Autumn Colours

I went to town today and saw beautiful autumn colours in the trees. My house is high up in the mountains, so when I go down near the ocean, I notice that things are a bit different from the mountain area, especially the colours of the trees, plants, and flowers. Downtown temperatures are at least 2-3 degrees warmer than near my house. The warmer weather seems to make the autumn colours appear faster. There are also various types of fruits and flowers in town because people have planted them, while near my house, there are more wild plants. I saw vivid, colourful plants in the trees. They are red, purple, yellow, and brown.

There was an old, mature acorn tree on the property of a post office. The tree had many acorns, which were still green, but they looked heavy. I don't collect acorns for flour, but if I needed to, I would definitely come here to gather some and make my own acorn flour.

I also noticed some pretty pepper vines. They seemed like decorative plants, but I learned they can be used to make medicinal liquor. In my hometown, there are wild grapes in the mountains that are similar in size to these grapes, though they aren’t as colourful. They are just purple. I used to make jam from wild grapes when I found them.

The rowan berries, which are my favourite autumn fruit, also caught my eye. I don’t think we can eat them, though, because of their name in Japanese 'nana kamado "Nana" means seven, and "kamado" means oven. The name suggests that these fruits are so hard, they won’t burn even if you put them in the oven seven times!

However, birds seem to enjoy eating them. I was amazed by the strength of their beaks. I’ve heard some people make liquor from nanakamado berries. I’ve never tried it, but it's said to be fruity with a slightly bitter taste. Although I don’t drink alcohol anymore, I wish I could have tasted it once.

The sun was shining on the nanakamado tree and its fruits, and I captured the beautiful moment in these photos.
