Gardening has become an addiction

And winter makes me more eager

Garden Mania.png

The more chilled the weather gets, the more eager I am to plant as much as possible, because I know, this is not going to last long. Our Winters used to start in late September and stay until late February, but unfortunately with the impact of global warming and pollution on climate, it's now barely a little over a month, starting December and continuing till late January. So that gives a 50 days window and a plant needs at least a month to grow and flower - you can't do much magic on that.

So with all the eagerness making me more anxious, I decided to plant some inca on the open spaces that we have and visited the nursery. Before visiting I gave a call to the Supervisor to save my time, and he confirmed that inca saplings are available. But unfortunately when I reached there, the saplings were so small that, it was difficult to hold them even. It looked like the supervisor did not verify with ground staffs, and I requested to not do this in future, because it takes half of my day, forget the fuel cost. Of late, I am trying to accept the fact that most people are casual, and I have to be very specific asking them again and again, and still be prepared to accept ground realities. And because of high demand, they have increased the price of these saplings - 8₹ per plant however small it might be. When the season started, they were being sold at 3₹, so that indicates there are still many garden lovers exhausting their capacity. Unless you have prepared very good loose soil, survival of very small plants is bleak, wasting all the money and effort.

And since this is a govt nursery, they prepare a lot of pots to beautify places as ordered. You can see the huge area they have in the heart of city - only because it's a forest department affair. Selling saplings is small business for them - so they don't care if you buy or not. However I still go to this place first, because their quality is good. And since I wanted to bring them on that day, I decided to take a little more pain going to another private nursery, but I did not want to come empty handed, so decided to buy few white inca saplings, costing 25₹ each (That's a lot, but we usually don't get white inca saplings, so thought to try this season) - gardening is always an experiment.

This private nursery is very small compared to the previous one, but they had better saplings at 5₹, straight 37% savings, realizing my fuel cost.

I brought 60 saplings, and out of that, there were still few very small ones, which we still planted with hope. They won't give you only the big ones.

These little ones will take one more week to mature. Some more photographs from this place :

Heavily fed with chemical fertilizers, these plants will not survive for a long time, but winter is a big business for them. These are brought from Kolkata and sold here.

So with this, we have covered the inner empty circle and a long patch, that was made ready beforehand. This is going to be my last purchase of saplings from the nursery for this season. And to prevent people step on these small saplings, I had to put some markers - nobody cares how they grow, all they are interested is to take flowers, which hurts me a lot. Unless you plant a tree, you won't understand the sentiment and feelings of a gardener.

DSC05623.JPG

Looked around for sticks, and thankfully a carpenter was working on our premises for someone and I collected these left over materials to mark the area to prevent over stepping. A lot of care is needed from here, and feels like I have become the official part time gardener of our society, but no guilt doing a good job. Someone asked me there are 100 flats in our society, making close to 500 people living in the society, why I alone am behind the garden - and my answer was simple - probably it's a gift given by the almighty to very few ? They all love to come here, spend some time to see and feel it, take selfies here, bees are also here now, what else I need....People spend a lot of money and effort for what they like - the goal of everything that we do is Happiness, so I would continue to do what gives me inner happiness.

Before I wind up this post, some more photos from my garden -

Because of scarcity of time, I was spraying some medicines on these plants in late evening and a kid thought there is a ghost in the garden - it was so much fun.

Starts as yellow and ends up being red - nature is amazing. I am going to collect the seed of this one this year. Few more macros of natural colors :

Think this is the end of this season ? The very next day, another idea popped in my mind for the garden, fueling another concept, more to come on that.....gardening never ends.

Yes, since Odisha is below Tropic of Cancer, and that too a costal state we have a short winter in general, but anthropogenic causes has made it further short and skew.

but I did not want to come empty handed, so decided to buy few white inca saplings, costing 25₹ each

Opps, that's too much. Very very high, literally loot.

Only a gardener can understand what it takes to grow them. I can understand your feelings. I think you are a bit late Sir, at least 2 weeks late to grow these. Because after "Makar Sankranti", cold wave will fade away here.

why I alone am behind the garden - and my answer was simple - probably it's a gift given by the almighty to very few

Gardening does fulfill physiological needs. Many are living a synthetic lifestyle, or profit oriented time investment. Gardening has always been my pastime from get-go. I Can understand you sentiment around gardening.

I love the shots of flowers, they are quite fulfilling and appealing to eyes.

Thank you.

I think you are a bit late Sir, at least 2 weeks late to grow these.

Yes, this year I am late because initially the society was not sure, if they would take the road at that place or not. Still I took the risk, but once I started, I felt like doing more and I even put some seeds myself to grow saplings - more to come on that. I know, the winter is not going to stay long, but this is an experiment to see, if we can still grow till February - its all fun and experiment.

yeah sure, let's see, this weather is also quite erratic.

Waooo!!! A show of colors for plant lovers 🪴 @sanjeevm mother of mine 🫣😱.

All this garden or nursery is own personal ?? What a lot of flowers 🌺 beautiful friend !!!!
A privilege to have such a nice place to recreate.

You know I have a store here in cuba 🇨🇺, if you lived nearby is a lot I would sell you plants bro. The nurseries here don't feature so many fancy flowers, mostly it has the same. Palms 🌴, para de elefante, begonias and some vicarias.

I will mention my plant friend 🪴@nikv will also enjoy your post very much.

Thank you so much, it is exciting to work to see these beautiful flowers.

Yes, it is, especially when the colors become even more vivid when the sun's rays fall on them .
All garden is like paradise :)) 🤠🤠

Global warming has disrupted the balance of nature. It has made life and nature more problematic.

The state nursery looks very organized and impressive. The colorful flowers in your garden are also beautiful.

People can step on the plants in the garden without caring. However, if they knew the difficult conditions in which they were grown, they would be more careful.

Wow... Several types of flowering plants are very beautiful in my friend's eyes, from nursery to these babies are starting to show beautiful and amazing flowers, really cool and charming 😍😍

Wow, that's crazy that your seasons have been shortened so much. We are just getting into winter here and I expect we have quite a few snowy days ahead of us before we can start thinking about planting things!

When I was a kid, the winter would stay for more than 4 months - a perfect winter. Planning to plant some trees this time ? Do share with us.

Yeah, I guess ours used to be longer too. I don't know if I am going to plant any trees. I want to, but I also think we are going to be moving in a few years, so why bother right?

Well few years is a lot of time, I would enjoy the flowers till then.

This is a beautiful read. I enjoyed viewing the picture gallery, you have such a lovely garden, all the flowers 🌺 are appealing to the eyes.

Wow
I love the way your garden is filled with beautiful flowers
Good job. I’m renting an apartment soon and I’d love to have a garden

You are right; due to the effects of global warming and climate pollution, we have to face a lot of problems nowadays. This causes a lot of difficulties for farmers and gardeners. This government garden looks very beautiful; I like this work very much. All the flowers and plants are very beautiful. Thank you. 🙏

Those red flowers, I really low them! Not sure how hard is to take care of it

This is easy to grow, and does not need any special care.

Good afternoon dear friend @sanjeevm

How great to have this government nursery where you can compare excellent things with significant savings, in addition to all the variety of beautiful plants that are there

You have made an excellent purchase, I hope that all the seedlings prosper and fill the space of the circle very well with beautiful plants

You are doing a great job in your garden

The flower going from orange to red is so beautiful. Very cool to see the transition.

My mother has the same purple flowers as in this post every summer in our garden.

You have a very nice garden! Your passion for gardening shines through in every word and photo 😁

Yes, I would love to grow my own vegetables in future.

The way you have colorful flowers on your garden is really cute. I’m hoping to have my mini garden very soon

OMG!
I really love and admire how expansive your garden is looking.
Also, the flowers left me speechless with their dazzling beauty. Good job my friend.

The change in weather has made gardening very challenging, the nursery is very large and has many species of plants. The supervisor should be more responsible because the nursery is being criticized for that. You have bought a lot of seedlings. Your garden is also very big. The flowers are beautiful and big. You are a successful gardener. This is a great post and encourages gardening.
