The Cookout Goodies

Sunday I posted about the Father's Day cookout we had planned. Well, I closed with a promise to share the results of my grilling skills. Although the actual final result didn't get a photo, my son did capture some in progress shots.

Below are the steak pinwheels the wife prepared that earlier that morning. She took thin sliced sirloin steak and wrapped slices of provolone cheese, fresh spinach, and sprinkles of olive oil and hamburger seasoning. We let them sit in the refrigerator until that evening.

The shot below, is the PitBoss Large Sarge turning the pinwheels and checking the miniature potatoes. I cooked the pinwheels at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 7 minutes each side, until the center reached about 128 degrees. The minature potatoes were cooked for about 25-30 minutes.

Below is everything in the pellet side of the grill at the same time. The miniature potatoes, steak pinwheels, and bacon wrapped pork tenderloin.

It was a learning experience as I haven't grilled much beyond hamburgers and hotdogs before on a regular round Webber charcoal grill. I learned I needed to cook the potatoes a little hotter than I did and a little longer. They were still a little harder than we typically like, but still good.

Another thing I have to figure out for the future is how to keep the meat from sticking so much to the grill. I did spray it down with non-stick cooking spray beforehand, but it didn't seem to help much.

You probably have to condition the grill like a new frying pan with more oil or just using it more.

Nice work Pit Boss!

Thanks Zeke! I was thinking you are probably right about the using it more. Because I followed all the instructions for preparing it for use to the letter. It could be I need to use more cooking spray on the grill though too.

Hello Joe, This looks like the beginnings ow what would have been a nice meal. Too bad about the potatoes, but I see you've been given a tip in the comments section so I'm sure it'll all come out beautifully next time.

Thanks. It was a very nice meal. We really enjoyed it. The potatoes still weren't too bad. Yes, galenkp gave me a good tip on preparing them next time.

You made some good stuff! I'm trying out a new smoker, we'll see how that goes.

Thanks. New smoker. please share the goods when you do.

I just need some time back home to use it! My day job now is all contract work which keeps me away from home most of the time.

That stinks, but understand one has to do what you have to do.

I'm not ready to retire, I think I'd get bored!

I can't help you with the cooking methods on the Pit Boss...but I could help with the eating of things cooked on the Pit Boss.

I think it's all trial and error mate, you'll get there evetually and along the way get to eat a lot of stuff that was almost right. It's good to see you're giving it a workout though.

I plan to enjoy the hell out of this thing and sure experimenting will be a big part of it. Of course I will need a beer or two to go along with the experiment. Every experiment needs a brew for an ingredient.🤣 I see this being my plaything this summer when the weather allows. And G-Dog is more than welcome to come on over for a bite and brew.

I'll store that invite away and pull it out at the right moment! 😉

Sounds good.

Looks good. I have never done potatoes on a grill but would give it a bash!

Hell, I hadn't either until these😀. I would give it a whirl and experiment some. If it doesn't work out, feed it to the kids🤣

It's probably more palatable than what they feed me! 🤣🤣

I always cook mine in the microwave first, toss them in olive oil, rock salt and ground pepper (or other spices as is relevant). It means there's no potential for hard innards, one can cook them nice and fast and they crisp up on the outside perfectly. Just saying for when you cook potatoes on a grill.

Thanks for the tip. I will keep this one in mind next time. That is exactly the issue I had. The innards were still a little hard and the spices just didn't take as well either.

No worries. It's easier to do it this way and means the spuds are ready at the same time as everything else. 👍
