A trip home away from home

in Worldmappin11 days ago (edited)

Just look at the picture here underneith of the little palapa in the sun with the sea in the background. I bet your first thought on this is 'ahhh, this has to be on some tropical island again, it looks so chill'.

Nothing about that is all true, don't always think too far away from home. This is the Dutch coastline with the beach of Scheveningen. You know Scheveningen....the city that no foreigner can pronounce .

And popping in there for a couple of hours was just beautiful!

Us Dutchies we always think that our country is gigantic when it comes to travelling through the country. From my place to the sea is somewhere in between 1.5 to 2 hours, but I hardly ever visit. Usually this is the case because when the weather is good, the whole country decides to visit the sea and it becomes a disaster getting there.

So it always feels far away. But I am sure the average America or Aussie will totally laugh at these distances as they drive this to the supermarket even on the daily.

It is a pity actually, especially when it is more quiet, the Northsea here is also super nice really.

Kurhaus

Also one of the most famous and prominent buildings of the town called the Kurhaus was not to be missed. Back in the days this used to be a bathing house and a sanatorium. Nowadays this is a hotel but the sighting of it just remains super classical.

Also from the beach you can spot the Kurhaus and I guess a lot of people who have visited Scheveningen over the years remember this building. I was just in town to grab a quick lunch, but surely all places around this are not the places to get a 'casual lunch' as everything screams tourist trap.

There was also a lot of construction going on on the promenade of the beach, hence the blue fences everywhere. I guess this has to do something with piping and keeping it all safe, but the sighting was not the most beautiful at the moment.

Who cares...there is still beach!

Gone were the days

Also everyone knows the iconic pier of Scheveningen with the ferriswheel on top of it. I remember that this was always a vibrant pier with a lot of stuff going on on there.

If you look at the pier now, it kind of feels deserted and the sight of it looks poorly maintained if you ask me. Nothing going on over there. Ofcourse they have built a bungee tower and you can also zipline over the pier. But the ferris wheel wasn't going and every shop on the pier seemed closed.

As in...It just all looked like the hightlighted days of the pier were gone and were also not coming back at all. A pity, because this really could be the beating heart of the town!

While heading back towards the train station by using a tram and also busses, again this was proven that is is zero reason to drive by car into these town. Public transport here is good and pops by every couple of minutes.

In the tram we also passed by 'het Binnenhof' which is where the Dutch ministery and the prime minister is located. I had no idea that this was so much in the middle of town! There is a lot in this country that I have no idea of, I have to admit.

So a random afternoon by the sea. Just popping in there, scoring a lunch somewhere and popping out. And still having the feeling that it was a beach day and even learning some things. Isn't that something?

Sort:

I call days like this 'molidays' - mini holidays.

Literally an afternoon break! Mini but awesome!

My gosh! 😍 It really is so chill 😌

Love the beach always. You do as well I guess at your profile pic haha

Have a !BEER on the beach!

Yesssss for sure!

(Taking the drone for a spin next week again. Looking forward to it!)

Sounds like a perfect day (or afternoon) to me! Spontaneous and even short vacations away from home many times seem somehow even more fun than the 'long planned summer vacation'. I'm glad you went and blogged about it.
