[ENG-SPN] From Monsacro to the Magic Square: Mysteries of the Kingdom of Silo/ Del Monsacro al Cuadrado Mágico: Misterios del Reino de Silo

Silo was certainly not one of the most beloved figures among the early kings of the Asturian dynasty, which began with this true enigma. A survivor of the disastrous battle fought on the banks of the Guadalete River, whose waters were practically stained red with the blood of the Visigothic army's elite—a similar event occurred centuries later with Charlemagne and his army at the Ibañeta pass—he was also the one who safeguarded important sacred relics, rescued from the mystical city of Toledo, hiding them in the misty peaks of a sacred mountain near the town of Morcín, Monsacro, before it was stormed by the fervent armies of the Muslim leaders, Musa and Tariq: Don Pelayo.

But although Silo was not known, like his predecessors, as a combative king quick to wield the sword, he was nevertheless distinguished by his love of pacifism and the arts, retiring to the beautiful Asturian town of Pravia, where he left as a legacy for posterity one of the most outstanding examples of Asturian Pre-Romanesque art: the church of Santianes de Pravia.

Dedicated to the figure of that divergent Evangelist, John, who spent his last days in exile on the beautiful island of Patmos, where he undertook the task of writing one of the most enigmatic texts of all time, the Book of Revelation, the church—though much affected and reformed throughout different historical periods and situated at the foot of the main road, which, like a metaphorical river afflicted with aluminosis, winds its way melancholically into the town—is also the site of one of the so-called "magic squares." These squares, when viewed from any angle, repeat a quote whose mystery, however, constitutes a testament to the creativity of the anonymous master stonemason who designed it, elevating it above the landscape: "Silo princeps fecit." "Prince Silo made me."

Silo no fue, sin duda, uno de los personajes relevantes más apreciados dentro del elenco de aquellos primeros reyes de la dinastía asturiana, que comenzó con ese auténtico enigma, superviviente de la desastrosa batalla librada en las márgenes del río Guadalete, cuyas aguas prácticamente se tiñeron de rojo con la sangre de la flor y nata del ejército visigodo –algunos siglos después, se produjo un caso parecido con Carlomagno y su ejército en el puerto de Ibañeta- y el mismo que puso a buen recaudo importantes reliquias sagradas, salvadas de la mística ciudad de Toledo, ocultándolas en las brumosas cimas de un monte sagrado cercano al Concejo de Morcín, el Monsacro, antes de esta fuera tomada al asalto por las enfervorecidas huestes de los caudillos musulmanes, Muza y Tariq: Don Pelayo.

Pero, aunque Silo no destacó, como sus antecesores, por ser un rey combativo y presto para empuñar la espada, sí lo hizo, no obstante, por su afición al pacifismo y las Artes, retirándose a la hermosa localidad asturiana de Pravia, donde dejó, como legado para la posteridad, uno de los más sobresalientes templos del denominado Arte o Prerrománico Asturiano: la iglesia de Santianes de Pravia.

Dedicada a la figura de ese Evangelista divergente, Juan, que pasó sus últimos días exiliado en la hermosa isla de Patmos, donde emprendió la tarea de escribir uno de los textos más herméticos de todos los tiempos, como es el Apocalipsis, la iglesia, si bien muy afectada y reformada a lo largo de diferentes periodos históricos y situada al pie de la carretera general, que, como un metafórico río afectado de aluminosis se adentra con melancólica parsimonia en el pueblo, es también, el continente donde se localiza uno de los denominados ‘cuadrados mágicos’, que repiten, leída desde cualquier posición, una cita, cuyo misterio, sin embargo, constituye un alegato a la creatividad del anónimo maestro cantero que la diseñó, elevándola sobre el plano;: ‘Silo princeps fecit’. ‘El príncipe Silo me hizo’.
