your post. 🙏

¡Gracias a ti también! 🙏

Wishing you success with all 5 points, or whichever ones you choose. ;)

Thank you too! 🙏

Of course, from today I will be very attentive to the 5 points that you have recommended to me. Nice to meet a YodaHive on my way.

Wonderful! And I'm honored to be called a YodaHive , lol, thank you! :) Greetings and may the force be with you too! 🙏

Sometimes all these tips fail when every whale and curator has his own beautiful white list? His group of friends and acquaintances. Unfortunately, this is my opinion. (I think I said too much🤫)

These tips don't 'guarantee earnings' the same way picking up a basketball and heading to the gym for practice doesn't 'guarantee winning basketball games', true... but if we want success in either area, they're tips worth applying. But everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I encourage you to do whatever feels best to you. Thanks so much for commenting! 🙏

Hi, I'm stalking your posts (🤭) I came across this very interesting post, especially for those of us who are new to Hive. I completely agree on the 5 details you described, in fact this is part or fundamental to create a personal brand. For my part, I think I'm going slow, I don't get many followers, I'm believing it's because of my little interaction, however I also feel that my publications have been successful (in the relativity of success) hahaha. In my particular case I think it would be good to define a graphic identity and support me in a good content plan (since I usually talk about many things) to maintain some consistency in the communities that interest me. Also, I'm still in the process of thoroughly understanding the hive blockchain, so maybe that will help me a lot, when I have all the knowledge in my mind! Although I know more about conventional social networks, I think that here you also need a bit of luck, or a good understanding of how to get the attention of great curators (?)

I appreciate your content!

Hola!

Aprecio tu contenido!

I'm honored you're stalking my posts, thank you. A lot of my content is aimed at new hivers because technically, I am one too, lol. :) You're right, these are all parts of a personal brand, and good for you for assessing your self and your progress and feeling successful so far. Yes, supporting a consistent, focused content plan or niche is very wise. (I should probably do more of that myself, lol.) My articles on blockchain basics as well as blockchain terminiology may help further your understanding, if you're interested, and I've also written about how to get attention on our writing here and here. I appreciate your comments! 🙏

¡#KeepRyzing ! 🙏

Hey! This is great!

I haven't revamped my profile EVER. Totally forgot about it, lol.

(...asks himself why?)

It's a weird thing. I work to see a client's value in the real world and I can come up with a million ways to sell it - but when it comes to marketing myself or niching down - I have a hard time.

That's something I'm working on with my business too. So, we'll see how far I make it with all this in the next year. Thanks for the reminder about doing it on Hive!

P.S. When I work with a client on an email project, one of the first things I try to find out is their what their sender name and avatar look like, as well as if we can add a personal email signature (if there isn't one). These simple things can massively increase open & response rates... so why wouldn't I do it on my Hive profile!

(Weird... weird... weird...)

HAHA...

I'm glad you found value in the post. And it's all good, lots of mechanics neglect their own car. Lots of doctors neglect their own health. It's not ideal, but it is common. And as long as you're aware and actively working on it the best ways you know how, I'd say you're on the right track.

I'm glad you do those things for your client, they can be game-changers, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your own materials too! #KeepRyzing ! 🙏
