The blowpipe or Mantis:It is a medium-sized insect of approximately 6 to 7 cm, with a long thorax and slender antennae. It has two large compound eyes and three small simple eyes between them. The head can rotate up to 180º. Its forelegs, which it keeps tucked in front of its head, are equipped with spines to grasp prey.

They are solitary animals except during the breeding season, when male and female seek each other out to mate. When there is more than one male near a female, they fight and only one mates. Females are larger than males. On most occasions, during or after mating, the female eats the male.

They can be green or brown with different shades. The color of the adult is determined by the environment in which it inhabits during its last molt (e.g. yellow, if it is dry straw, or green, if it is fresh grass).[citation needed].

It is the only animal known to have a single ear, which is located on the thorax.
