👋🏽 Hello, community! Em here. Today I bring you my latest read, and I've tried to give my opinion on this book in as general a way as possible. I think it's best to dive into this story without knowing too much about it, so you can be surprised as the plot unfolds.
Synopsis
June and Athena have been friends since they studied at Yale. Both published their first books, but while Athena rose to stardom, June was not so lucky and did not achieve the same success. A terrible accident causes Athena's death, and June witnesses it all. In a sudden impulse, June steals Athena's latest manuscript, whose existence is unknown to the rest of the world.
June believes that Athena's latest work deserves to be published. Since she is responsible for reviewing and finishing it, she reasons that the book is also hers... right? She feels she deserves to publish it under her own name. However, suspicions begin to arise and June's success is in jeopardy. Now, she is going to find out how far she is willing to go to protect the success she always believed she deserved.

Opinion Em ✨
For me, this story felt like a satire of the publishing world, with June as an unreliable narrator. It's an emotional roller coaster; it's intense, exaggerated, sad, and can even be a little cruel. I don't know if it's meant to be a critique of the publishing world, but without a doubt, after finishing it, I found myself questioning things that I had previously taken for granted or that I hadn't been interested in enough.
June is a complex character, reading her thoughts is crazy, because you realize how insecure, self-centered, and jealous she is. There were moments when I simply couldn't believe the justifications she came up with. But the interesting thing is that, despite everything, there were certain points where I could agree with her, because she explained things that made a lot of sense.
Kuang managed to create a character who frustrated and exasperated me, but at the same time, I couldn't stop reading; I wanted to know what would happen to her. The only “but” I found was the ending. It's not that I didn't like it, but I felt it was a little “unrealistic,” or perhaps, precisely because it's something that could happen, that's what bothers me.
In conclusion, I didn't like June as a character (or as a person) at all. However, the book is good, it deals with very interesting topics, and it is highly recommended as a good read before the end of the year. Thank you for reading, Em ✨
