The Catacombs

It's the antithesis of Halloween in Australia, but with most of Hive in the north, it's hard not to get in the spirit, or start messing with spirits...

<p dir="auto"><br /><br /> <br /><br /> <br /><br /> <br /> <h1>The Catacombs <p dir="auto">'Pass me the fucking light' he hissed, tapping on the soles of her boots, hard. She ignored him and scuffled forward, gollum like, on her belly. She heard a crackle of stones loosen from the roof of the tunnel - nothing to worry about, just the earth letting them know it was here too, and not merely an inanimate thing to be trifled with. The torch threw a pale blue saber of light ahead of them, and worried softly at the distance blackness. She moved further forward, away from his insistant tapping, shifting her right knee forward and pressing it hard onto the tunnel floor to propel herself forward. She was glad she bought knee pads and gloves - last time they explored the catacombs, both palms and the inner side of her knees were wet with blood. She could hear drips of water in the distance, suspecting they would arrive at a larger cave in moments, likely pooling with water as many were. <p dir="auto"><img src="https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/riverflows/23tv641Nsk3emMAS9dpds3oGcNNq6oMCFrQ8YgcdFEc7D5BNJymsbvC7TjLeAQMVExHRa.png" alt="image.png" srcset="https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/riverflows/23tv641Nsk3emMAS9dpds3oGcNNq6oMCFrQ8YgcdFEc7D5BNJymsbvC7TjLeAQMVExHRa.png 1x, https://images.hive.blog/1536x0/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/riverflows/23tv641Nsk3emMAS9dpds3oGcNNq6oMCFrQ8YgcdFEc7D5BNJymsbvC7TjLeAQMVExHRa.png 2x" /><br /> Image via Unsplash <p dir="auto">'Jess, I'm fucking serious, pass me the goddamn light'. She hated him like this, and wished she had decided to do the east passage with Milo instead of Raphaël, but she was meant to marry the guy so what was she to say? Tell him that she hated exploring the underworld with him, because he made everything more tense than it was already, down there with the rats and ghosts? Other catophiles were less anxious. You couldn't afford to lose your shit down here, but Raphaël did, just as he did on the surface. It never simply forecast <em>rain, in his world, but deluge. <p dir="auto">Still, she remembered the time they had thought they were lost inside the endless tombs, and trembling with fear, finally found the exit point and burst coughing into the luminous Parisian night, alit with a full moon that reassured them that the world had not ended after all, and they were blissfully alive. He had hooted, lifting her high, brought her down and dipped her toward the cold cobblestones in a hilarious tango. They had spent three days in bed, kissing elbows, ears, hips and toes in celebration, vowing to never descend to the upside down dark world of the catacombs again. Both had heard disembodied voices, calling them in the wrong direction, echoing from the damp walls. <p dir="auto">Yet relationships dull with time, and thrills are sought in dark places. Besides, the illegality of the past time coupled camerderie of the secret club of underground explorers was compelling. Before long they were thumbing old maps, investigating rumours of unexplored tunnels, and braving the darkness so that the day became more golden, more lit, more beautiful in contrast. Raph became more animated, her own ennui evaporated. They loved the underground gatherings far from conventional gazes, the art emblazoning walls and picked out in candlelight, the hidden dinner parties and dancehalls. They loved finding new places in the maze of this upside down world, sliding, wading and crawling to find them. Even the ossuaries were lovely in their way, the beautiful architecture of bones. Still, sometimes in the tombs she wished he wasn't there, especially when he endangered them like lost the map or forgot his torch. People disappeared down here, awash in silence and murk as the city of light above dined, partied, danced and sung. <p dir="auto">'Jess, I'm serious. There's someone behind me. Please. The torch.' It was not unusual to be so unnerved in a place that housed millions of the cities dead from centuries past, but his voice was odd, as if echoing around his skull before being born as a frightened thing. She rolled on her back to glare at him, or later, she would try to think more kindly of herself and think she was about to reassure him. <p dir="auto">There was a sudden whoosh and scrape as he slid backwards, fast, as if someone was pulling, hard, bony hands around booted ankles. The torchlight thrust and sliced into the space where he had been, and was no longer, futile. <p dir="auto">'Raph?' she hesitated. 'Raphael?'. <p dir="auto">Later she would imagine she had willed him away in the catacombs, the ghosts of the malingering dead obliging her, absorbing his body into the cold and damp clay and foundational bedrock to warm their bones. She would make up stories to explain that night, that perhaps he had taken a wrong turn behind her, or had not come with her after all. <p dir="auto">But often, on the dark moonless nights that the dual city of living and dead offered, or on All Hallows Eve as the children called trick or treat, she could hear him calling from the secret entrances of the catacombs, asking her for the light, and her scrambling forward, ever forward, away from him. <p dir="auto"><center> <h1><code>With Love, <p dir="auto"><img src="https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/riverflows/23t6xT1abr5kFMeEirKwZ2QqT6MK9U4SBpKCQZAjVEojgm7uSSGL9AJSuwtBsUmMAV5jv.png" alt="image.png" srcset="https://images.hive.blog/768x0/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/riverflows/23t6xT1abr5kFMeEirKwZ2QqT6MK9U4SBpKCQZAjVEojgm7uSSGL9AJSuwtBsUmMAV5jv.png 1x, https://images.hive.blog/1536x0/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/riverflows/23t6xT1abr5kFMeEirKwZ2QqT6MK9U4SBpKCQZAjVEojgm7uSSGL9AJSuwtBsUmMAV5jv.png 2x" /> <p dir="auto"><strong>Are you on HIVE yet? There must be 50 ways to leave your lover 😂

Great story Riverflows!

Ha good one!!! 'A ghost did it, officer' 🤪👻

OMG - I listened to this again just then. I just SAW this story play out in cinematic detail - the ambiguity of what happened to him and her running out of the catacombs, devastated - but eventually getting on a bus out of Paris with this song playing in the background, a small smile on her face... did she do it or not? How reliable is her memory? Did she just leave him to be lost in the dark? Credits roll.....

Ah, I want to rewrite this as a longer narrative now... so cool, thanks for the musical addition...

I wanted a longer narrative when I read it 🙂 all those questions come to you at the end of your story. Thankfully folks like Paul Simon and Riverflow have creative talent 😁 I just paste songs that sound right in comments lol

Thanks @arcange, I loved this one!

Glad you like it. Happy Halloween @riverflows 🎃👻

Hehe, glad you like it @riverflows 🎃

BTW, I noticed I miss your witness vote 😢
Without imposing, do you mind casting one to me? It would be much appreciated!

OH yeah no worries, of course I can!!! I don't know why I haven't already - hmmm, my bad!

Edit - darling are you sure @arcange ? Coz there's a big blue tick next to your name so I definitely have been voting for you for a while?

Weird. I did check again and now see your vote. Thank you for your support ❤️

Damn... You're good.

Huh...there's just something so eerie, so vague and mysterious about this particular story, that makes me think it could fit well as some type of classic Halloween Tale to tell around campfires. I don't know... That's the vibe I get from it I guess.

Goddamn though, Poor Raph😂! Dude only wanted his freaking flashlight but Jess kept zoning out XD

That ending though, something ain't right with that girl tbh 👀... Good choice of music btw! Really sets the mood for the story.

Now to more pressing matters:

kissing elbows

Kissing what? °_°... Please tell me that's an expression and not some normal thing couples usually do?

°_°

I don't think she zoned out - thoughts happen in seconds, and she was more just pissed off as she moved along the tunnel, annoyed at him because he should have bought his own torch.

Haha yes all parts of the body are kissable and should be kissed, especially when lovers first explore each other!!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Ohh... I see. She still ain't right though lol.

all parts of the body are kissable

Wait, even the👀... Actually forget it, I already got my answer for that.

And but of course, it was brilliant as always!

💚

Haha it depends if the 👀 are attached 👻😂

That is nuts🤣!

But in theory, makes a lot of sense.

Wow. Was not expecting the ending to this story. A nice surprise it was, and it's very relatable how Jess retells how everything happened in her head, because often people try to tell themselves and others things played out in a different tone than what really happened....

Nice story!

Thanks! Yeh I think she felt guilty so would like to remember it any other way.

Like earthworms, wriggling their way through the dark. Who knew they owned the technology of torchlight. You are, undoubtably, brilliant

The torch threw a pale blue saber of light ahead of them, and worried softly at the distance blackness.

In the past, you did a similar favour for me🤗

Aw what a lovely thing to say! You are too kind.

I love the symbolism in this story, @riverflows. The narrator faces the dilemma of whether she wants to be with this guy in life, as in the catacombs. She is betrothed, but also wants to get away from him. When some underground thing or spirit drags him away from her, both problems are solved. This is so creepy and delightful!

Thanks!! That first line where he demands the torch was the first thing that came into my head for the prompt, and I just had to see where it went! I loved exploring that dilemma of affection and irritation, how she has these beautiful memories with him but also finds him irritating. The symbolism just worked so easily - here she is physically ahead of him, moving forward, and at the same time she's symbolically leaving him behind, unwilling to assist him at all. The guilt of that must haunt her.

I loved writing this one. Heck I enjoy all the stories I write when the Ink Well prompt nudges me!

It is funny that despite of many horrow stories about some places we still will feel pulled to such places like hypnotized. Maybe this is an adrenaline shower that we want to expirience. Nicely written and very exciting.

Oh I know how bizarre, right? Like, we KNOW bad things happen in caves and tunnels but we still go! Or the horror trope of the girl going into the dark room and you just KNOW the serial killer is waiting....

Atmospheric intrigue drives this narration to elevated heights. Can she go on, on her gollum belly, or will she succumb? Will she feel the loss of her intrepid soulmate too keenly to allow further exploration, or will she, simply forge ahead. The questions posed are the real story, you are a master of the craft.

Thanks!!! The dilemma unfolded beautifully in that claustrophobic setting.

Now this is shocking 😂.

Not me screaming A lovely story @riverflows

She should have just passed the torch😭

Hahahah oh yes I think she'd think that for the rest of her life!

Great spooky tale! I love your descriptions because they're so fluid and atmospheric. The ambience feels dark and claustrophobic.

Halloween is not a thing in Australia? 🦇

Thanks so much, I always really appreciate you commenting and especially when you say nice things, I swell with pride... :)

Halloween is only a thing for people with kids and idiots who want to buy a load of plastic shit to celebrate an American tradition that has nothing to do with them and who fall for marketing consumerist bullshit and have no idea what it actually is for.

There, I said it.

It's funny, this fluidity in my writing - I think it's a kind of circular, stream of consciousness, feminine way of writing - or at least that's how I see it, as opposed to the stark masculinity of say, Hemingway or McCarthy who I admire greatly. It's just what my writing evolved to be and I try to get to the source of WHY i write in this style. It's just me I suppose.

who fall for marketing consumerist bullshit and have no idea what it actually is for.

Heh. So tell me how you really feel.

It's just what my writing evolved to be and I try to get to the source of WHY i write in this style. It's just me I suppose.

It helps that you write with detailed descriptions in your other non-fiction posts. So there must be some sort of cross-pollination, in a manner of speaking.

Oh yes, I guess there is. And there's always something autobiographical in my own work - here is the simple irritation of me as a wife when Jamie's insistant at something when I'm busy, damn it, and his catastrophising when he's stressed which stresses me out - but also, him kissing my elbows when we first made love. The rest is fiction - I've never ever been to Paris. So yes, there's a crossover, always.

There is no need to search in Unsplash for pictures, you can always ask from me :)

Woa! This is freaking cool man!

Thanks!
The truth is that I don't see often something like that!
If you like you can see more of it here: https://peakd.com/hive-102880/@fotostef/would-you-visit-this-chapel

Amazing... Paris or another ossuary?

It is the Chapel of Bones, or Capela dos Ossos, in the Portuguese city of Évora.

I have posted about it both in color and in b&w :)

Tres cool. I've been to one In poland before... that was pretty cool!

There is something that makes this so vivid and rich. Wait, that’s you. You did it. I’m not sure I have the right word but many elements you put in this makes it a best seller. Well done.

She stopped wanting him so problem solved.

I know right, but she probably regretted it. You know when you ditch someone and you miss them because you just focus on the good memories? Thanks heaps!

I would regret if I were in her place. It is no wonder the nightmares.
