After Facebook's security scandals, many people are beginning to seriously question the way they lead their digital lives. It is true that the social network violated the trust of many of its users and has handled the issue badly, but many times, this type of things could be minimized if we also put everything possible on our part.
Today, we give you a series of tips as a guide to keep your devices as private as possible and, thus, no second or third can take too much of your information. Take it as a warning and join the conversation we all should have in favor of a healthier digital life.
1. Control the permissions you grant to applications
Many applications are constantly monitoring you and could sell your information to third parties. Experts recommend that you revoke permissions to different applications that do not need it. It can be your location, access to your contacts, your mobile phone camera or your text messages, there are apps that work perfectly well without any of this.
If at any time you need to use any of these functions, we recommend that you enable them, do it, and then remember to disable them again.
2. Be careful what you share, even in private
Facebook publicly admitted that it monitored information from its users in private chats. This means that if you ever spent any nude in that way, it is likely that someone on Facebook has seen it. Or, worse, have it in your power.
On the other hand, try not to share, for safety, important information about you or your location. Your private data is for you and, only, for you.
3. Beware of the applications created within Facebook
It is easy to fall into the trap of doing quizzes or tests that require us to login with our Facebook account. This, precisely, was the error of many people that gave rise to what happened with Cambridge Analytica.
As harmless as it looks, a quiz that tells you which Game of Thrones character you are, or which is your political ideology after answering a series of questions, is taking more information than you think, and it can be very helpful in terms of big data
4. Cover the camera and microphone of your devices
Many will believe that it is a conspiracy theory and that we would do well with aluminum hats, but if we learned something from Black Mirror and Mr. Robot it is that, in terms of technology, we can be observed by many people without knowing it. Apparently, Mark Zuckerberg knew, and covers the camera of his laptop.
5. Read the terms and conditions
Let's accept it We all skip this because we trust that our data will not be sold or used by someone for bad, but, unknowingly, we are not reading important things that could be highly damaging. Our recommendation is that, as far as possible, check what you're getting into before clicking.
You must also do this when you update the application because many of them usually make changes in their terms and conditions over time.
6. Delete (and delete you) applications that you no longer use
Many of them can share your information in real time and surely you have not noticed. Try to have on your devices only what you use and now.
On the other hand, if you left or want to stop using any social network or application, we recommend that you delete your information from there, because if you no longer want to use it, you do not need your data at all.
