A Little History of the Event...

The main event has been a staple of the poker community since 1970 with a starting buy in of $5,000 by a handful of individuals playing a mix of poker games. 

These games included Razz, five-card draw, deuce-to-seven, and of course no-limit-hold’em.

Over the years the game has evolved into No-Limit Texas Hold’Em with a buy-in of $10,000 and over 6,000 people participating in the tournament in 2017. 

This is the first year that participants can buy-in using a credit card, which seems a little sketchy but to each his own. 

The final table, which used to be called the November Nine, will instead be held weeks later instead of months. 

The game has become very popular, and having the final table shortly after the main event helps keep the T.V. ratings up and the people interested. 

This is a 10 day event leading up to the final table, so there is plenty of coverage to enjoy over that time span. 

Even Celebrities Take A Shot At Winning It!

This event has become a hotspot for many aspiring celebrity poker players to join in, some of the names include Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Edward Norton, and Tobey Maguire to name a few. 

As I am watching Day 1A on the featured table on ESPN2 a familiar face is seated. 

If you are a fan of the National Football League a very large man by the name of Richard Seymour can be spotted. 

He is using 1 of his 3 Superbowl rings as a placeholder, I mean who wouldn’t right? 

That’s a pretty nice intimidating play on his part.

Life Changing Winnings!

The 2016 Main Event winner, Qui Nguyen, brought home his first WSOP bracelet and a cool $8,005,301. 

Let that life changing money sink in for a little bit. 

Make no mistake this is not an easy tournament to win, many professional poker players enter and very few have actually won the event. 

Late Registration Is Still Going If You Have The Will

If you are in Las Vegas and decide to give it a go, there are still opportunities to get into the big event but you better act quick before the late registration ends. 

Alright, time to pay a little more attention to the tournament.
