Hive: Monthly Distribution Report Through 8/31/2020 (Everyone Up But Orcas)

in LeoFinance4 years ago

For about two years, I did a monthly report on Steem called "STEEM: Whales Are Losing Their Power....The System Is Not Broken". This took a look at how the distribution of Steem Power changed on a monthly basis. The presumption on there was that the Whales were just getting more powerful when the reality showed the exact opposite. When it came to Steem Power, over a two years period of time, things were flattening out.

Of course, we know that Steemit Inc selling part of the stake each month had a lot to do with it. Unfortunately, as we found out, not enough was sold.

I decided to bring this report over to Hive so that we can monitor how things are going. I am going to use the first chart I have from Steem as the initial basis since Hive has its roots there. The chart is pertinent for all categories other than the Whales since we know that is much different than on Hive due to Steemit Inc.

These are the numbers through August 31, 2020.

Each month I monitor what is going on with new accounts and the amount of MVests in each category. I do this to determine what trends are taking place.

Now that we are at end of month, time to post the numbers again.

I want to thank @arcange for the work done each day compiling these numbers and making the charts.

We will be showing 3 months worth of data for analysis purposes to see how the 90 trend might be.

The first chart is from August of 2017, the month I started on Steem. It is placed here to provide some contrast to see how things are changing over a longer period of time.

Here is the breakdown.

6/30/2020

7/31/2020

8/31/2020

This month was fairly interesting. As a percentage of the whole, the smaller accounts were able to gain. The Red Fish, Minnows, and Dolphins were able to grow with the Minnows up the largest percentage (1.53%). The Whales also saw a gain.

The big loser this month was the Orcas. They were the only category that was down, registering over a percent loss (1.04%). This is the second month in a row the Orcas fell negative.

It was good to see the lower categories register growth even though the overall HP. This is not completely surprising with other options available for using HIVE. Thus, people might not be powering up as much as they use to in the past since they can go other directions at the moment.

On June 30, 2020, the Whales and Orcas had 173,858 MVests (65.45% of the total), a decrease of .47%; on July 31, 2020, 174,163 MVests (65.64% of the total), an increase of .29%; on August 31, 2020, 172,279 MVests (65.48% of the total).

Powering up is important for a variety of reasons. To start, it does affect voting power which influences the reward pool. Secondly, governance is driven by the amount of HP an account has. Thus, voting on Witnesses and Proposals is affected by the amount of powering up one does.

As we can see, with the total amount of MVests powered up declining, those who hold steady or add to their positions are gaining in influence.

This month the three lower categories fared very well as a unit.

Seems as if the dolphins didn't really gain much but then I feel Just a few people I know see unlocking dolphin status.
Well these stats somehow gives people the Idea of user's behaviour on hive and infact it's important we see the essence not powering up.
I hope More dolphins and minnows to decide who influences the approval of fundings to project in the Dao.

Yes and that is done through powering up. It is good to see the power up days, it is a nice symbol and keep attention on the importance of governance.

I would love to see the minnows and dolphins explode. Sadly, there does not seem to be a lot of newer people coming in and working their way through the ranks. To achieve Minnow now requires only about $160 which is not a ton of money in the US or Western Europe.

Yet for year we see the same thing, people not inclined to buy in with Hive. Thus we keep going the slow path.

$160 is quite affordable in countries like the US and at the end it all boils down to people see a reason to grow through the ranks and make a statement for themselves.

Yet for year we see the same thing, people not inclined to buy in with Hive. Thus we keep going the slow path.

Hopefully time will change all this. Enjoying your contents once again.

Interesting analysis here Taskmaster. I sure know my Hive count has been increasing over time, and I've been converting all my HBD's to Hive with each drop in Hive price. I will be powering up in bits but at the moment I'm trying to catch high waves since I've been accumulating at $0.22 levels.

When bitcoin dumps it seems to affect most coins including Hive, but when it goes up, it hardly affects Hive. This is not the decoupling I was looking towards to lol...

There certainly are some people who are trading and growing their accounts too. Nothing wrong with that. Plus a lot are making some money off the layer 2 apps which is filling their bags albeit not in HIVE. This is great too.

Overall, the wealth is growing with people finding different niches they like and are drawn to.

However, we must not overlook the importance of HP and using it for governance.

Well said, thats definitely on my mind as well.

Slow and steady will win the race. Would rather see stable gains in the ecosystem as opposed to a parabolic move. Stable gains sustain. Thanks for the info.
