Prepping the forest road for gravel

in Homesteading4 months ago (edited)

Now the old road is complete, we are working on a different forest road on my property. And maybe one day both will connect. But for now we are forging a path through the forest, pulling up stumps, laying down dirt and soon will have a gravel top dressing.

We have been working on this road for about two years now, at first it was all chainsaws, lobbers and sawsalls. But now we can get back there with bigger equipment like my skid steer.

A small part of this road already has gravel, the area is already very compacted. But past that is all freshly applied dirt. And at the time we just got rains and was too soft to lay down gravel with their big truck.

Luckily its been a few days without rain again (guess that is good in this case) so the road has hardened up and ready for gravel.

We preserved the largest of trees, as most were scrub trees and the few large ones we wanted to keep. I think its important to keep the large trees as there are not many around. Seems the previous owner really liked to clear cut and sell to logging companies, that would explain that old road I completed.. Being an old logging road.

Driving down the road to make sure its hard enough for a dump truck. If my truck sinks surely will the dump truck.

A week ago a tried driving this in the UTV and it was forming big ruts, but this week its much better now its hardened up.

Had to clear some tree branches to make it easier for the dump truck to get back here.

Took just a minute, climbing up in the bed of my truck to reach.

We can see one of the turnaround spots, making it easier to get around back there without backing up all the way.

Amazing to see how far this has come, it just to be just dense woods.. no path at all.. now we can get back there with ease and soon to be even more easy with gravel added.

At the end of the forest road is a creek, we are planning on having a bridge engineered. Its beyond our skill and looking into finding someone that can weld beams together to span it.

But for now the road ends here, a nice place to come down and relax. During the summer its cooler by the creek in the wood line, and a very quiet and secluded place to get away.

The stream is very low now, but normally its a foot or two deep.

If my truck fits the dump truck should too for the most part.

Really glad we have got so much work done around here. Another project wrapping up.

Soon I will get some new pictures with the gravel added, will look completely different.

Not bad, the tires are not that covered in mud. So I think we are ready to add the gravel. This will help with erosion and keep the road up longer. Just like the old road we worked on, will probably need rock added every so often.

Drove the truck back to the workshop and its ready for its next adventure. Sure it wont be long.

Soon the trucks will arrive with gravel and dump many truckloads of crushed limestone on the road. Will post an update once complete.

This is a really big Forest. It will make sense if you add gravel to the road so that you can enjoy the road

Yeah there is a lot of forest back there, having a road makes it more easy to get in there.

That's awesome. It must be nice to own so much land. I have always wanted to own a big chunk of land like that. I don't know what I would do with it, but I think it's just part of that American Dream thing. At this point, I will likely never see that come true though. I'll just have to settle for my 1/4 acre!

It is nice, but also can be a lot of responsibility if I want it to be. Of course I can just leave the forest alone but its nice also reforming it to my needs.

I feel ya, most of my life I grew up on less than an acre. It was a little bit too tight for me.

I'd like enough space that I could set up my own nine hole disc golf course if I wanted.

That would be cool

Is nice that the was no rain. If it finally rains the road will be moody to drive so it will be nice to apply gravel as mentioned. I love that stream. Are you the only one that makes use of the road?

Yep, having that gravel should help out a lot with the mud.

Me and the people that work on this farm will make use of it. Though its not a public road.

For those 2 years.. the improvements are clear. 😊😊

It sure is, come a long way.

You already made the first, second step.. the next step will be easy for you. Hope it will.😊

the great work you are doing on your property is admirable, I like the path you are making, especially the places you widened so you can maneuver and return, a great idea. I hope you can soon build the bridge that crosses the stream, and it doesn't rain for a while so the road with the stones can enter.
Excellent workHello @solominer

Ah thanks, yeah hopefully those wide spots and turn arounds will be helpful in the future.

Will do updates as more happens such as the bridge.

Wow a lot is been put into making this beautiful.

Good job friend!

Sure has but well worth it I think.

thanks

Ooh wow
This improvement is a lot. I’m sure you’d pour the gravel so it can circulate
Well done!

Yeah soon we will have the gravel, thanks.

All the work and time they spend there making this rural road is a great investment for the value of the property, having internal roads in the countryside beyond the use that can be given to them, puts a lot of value on a property.

It is incredible how much progress they have made, now all that remains is to make the bridge so they can go beyond the lake

Thank you very much dear friend @solominer for showing us this great work that you are doing

I think so too, it will add value and utility to the area.

Will do more updates as we lay down gravel and when we find someone to build a bridge. Glad you are enjoying seeing the progress here.

Solid truck honestly looks like it can handle everything well and has a large bed!

Yeah I love my truck, its great. Its the long bed version so it can hold up to eight feet of cargo.

That is great!!!

It was a wise decision the preserve the large trees.

Let's hope there's no more rainfall for this period so you won't have to dump your truck😅

Yeah I am sure the wildlife is thankful as well.

Me too, that would be nice.

F'ing gorgeous. Not sure why I censored myself.

haha no worries, it sure is.

It makes sense that you will pour pebbles on this land. Otherwise, your car would be stuck in the mud. Your car looks very strong, but there's no need to force the car.

Yep rocks should help out a lot with that.

Thanks, yeah its a great truck.

Man it is tough work, takes lots of times and efforts to finish the job.. I've tried it in my hometown when I had to make a way from the mountain and it turned out way difficult than i thought cuz we didn't had tractor.

Your place is looking way better than the last time I've seen in the photos.. all that greenery, ah you did a great job.

I feel ya on steep areas, we have an area we plan on developing for a forest road. But it has quite the incline so it will be a challenge.

Thanks, yeah everything is quite awake and green this time of year.

Yeah it should be.. thanks

I've never realized how much work it is for such a project until today. There are many people complaining about paths not being created here and there but it surely isn't an easy thing especially if you don't have a team to work with.

It sure is a lot of work, but having it can really change everything when it comes to an areas accessibility.

I guess it depends on the biome, if its desert its more straight forward. But here were its all forest it will try to retake the road eventually.

I remember when you first started that project.. it's coming along nicely

It’s cool seeing a project come together. Looking forward to the graveled shots…

Hi, good job preparing the new forest road and it's great that the big trees remain, nice post my friend.👍👍👍

Those places look very good
