Invictus by William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Ever since I came across this poem, the last two lines have been stuck in my head. To me it's beautiful and something to always remember for life. Whenever I think about complaining or blaming someone else, these lines put things in perspective. I find it rather motivational.
What do you think?
Here are some process pictures of the painting:
Today's quote from ' The Art of Creative Thinking' by Rod Judkins
"Painting to me is constant searching. I can see what I want, but I can't get there, and yet you have to be open enough that if it goes another way, then let it go that way."- Jamie Wyeth
