Winter Challenge : Square Dorchester in December without snow, Montreal

in Worldmappin6 days ago

I wanted to post this little walk in Square Dorchester for the #WEDNESDAYWALK but, given the low internet connection to upload the photos, I gave up 😤. Back home in Montreal, it turned out perfectly for the #WINTERCHALLENGE organised by @worldmappin.

Square Dorchester

The Square Dorchester isn't far from Saint Catherine Street in downtown Montreal. I had just finished buying the last of my Christmas presents and on my way back to the metro, I passed through this square filled with monuments and historic buildings.

Building Sun Life

We'll start our walk from rue Sainte Catherine and arrive at Square Dorchester. The emblematic building of this square is the Sun Life Building. It was built in 1913 and enlarged in the 1930s to become the tallest building in Montreal at the time (122 metres / 400 ft).

Building Sun Life

It's a shame, but Montreal was a little short of snow last Monday. All that remained were the decorations, showing that the festive season was approaching. Fortunately, just before Christmas, 10 cm (4'') of snow have fallen. A white coat is always better, even if it quickly turns grey and melting in the city.

Robert Burns

There are a number of memorials in this square, including this statue of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. This is a bronze copy by George Anderson Lawson made in 1930 and installed in Ayr in Scotland. Originally, part of Montreal's population was of Scottish origin.

Rafael Sottolichio

As is often the case in Montreal, StreetArt is everywhere. Opposite the Sun Life Building, there's this mural, Façades : Fenêtres sur ma ville (Facades: Windows on my city), in trompe-l'oeil by Rafael Sottolichio. Superb work, the building on the right looks real.

At the centre of the square is the Monument to the Heroes of the Boer War, designed by George William Hill in 1907. It is Montreal's equestrian statue. It pays tribute to the Canadian soldiers who took part in the Boer War, a part of history I know little about... Probably an idea from the British Empire.

Windsor

For my second photo of the post, I was standing exactly in front of the front door of this building called the Windsor, built in 1878, Montreal's first luxury hotel. This marked the move of Montreal's city centre from the Old Port to Dominion Square (the former name of Dorchester Square). The hotel closed its doors in 1981 to become offices. No more luxury 😀.

Another statue pays tribute to sir Wilfrid Laurier, former Prime Minister of Canada and the first French-speaking Prime Minister. It was done by the Quebec sculptor Émile Brunet and installed in 1953 on the Place.

We cross Boulevard René Levesque to reach the second part of the square, called Place du Canada, which also has festive decorations but no snow. Normally, in this plinth, there is a statue of John A. Macdonald, a figure not much liked in Montreal because of his assimilationist policy towards Aboriginal Canadians and his racist views towards Asian immigrants. The statue has been vandalised several times and was removed in 2020. I don't know if it will be replaced. This soap opera was widely followed for a few months before being forgotten.

The last monument is the monument to the braves of Montreal, a replica of the Whitehall cenotaph in London. A ceremony is often held on 11 November to pay tribute to the Canadian soldiers who died in the two World Wars and the Korean War.

We end our walk with this moose and its family (see the first photo), much better than the cannon near the monument. I hope you enjoyed this walk through downtown Montreal with me. Have a wonderful holiday season.

Love the Mooses! very cool. We are still looking for our first moose in Vermont. I have told my wife we just need to start taking pictures of all the sculptures and signs of moose but she is determined they don't count lol

the Boer War

Nasty bit of work that one. I have an interest in Churchill and he was involved as a war correspondent.

Are there mooses in Vermont? I've only seen one from a distance in Gaspésie, and once, quite close up, its head was hanging out of the boot of a pickup truck in front of me on the road 😀 Does it count?

I'm going to read a bit about the reasons for this war, but given the times and the opponents, it can't have been pretty, as you say.

Have a great weeekend

There are mooses if you get up in the mountains and away from the people. I've actually seeen moose in New Hampshire haha
