After spending the night in Kanab, Utah we thought it would be a good idea to do a little 4 wheeling on our way east. So we decided to go through Cottonwood Canyon Rd, which is just a unpaved county road.
We started started off on Highway 89 that goes to Highway 12. According to our GPS it should have taken us 3-4 hours to do, little did we know, we ended up spending a full 12 hours traversing the trail because of how muddy it ended up being.
After 4 hours and covering the first quarter of the trail and battling over-heating dew to the constant high RPMs needed to clean out our tires, we considered turning around but we had gone down some pretty steep hills that it would have been more effort to go back at that point plus a bit of stubbornness kept us moving forward.
About 3/4 of the way through we were pretty much out of gas, luckily we filled our gas cans before we left. So after a 15 minute break while we refueled, we were on our way again on the remaining stretch of the trail.
We reached Highway 12 just after dark and we spent the night driving to Colorado going no more then 45 MPH because of all the mud we collected in our rims were creating a violent vibration going any faster then that. we tried to look for a car-wash but the only one in a 60 mile radius was out of order.
It was a good day of mud wheeling and despite the challenges it presented it will live with us as a day we'll enjoy to remember.
Interesting article. There's no mud like Utah's mud!
Or Wyoming mud the couple of times a year that it rains.
If we get a rain that is longer than 5 minutes that is.
Great stuff, I will start reading from Part 1. Utah is my favorite too.
