This holiday felt special because our family decided to go on holiday to Bengkulu, an area rich in history, culture, and natural beauty that is still preserved. We traveled from Aceh to Bengkulu by car with a distance of almost 1,500 km. This was our long journey which was very memorable and interesting because we wanted to see one of the very rare flower species, the Rafflesia flower.
Rafflesia, is a giant flower that is famous in the world, this species is one of the natural icons of Indonesia, especially from the island of Sumatra. With a size that can reach a diameter of up to one meter and a weight of more than 10 kilograms, Rafflesia is one of the largest flowers in the world.
Rafflesia is known as a parasitic flower that grows on its host plant, especially in the genus Tetrastigma. Without leaves, stems, or roots of its own, Rafflesia relies entirely on its host for nutrition. Its life cycle is also very unique and takes months to flower, while the bloom only lasts a few days. One of the characteristics of this species is the stench it emits, similar to the smell of a corpse. This smell serves to attract insects, such as flies, which act as flower pollinators.
The interesting thing about the Rafflesia species that we encountered was because the species was the Rafflesia bengkuluensis species. The bengkuluensis species differs in its darker color compared to the Rafflesia Arnoldi species.
However, getting to the Rafflesia habitat is not easy and full of challenges. We had to enter the dense forest by walking for almost an hour. After seeing the beautiful flower, our tiredness was cured because the large flower was indeed very charming and beautiful. Although a strong stench emanated from the flower. This experience was truly memorable and unforgettable for us, besides, this was our longest journey with a family vehicle.
Hopefully this post is interesting information for readers and if you have seen it, please comment.
