Harvests, PDC, NFL, Sunflower Harvest, Spokane County Fair, Destruction Derbies - Sunday

It's getting chillier in the mornings and a real feel of Fall is in the air now. Yesterday morning a bit cloudy as some spits of weather headed towards us. It only amounted to sprinkles but kept the day rather cool.

PDC Finals day was going on there were some solid matches played. I got out to the garden and roamed through the rows. I marked another squash for seed and grabbed the 4 that were ready.

One of the tomato plants broke its string holding it up so there are tomatoes that busted off the vine which is why so many green ones. Also one of the branches on the Anaheim pepper plant broke so I had to pop the peppers off.

The finals were on the same time as the Hawks played so I put them on side by side on the tv. In the end Littler won by a good margin. Seattle managed a win in overtime that we heard on the way to town.

I had meant to do it prior but got to it in the morning. The sunflowers needed to be cut down so I grabbed the garden cart and set to it.

IMG_20240915_104009.jpg

I cut the heads from all the stalks and piled the heads while I yarded the stalks out of the ground and tossed them over the fence to the sheep.

IMG_20240915_105221.jpg

They were all super stoked and happily munching away as more stalks flew over the fence and bounced off of various animals.

It was just one row and I ended up with a few heads. I will probably go ahead and dry these by stuffing a piece of conduit through the middle and setting the conduit stringer up in the shed to dry. Or I could just throw them to the birds...

Inside watching the last of the darts before we were to leave I was a t the board and was rather surprised to throw this. Center bull, outer bull, 13 and the flights were perfectly lined up.

Of we went to the valley and to the fair grounds. We parked out a bit to avoid the $10 parking fee so had a bit over a 1/4 mile walk to the gate.

IMG_20240915_133420.jpg

The clouds were nice to keep the temps moderate as we headed into the fair.

IMG_20240915_134747.jpg

First place was the huckleberry shake stand where R ended up with a big ice cream that ended up far to much for any of us to finish.

IMG_20240915_135442.jpg

We wandered through the buildings and the various tables of wares. Every year the fair gets less and less vendors but it's due to the cost of the space has gone up massively. The reason everything is so pricey at fairs. The boys went through the games a bit but got a solid lesson in the insanity of amusement pricing. They both seemed to sour on the whole thing realizing how little they get for the insane prices. Better they learn early and save oodles of money and disappointment over the years.

We headed into the grand stand for the derby a bit early so we could get our seats. We picked the very top so we could have a backrest for the few hours we would be there.

IMG_20240915_153753.jpg

Started out with oval races and a bit of a sift through the ride to see which motors will keep going.

After the hour of races it was time for the powder puff derby, which is the women drivers. All smallish cars they were hitting pretty hard.

IMG_20240915_174330.jpg

THEN the yard bird on the left and the light blue car had just smacked head on into each other when the number 18 car slammed into the blue one from behind and ended up with the car on the hood. It was a serious impact and there was serious concern for the blue car woman's neck due to the whiplash.

Out came the fire department with the jaws of life which they used to cut the door open so she could get out. It took quite a while but in the end she climbed out on her own, waved to the stadium, and walked away to be checked out by the paramedics outside the arena.

Eventually the first round was done and the compacts were next. They did rolling starts and then it was chaos.

IMG_20240915_182553.jpg

Cars ended up slamming into the barriers and nearly hitting the gates around. People would be diving away from the railing as cars came careening towards them. Dirt sprayed in big rooster tails hitting people all around the rail.

IMG_20240915_182555.jpg

Then the full size cars came on with the big motors and nice super loud straight header pipes.

IMG_20240915_184704.jpg

It was a killer derby with some wild impacts. 2 cars ended up on the barriers and one even hit the rail and bent the metal of one panel pretty well.

IMG_20240915_184847.jpg

It was after 7pm when the last car stopped and the mass exodus from the grand stand happened.

IMG_20240915_184850.jpg

As we walked back to the car we were treated with a quite nice sunset.

IMG_20240915_191501.jpg

The hot tub felt SUPER nice after how sore I was from the walking.

Today I get the boys to school, get harvests done, deal with the plastic from the upper garden, till the garlic garden, work on the scooter, move posts to wood pile area for eventual cover build, deal with the sunflowers, spread more amaranth and tobacco seeds around the farm, and figure out dinner in the evening.
