천일홍은 중심자목 비름과의 한해살이 풀로써 열대 아메리카가 원산지로 알려져 있으며, 주로 7~10월에 피고 보라색, 붉은색, 흰색 등의 작은 꽃입니다. 꽃색이 오랫동안 변치 않아서 천일홍이라 부른답니다.
꽃말은 매혹, 변하지 않는 사랑으로 알려져 있고 관상용으로 꽃꽃이에도 자주 사용하며 건조시켜 오래 볼 수 있는 드라이플라워로도 좋습니다.
성질은 따뜻하고 은은하고 평이한 맛으로 알려져 있고 혈액순환과 콜레스테롤 분해효과가 있다고 합니다. 기침, 천식, 갑상선 질환, 안과질환, 피부질환, 두통에 효능이 있어 신경안정 효과, 불면증에도 도움이 된다고 합니다.
