Hallo Steemians,
Today, February 4th is World Cancer day.
And the theme of this year is 'We Can, I Can' as we all have to engage in order to reduce the global burden of cancer.
But we must first of all recognize that cancer is not a death sentence, as there are remedies to reduce suffering and improve survival.
Dr. Etienne Kurg, the WHO Director for the Department of Management of Non communicable Diseases, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention stated that "All countries can do more to prevent and treat cancer, by acting upon the main causes of cancer. Also by strengthening the health system response, we can ensure earlier diagnosis and better access to affordable treatment by qualified personnel, thereby saving million of lives".
The truth is, early detection of cancer helps to greatly reduce the financial impact, and also ensures that people continue to work and support their families while managing their care.
While early diagnosis is important, Prevention is key.
I will like us to engage in these preventive tips which will reduce the risks for cancer.
Avoid using tobacco
Eat healthy diets
Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active
Protect yourself from the sun
Get immunized e.g., HPV
Avoid risky behaviours such as unprotected sex and sharing of needles
Practise regular self exams and screenings for various types of cancers, such as cancer of the skin, colon, cervix and breast.
Remember, early detection makes treatment most likely successful.
Take cancer prevention into your own hands, starting today.
The rewards will last a lifetime.
