Djerba - An Island of Street Art - Part 4

in StreetArt6 days ago

Djerba island is a island which sits of the coast of Tunisia, Djerbahood is a neighbourhood on the island which is famous for it's street art, I've written about it three previous times, and in this fourth istallment we look at the last of the photos I took there, and round out the visit. I have tried to roughly group the art on collections with a coherent theme. This time - People

This was probably my favourite pieve in the whole of the Djerbahood, it was so striking from a distance, maybe it was the starkness of the bacl on the white wall, the way it interpalayed with the decoration, or maybe it was the thought of people constantly walking in circles with no real escape.

Then of course it got even better up close - the realisation of the differences in figures, the weirdly long fingers on some making me think they might be zombies of some sort.

In a similar vein is this piece also straying away from 'traditional' street art of graffiti into a more sophisticated world. Could easily be in a gallery somewhere rather than in the back streets of a town in Tunisia.

Speaking of looking like classic art, these three pieces has both a Palm Spring as well as Jeffrey Smart vibe to me, I mean I really really liked these, I feel like they could be cover art for a novel about the fruitily of excess or maybe a murder mystery set in a 70's country club

This was more what I was thinking I would see when I realised there was a street art town in Tunisia, I must admit I thought it was going to be a little bit 'the local government paints four or five murals of local traders' but this was so much more than that, it was one of the highlight of our visit to Tunisia, which had many many highlights by the way

If you have ever even vaguely thought about visiting Tunisia I would highly recommend that you do, the breadth of experiences possible is amazing, it a fantastic mixture of history, people, nature and in the Djerbahood truly world class contemporary art free for all to see if you wander around the streets.
