The World Wide Web consortium proposed a new web standard, which would be based on biometric data. At the moment, this new authentication solution is being rolled out in all main web browsers and is expected to soon replace all Windows passwords.
One of the goals is to better protect users from phishing attacks, because passwords are still one of the weakest points of the internet. Mozilla has already adopted the new WebAuthn standard, and Chrome & Edge are expected to follow soon.
