Feeling Peaceful At The Palace.

in Drone20 days ago

Hello fellow Hiveans!

This week I went to visit another local-ish park to me- Crystal Palace is named after a massive iron framed building that once stood to the north overlooking the once manicured lands below. It had 293,000 individual panes of glass and measured 1848ft long by 454ft wide..or about 563m by 138m!

It was originally built in Hyde Park to house 'The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations' which was celebrated on a global scale in 1851 and was organised by Prince Albert and other prominent figures at the time.

Once the event had finished, it fell out of favour but luckily, it was bought by local businessmen and they had it rebuilt in south London in 1854. Unfortunately it was destroyed by a huge fire in 1936- a faint glow was spotted in the women's cloakroom that was rapidly accelerated by timber floors. If it had survived until this day, it would likely be a prominent feature of a panorama of south London as it was 990,000sq/ft in floor space and had a 128ft high ceiling!

There are a lot of unique features to this ancient land: at the centre is a huge sports complex built for the 1964, a 1850's sculptured dinosaur park set around one of the lakes and a unique stage used for hosting live events to name a few.

The first shot shows the area where the palace stood- the level where the antenna is. Grand stone staircases and a few ornate details are now all that remains.

The next few images are of a very photogenic tower block that is currently unoccupied and the national sports centre.

It is a really fascinating place to walk around and take in all the history since it has largely remained unchanged from the park first opened!

Until the next time!
