TINY DOG OR BIG DOG - to live and die with your pets

in #writing7 years ago

The debate about the best type of dog will never be won. There are literally thousands of breeds of all shapes and sizes, that can meet any given person’s specific love. Some are furry and fluffy. Others are loud and protective. But one thing we can talk about here is what size should they be?

According to the site, www.dogsbite.org (a site literally dedicated to the education that dogs bite), fatalities in 2016 by breed are ranked from worst down in this order:

1. Pitbull (22 deaths)

2. Labrador (3 deaths)

3. American Bulldog (2 deaths)

Ok, so no Chihuahua’s on that list so far.

That said, on the other side of the coin, a great many dogs have saved people’s lives, from their owners to complete strangers. Take Katrina, an ironically named, black labrador that saved a man from drowning before rising flood waters from a hurricane. Another story in that vein is of the “half-breed wolf dog,” Shana, who heroically saved an elderly couple from a snow storm, digging a tunnel in the snow and dragging them to safety and warmth.

Again, not something I see a Chihuahua doing.

Now, on the other hand, this writer has first-hand experience with a dachshund saving a friend’s life. He had gotten super drunk, and before finally passing out, decided to make himself a bowl of rice. Then in the night, while sleeping on his back, he threw up in his mouth. His wiener dog jumped on his chest, and munched on the vomit until the airway was clear, and my friend awoke with the slim muzzle of his dog all the way inside his mouth (something a giant pit bull wouldn’t have been able to do.)

And while we’re on that, take the case of Isabelle Dinoire [1], who after feeling depressed, took a bunch of sleeping pills with the intention of killing herself. After passing out, and throwing up the pills and contents of her stomach, her labrador proceeded to eat the vomit, and then her face, horribly disfiguring her chin, nose, and ears. She later became the first person to receive a face transplant from a dead women (a schoolteacher who had successfully killed herself, (ironically enough) in a nearby town.

Some hero that Lab turned out to be, right? To try and kill yourself, wake up, horribly mauled, and with the face of a dead women who had succeeded where you failed? No thank you.

So I guess that solves it.

Small dogs win.

For now.

Sort:

just last year in south west nigeria a dog killed a grandma while home alone, its saddening and its own of the very first news of such round here, but the common cause of death in Nigeria is Dog bite resulting in Rabbies. because we have so many untreated dogs here.

Just like humans, each dog has a different attitude. Some are gentle, some are harsh. Some don't bite, some do.

So just like in humans, we must keep a "safe distance" from dogs that aren't ours and observe their behavior.

But sometimes, I wish I was a dog whisperer so that I could approach any dog I find adorable and he'll understand and calm down when I say "Don't bite me, I just wanna make friends with you." 😂

I've had both types of dogs. I had a 250 lb English Mastiff/Great Dane Mix who sadly passed away, and now I have two 7 lb Hairless dogs (Chinese crested) They both have their pros and cons, lol. If I had to bet on one to save me though, sadly it would have been the huge one, lol. The dogs I have now are adorable but useless in that regard :D

Hello how are you, I am a lover of animals and especially of dogs I think that each small friend is different according to their breed but will always love and protect its owner, will be faithful and a good friend, so any breed will be good for Anyone! greetings from Venezuela I just wrote a real story about a very cute dog called cow (this is because of its spots) if you want you can go to see her, good post.

Screenshot_2018-02-15-10-22-40.pngRecently i wrote about different breeds of dogs on my page. To you think chihuahua and daschund are small breeds you enjoy to keep. I tell you large animal have their advance as well. In my country Giant breed of dogs like great dane, bullmastiff are use as guard dogs even the large breed like rottweiler, german sheperd, belgian sheperd. The are good one. But its your opinion though. There was atime i wrote on dog advantage every breed have their own advantage. Ok let me tell you this, am a veterinary doctor on steemit chihuahua dogs are classifed under specie of dogs know as brachiocephalics breeds. They are prone to many diseases than other breeds they are also sensitive to some drugs than other breeds. I love your bone of contention anyway. When i was in vet school we discuss this severally....weldone it @afeezee the vet
