It's Friday, which means it's time for a spook-tacular new Zap fiction challenge. With Halloween on the horizon, we thought a ghostly tale would be perfect this week.

Here's the prompt:

You are a lonely ghost who longs to be part of the human world. However, every time you go outside, you accidentally scare people away with your supernatural appearance. The one night a year you can walk freely amongst humans and talk to them without fright is Halloween.

Your challenge is to tell the story of this ghost as they get ready for and experience a long-awaited Halloween night out. What thoughts fill their head as they prepare? Who do they meet and what conversations unfold? How does it feel to finally blend in? Unleash your imagination however you'd like!

You have until next Thursday evening to post your ghoulish ghost stories on DBuzz. One mysteriously marvelous writer will be selected as the winner and featured beneficiary of next Friday's post!

We just wanted to take a moment to clarify what "zap fiction" means in our weekly challenges. Zap fiction refers to ultra-short stories contained within 280 characters – the maximum character limit for a DBuzz post.

So for the contest, your goal is to craft a complete microtale within a single 280-character buzz. You can optionally continue the story in additional posts or comments, but we will be judging based on that first 280-character submission.

Make sure to post your Zap fiction entry on DBuzz itself, rather than just in the comments here. You need to link to the URL of your buzz post on DBuzz containing the 280-character story as a comment under this post for it to qualify. :D

Objective of this game

This writing challenge will be no easy feat – the objective is to write a Zap fiction short story of something that is truly the embodiment of what's proposed. This means you'll need to go above and beyond the ordinary, and push the boundaries of creativity to craft the perfect story.

Whether it's an epic tale of the future or a gripping narrative full of twists and turns, you'll need to think beyond the usual conventions and stretch your imagination to the limits. With a little bit of patience and a lot of determination, you're sure to come out with a truly impressive work of fiction representing what's being suggested. Rules and conditions of victory

• You must publish the post on DBuzz (a Hive frontend where you can log in with your posting key or Hive Keychain). Adding a photo or image is optional.
• Always do your best to make the post in the most attractive way possible, as creativity will be valued!
