RE: Caught Up In Something That May Not Even Work! Still Trying Just Not Sure.

in #travel2 years ago (edited)

Not just word vomit, promise lol

Gout is a bitch! it's from build up of basically uric acid crystals (urine). Diuretic is what you want (coffee, most hot liquids). pee as much as you can. All the salt water in the world sometimes wont help until those crystals break up so tons of water, tons of peeing. The gout is making this harder on you so find ways to not think about it till your gout is gone. I'm sure you're feeling more snappy, i know i was last year when i had it, dont let the community see you all snappy, hurts moral.

Ok... I live off grid, have now for 4 years without any money to speak of. And without community, just my son and I. I did rainbow gatherings for almost a decade and lived in various communities all over the country during that time. Hitched most of it.

About the shower.

Get a shower tent for now. they are only like 40 bucks or something at walmart. If you have money for shipping i'll even send you one in great shape that we started with here... hell, i've got 2 in great shape and we now have a real, indoor shower and shitter. They are 4x4 foot and stand tall like 6.5 feet and are basic 2 pole tent. set up is super fast. you can tarp over them to keep them nicer. even build a 4x4 under them to keep it nice and level (that's what we did keeps it clean) if there is scrap lumber around. You can even just put up a barrier outside like a faux wall for some privacy and people will use it (scrap wood grate risen up couple inches for mud). 4 poles driven in the ground and one tarp wrapping them in a square with one end open and piece of tarp hung on twine over opening. Lot of options here that aren't $300 some aren't even money. Remember, the goal is a shower space). If there's wood for a fire, a pump, some copper tubing and a shower head you're in business. If people dont mind cold shower, no energy but the pump. Black tank in the tree above.

ok, communities are nearly always imbalanced in some way. Usually someone ends up taking charge so the community itself will work more smoothly. They work fairly smoothly for things like you're speaking of when there are dues, chain of command and things like that yet many "communities" (especially for nomads) are meant to be more free than this and it sounds like your's is meant to be more free.

What i've learned is that there will always be "bliss ninnies" (People not pulling their weight). I ran an experiment once with bliss ninnies. Every other kitchen in the woods was fed up with them so we invited them in and even made a bliss ninnie covered space called the "relaxation station". where they could just lay about and do nothing all day if they wanted still sharing our food. The result was surprising. The bliss ninnies all the sudden started doing shit to help out, then going back to the bliss tent lol. Before we knew it they were pluggin in and the work was easy. That is one isolated experiment but it was real and I personally conducted it.

Try incentivizing. Cleanup is always hard and whoever owns the land on paper usually ends up with that job among others. Find ways of incentivizing folks to help with it. I'm not sure what your space offers but i kind of get the gist. People are coming, camping for free and leaving shit all over. Been there. First thing... hand out trash bags and when you do, show people very nicely where to put them when full. This gets people thinking about their own use.

You can have silly stupid raffles for insanely stupid, no cost things and entry is this much trash picked up. sky is limit if the energy is fun.
You can charge minimum and it's to pay people for cleanup using the pitch "no one wants to do clean up so we are all throwing in $2 so henry will do it." (then pay henry to do it) Don't freak out at the ones that won't pay let them be you might get enough to pay henry.
Get creative.

If your community is long term, or you want to keep it really long term consider classes on what to do with all the trash. You could let them come free and it's entertaining enough many will. most trash is a very useable resource. all hdpe, ldpe and some others can be reformed in a toaster oven. If you make the right thing you've now turned that thing they just learned into something useable or sellable. cutting boards are great for this. They keep what they make of course but you might get people making this stuf for you and sell it to pay henry. All paper can be burned or re broken down to make new paper or logs to burn. people might enjoy learning about this if they have kids or whatever. All metal you fucking keep. done. Stack it. but you can have classes on small foundry work. build foundry with plaster of Paris and a bucket. folks in the class will not be learning how to make silly shit like they are so inspired to... they will be finding inside themselves a real desire to pick up trash. tricky tricky. keep it fun, no barking, no begging, no well ifs.

Most people that have had someone teach them something for free are more than willing to help them later as long as its not asked for directly like that. They are neat, informative share sessions that inspire and get people moving positively. Many people finding places to camp free in the woods have plenty of free time and some will even obsess over something like that. you want that.

Go back to the goal and ask from there each time this shit gets frustrating. What we thought we needed in the goal gets us stuck sometimes.

We sometimes get stuck thinking money is how we get things. What you need is a good shower space, not $300 (300 is what it costs for what you think you need right now thus why you believe you need the 300).

Once you again see the original goal, ask for that and i'm certain its a'lready on its way.

Sort:

Great advice thanks for that!
We are working things out as we go along. We have a propane water heater and well onsite so it will be a tent for the time being. The trash will be the biggest problem and the things people tear out for building their rigs.

Yea demo like that is a ton more trash than normal. a good way to sort it out might help.

sorry, themothership is me, forgot i was logged in on that one when i left that message lol.

It is all good! Trying to figure that out and it is a headache for sure. The good thing is that if it is wood we can burn it but insulation and stuff like that sucks for sure.

yea insulation is shitty to handle and everything. if it can be reused in something maybe but most of the time it needs to go out somewhere. Good luck with it man, i'm sure you guys can figure it out :)
