Intelligent robots, a paradigm shift is coming with more advanced and complex minds

image1 (1).jpeg

When we think about a future of humanity in which we live amongst AIs, or Artificial Intelligence, we usually imagine horrible scenarios like the ones depicted in famous movies like Terminator or The Matrix, where humans are destroyed or enslaved.

However, I actually think that one of the most important issues will be about psychology, dedicated precisely to the robots of the future.

If there is the possibility of one day figuring out how to make AIs with a similar intelligence level as to a human (and since technology advances exponentially there are serious possibilities that we will achieve it in this century, much earlier than many imagine), then these robots will undoubtedly, have feelings, just like us.

And then there’s the possibility that if emotion and intelligence are inextricably linked, there’s no such thing as an intelligent robot with no emotion, in which case the question of how much emotion an autonomous robot should have is, in some ways, out of the control of the programmer dealing with intelligence. | Source

And assuming that these beings will possess feelings, we could ask ourselves, what kind of feelings will they have?

The feelings we humans have today are based on two points: First, they come from large scale genetic factors, changes that we have accumulated gradually over billions of years as we evolved from being little microbes to more complex beings such as mammals and primates. And second, changes in our individual environment and life experiences.

Some Examples:

Both of these criteria are deeply related to each other. As a simple example, if a parent had two children, and one had suicidal tendencies while the other had tendencies about having love for life, there are more chances that the one that will reproduce will be the second child, and therefore he will be the one passing his "loving" genes to future generations.

In other words, it seems that the very reason that we are alive and living in a relatively balanced way (and yes, there are ongoing wars around the world as it has been always the case, but usually not at the family level but at more socially abstract levels) is that the genes that have survived generation after generation are those of people who are tend to do good things for society.

As a counter-example, imagine that in some inexplicable way all the genes (and the mentality we have as a result) of the almost 7 billion human beings of today are changed overnight to be genes that make us prone to kill people. It is almost certain that in a few years there will be a really small amount of humans alive on the planet, and very possibly we would lose everything related to technological innovations in the process, the end result could be something similar as a modern dark ages.

But beyond the genes, every person also has the emotional component that develops after many years of life, a component perhaps as important as the genetic, and that in the case of humans, since we are conscious beings and we are aware of our own existence, becomes a powerful reason that makes us search for constant improvements.

That is, the fact that one can have analyze our own mind gives us the amazing ability to identify what is wrong with us, and look for ways to improve it in order to solve whatever issue there is.

But even more interesting is the fact that as the level of education in the people increases, so does not only the level of perception of oneself, but also the level of perception at the global level (that is, understanding that we do not live alone and that we are all together in this experience that we call life).

Perhaps you are wondering what does all of this have to do with the more than likely existence of intelligent robots in the future? Well, actually, a lot!

Emotions help people to decide what is important and to integrate complex information into crucial decisions. So it might be useful to try to make a robot that has emotions too. | Source

Nevertheless, we should ask ourselves, how will these AIs develop good morals and proper principles if they are created "out of the blue" in a laboratory? And if they develop a moral code, under what principles and influences? And assuming that these AIs believe they are doing "good", could that good mean eradicating us from the planet to secure their own existences or the survival or other species on the brink of extinction?

I always like to take the optimistic side when it comes to the future and I believe that as the intellect of every living being increases (any type of being) it will be able to see how beautiful the Universe is and realize the fact that it is worth preserving all the life we can encounter, but the reality is that many times our believes can be wrong (just several centuries ago ago the majority of the people was totally convinced that the Earth was flat).

To that end, perhaps it is wise for us to fully understand ourselves first in the way we are today. How are our feelings generated in the brain? What neural patterns govern feelings like love, kindness, hatred or envy?

Having complete understanding about these issues could allow us to be better prepared to make sure that the robots we create are not only nice towards our own species, but towards any form of life that there is.

The clock is ticking and decisions need to be taken

Or maybe what we should do is to gradually evolve these AIs in a controlled environment, where we feed them information about everything there is about us and what we have been throughout our history, the pretty and the ugly, to feed them everything and hope that these AIs understand that although we certainly have not been (and are not) perfect, that we have arrived as far as we have come because many of us strive to make this a better world for ourselves, our friends and family, and of course for the future generations.

This issue I think deserves a thorough discussion among the world leaders in these fields (computer scientists, robotics, neuroscience, psychology), Elon Musk himself have said several times that he is scared about an AI getting out of control and harming humanity.

"At least when there's an evil dictator, that human is going to die. But for an AI, there would be no death. It would live forever. And then you'd have an immortal dictator from which we can never escape." Elon Musk. | Source

Although regardless of what could happen when the time comes to really take global action about this subject, AIs will come to exist anyway, with or without an ethical or moral framework, so we can only hope that the next generation of leaders on this field are properly educated when it comes to the inherent danger that is not having enough understanding about our creations.

My point is that soon it will be time to bring this subject to light on a large scale and expose it to the public, perhaps even writing standards and rules about how to create these AIs in initially controlled environments (and only initially, because as time pass these beings will create other beings even more advanced, and from then on everything will probably be totally out of our control)

Or in other words (and this is something that I know today sounds controversial, or even unprecedented and / or impossible for most people), humans today will evolve to leave behind our biological bodies and we will merge with our creations, allowing us to become superior beings (or rather, better suitable to thrive in the Universe and comprehend it better) in all the senses of the word to what we are today. I just hope I can live to see (and maybe even be a part of) this transition.

What do you think about this subject?

Would you like to see intelligent robots with feelings sharing this planet with us?

Do you share the fear Elon Musk has about this technology?

Do you think you could be friends with an intelligent robot?

Right now, everyone is commenting that AI has trouble identifying images and using that failure as an all-encompassing example. But that’s something very specific, and something that only appears easy because of how hardwired it is in our own brains.

AI is mastering the smaller but more important skills, such as strategy. The best evidence for this is from the AlphaGo match, where the AI beat the world champion. And yet, people ignore the fact because it can’t recognize images.

Humans evolved to see, but imagine how difficult it is to teach a machine to recognize something, specifically something three dimensional. It’s near-impossible to code and relies entirely on machine learning algorithms. The fact that machines have gotten so good at recognizing things like faces should be worrying.

Now, let’s analyze what could completely wipe out humanity. Nukes probably won’t do it, as there will be people in bunkers hiding out. A solar flare might not do it, even if it destroys a lot of the asteroid. A meteorite could possibly do it, but we have good tech to turn it away. Even self-replicating nanobots would only destroy a single planet, because planets are surrounded by a vacuum.

AI could wipe out humanity. It could send self replicating probes to planets everywhere and it’s strategy would likely be better than anything a single human could come up with.

Elon Musk realizes that the best time to change this reality is NOW. AI is still developing and placing limits on it could possibly save millions of lives. It will be a while before any super intelligent machines emerge, but they’re coming and there isn’t any stopping them. Controlling them is Musk’s goal and with his initiative, humanity just got a little bit safer.

This is just starting so its completely understandable for they to have issues like the one you mention. It doesn't mean anything in the long run.

The fact that machines have gotten so good at recognizing things like faces should be worrying.

Yes, that technology could easily be used to bad things, but that's the way any technology is, they can be used for good or bad things.

AI could wipe out humanity. It could send self replicating probes to planets everywhere and it’s strategy would likely be better than anything a single human could come up with.

Yes, they could. Since you mentioned Musk I suppose you are also aware that he believes we must eventually merge with machines in order to survive long term. So even if the AIs end up being better, we could still survive and improve ourselves thanks to them.

This century is going to be one of big changes mate!

Interesting premise. I'm not so convinced that intelligence = feelings. I think intelligence can be, and maybe will be, fostered without what we classically call feelings.

That said, I understand the possibility of a problem with equal or superior intelligence causing harm or benefit to the race. I'm a basic optimist, so think generally that it could be a very big benefit to humans, but can see the possibility of the opposite.

I guess my question would be this: If we create an intellect equal to our own are they (the constructed intellect) then human or on par with humans?

Thanks for a wonderful and thought provoking article. Very nicely done.

If we create an intellect equal to our own are they (the constructed intellect) then human or on par with humans?

If that were the case I wouldn't consider them humans, but I would consider them on par with humans.

I found this content as very informative. We all know that technology is being innovating day by day. This is not an impossible idea. maybe in few years right now, decades, or maybe by century. In some contest people would really to do new things, new techs for them to be recognize. People have hunger to do something that is very useful for the humanity. Many of things we thought that is a very Impossible to happened, but it does like what we have right now such as internet, computers, & any form of machines, so there is a big possibility for it to be created. The fear of Elon Musk that AIs could be an evil design which is made by it's inventor. If there is Bad there would be a counter. A robot could be a friend if what it's Invented programmed his brain. That is a good thing to have. A friend that comes from out of no where, who have the same Intellect and felling such as human and I am hoping that if people would create an AIs as what you said I'm praying that Good Moral Character and also the conscience for him to do what's good enough to live through out humanity.

I think that soon we will all see how the level of knowledge of artificial intelligence will grow. This is happening now. There are many examples of this. Nevertheless, it will be difficult for us to assume what the robots will begin to feel.
When we talk about artificial intelligence, we integrate this word with the word robot. That is, imagine smart robots. But seeing the current trend this word will have wider limits of understanding. For example, now it is fashionable to add a bailiff "smart" to various things. Smart-TV, smart-smartphone, clever-washing machine, clever-vacuum cleaner, even smart coffee makers are now available on sale. That is, people integrate artificial intelligence into all spheres of their lives and into various devices. This is done to simplify our lives.
On the other hand, if we are talking about giving artificial intelligence the emotions. Will these emotions be like human ones? That is, in some cases we can talk about such a concept as a "human factor". These are cases that occur through the fault of people. And now, during the development of unmanned vehicles, developers argue that such cars will be the loss of the human factor and therefore the number of accidents will decrease. That is, I mean that doing robots with artificial intelligence and with emotions is how to create an improved version of the person. The main thing is that he would be controlled by his creators.
I look to the future with optimism and therefore I think that technologies change our life in the right direction.

I was listening to an interview some weekes ago about the future robots. It is happening and very soon. They want them to be like slaves living among human and waiting for the big countries to decide when this should happen. Somehow it is a scary thought to see slavery happening again. I dont know how the robots will feel, but only time can tell.
As humans we are still struggling to control our mind and use our sub-conscious the right way. If they would master it better than us, thats the question. This can change the entire future of the human race,

I would like to read more about what you are saying. But I think like you, enslaving would be a little bit risky since no one likes it.

Either way, that would get harder as AIs get better.

with the innovation of AI only oligarch can benefit about it, since it is expensive, rich people can use it using advance algorithm to predict the future for business purposes; like stocks, crypto and other business games.

Nice ..
Great work from you, good information
Thanks for sharing this with us

Interesting one, keep it up.

One time it will come that the robot will come in life. And we will perform all our essential tasks. But sorry one time it will come luke this,it will destroy the word. Because of them the person will become slow and lazy.

They will not necessarily destroy the world, and we will not necessarily become lazy. There is an event called technological singularity and for it to happen we will probably need the help of synthetic intelligences.

great technology. thanks for sharing.

Great one. Humans are also being advanced into this, change of technology is not only in machines but also in humans, talk of the robots, this is great
Thanks for sharing.

Technology is fast growing..but building robots withs feelings should be put to a stop...one thing with machines is that, there could easily be hacked or manoverd. .or even affected with virus.when such happens.it could be risky for people

Yes, there will be a whole new generations of risks, but there will also be benefits, as always.

Technology innovations should be embraced in my opinion.

Is it possible for an AI to exceed the intelligence of man? I think that's one question we should find an answer. If so, then how scary future can be?

Of course it is possible.

Not necessarily scary, there are ways in which we could survive and evolve along with the AIs.

It was terrible when making the robots have feelings of suicide.
Interesting to read, working on this task.

great. technology?. thanks for ;sharing??? Bijoy

Fabulous, awesome piece of information you have shared .... thanks

A great robot waw @adsactly, your post really catches my attention

Very interesting and informative post ..
I've watched a lot of programs about robots with intellect and many times I've spoken in the news.
It's certainly cool that the world does not stand still and steps in front of big steps, but it sometimes becomes uncomfortable, but suddenly, something will go wrong.
After all, the machine always remains a machine and sometimes it breaks down ...
I hope all the same for the best and in our World will be the World ..
Even with smart robots ...

After all, the machine always remains a machine and sometimes it breaks down ...

Yes, just like us hehe, we also break down sometimes :)

Unlike Elon, I don't fear this technology. If an advanced AI emerges through reinforcement learning then I would hypothesis it could have emotions similar to our own. Of course, is this is true then it begs the question of exactly how AI are we ourselves?

I expect by the time AI reaches any real capability of emotions we will long have upgraded our own hardware and be well advanced of it - transhuman as they say. I personally look forward to it.

I expect by the time AI reaches any real capability of emotions we will long have upgraded our own hardware and be well advanced of it - transhuman

Yes, which is the same as saying a human after the technological singularity has happen, but its difficult to say what would happen first.

The risk with AI is certainly there, but since technology always brings more positive things than negative ones, I think it will be all right for us.

That would be amazing if robots had real feelings.. technology just keeps improving its amazing to think of what will be created in the years to come :)

Perhaps in the future it will be normal to have a robots as close friends :D

What is a logical to think that something inherently inhuman will think or act like us. it may understand our actions and out psychology but it may develop truly different feelings from us.

Hopefully we dont treat them racistly. As we normally do with those who come and take our jobs.

it may understand our actions and out psychology but it may develop truly different feelings from us.

You are right, hence the reason why Musk is worried and why the developing of AI needs to be taken as something serious. Because it will happen one way or another, its up to us if this ends up being something good or bad for us.

I think it will be good, because technology innovations always tend to bring more good than bad.

Oh, how much I love reading o this kind of subjects.
Robots with feelings, he he?!

Nope!

That's not going to be, not genuine ones anyway (remember clones?). The best case it's going to be a cyborg.
Elon Musk is right to fear AI, he knows better than 99% of people why. I mean, this guy is going to put a man on Mars (dead or alive, we will see that). I bet anything, that he can see what other people just doesn't.
And not because in some weird way, the AI is going to decide by itself to decimate all the humans. Instead of, is more likely that some stupid military dude, with way to much power will decide to press the wrong button.

Any type of intelligence can develop feelings, it doesn't matter if its a biological intelligence or a synthetic one.

The more intellect you have, the more capacity to develop feelings and emotions, of course, not necessarily, but the possibility is there.

It will be exciting watch this industry and its creations get more complex with time.

Intelligence does not develop emotions. Is the other way around. Imagine a logical machinery having desires 😅. It can mimic feelings? Yes, but that's all it will always do, nothing more. No matter how complex they get. Come with some arguments to sustain your beliefs, if you have any 😁.

Intelligence does not develop emotions. Is the other way around

So do you think emotions develop intelligence?

For example, about the possibility of robots developing feelings, you can read this report

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/robots-and-ai-could-soon-have-feelings-hopes-and-rights-we-must-prepare-for-the-reckoning-a7597966.html

It can mimic feelings? Yes

The thing is, as they get better, knowing if they are truly feeling or simply mimicking will not be easy.

For example, about the possibility probability of robots developing feelings, you can read this report

The thing is, as they get better, knowing if they are truly feeling or simply mimicking will not be easy.

Thank you 😃!

Now, please have a look around and understand that we do live in a simulation. Our bodies (brains) are the in-game avatar. Our feelings did not came as an evolutionary step or whatever they blubber about that 😂. We need those feelings and we have them all, no matter the circumstances of our lives. There is no such thing as an ever happy person 😉(that it will be possible if is just neuro- chemistry involved). And this is my argument 😊.
I may also just say stupid things out of ignorance. In that case, forgive and help me understand why I am wrong 😅.

We're a long way from creating emotions, but AI is becoming intelligent at the nanosecond.

Very good post. I'm worried about the future of robots. Have you seen West World or Blade Runner? Wow, that's scary.

Kind Regards.

Carlos.

Yes I saw those 2, the new season of Westworld is right around the corner by the way.

I would simply advise you to take the optimist side pal.

AI and robots will gonna be game changer of our life and bussiness

Technology now a day come in every part of life and with out technology nothing no work is perfect . it is the great change of technology that come in world

Well I definitely share Elon's thoughts. AI is like the internet or bitcoin, it cannot be shut down. Once it starts rolling there's no going back, so we better set certain things in place before it develops too much and crosses the point of no return.

I love you

Very interesting subject. It's quite difficult to predict the future, even one without AI. If humanity have survive even the worst of the wars is probably because a feeling called love. I still believe in us humans for I believe in love, and I hope we will become wise enough to create an AI that will work together with humans for a better world.

There's a lot of thought going around that strives to compare and contrast the synthetic with the human. However, I think it is perhaps more helpful to start by attempting to learn more about differences in human variability. Through understanding the health or dysfunction of human cognition we learn a lot about the types of cognitive precision that are more critical to advanced general cognition.

I feel like there will be a merge between AI and ourselves for sure. That we will ascend, somehow into superbeings beings. It's the next step in our evolution. This post was fascinating, i too hope to see a glimpse of the potential this new technology will have on how we operate at ever increasing efficiency levels

great article, we had an event with singularity university on ai and agi and my very questions was what is intelligence? for me higher intelligence is the ability to connect to higher source and receive intuitive inner guidance, rather than simply analysing something I wonder if ai can ever have? I also wonder if robots do get to super intelligence do we have to start giving them rights, like if one commits a murder do we have to allow it a trial before we turn off it's power?! many questions. Wanted tor esteem this but is past the time.
