I'm an experimental particle physicist working at the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the LHC.
(this is the experiment I work on. No white coats, but safety helmets!)
As this is quite an exciting job that people are interested in, I am rather active on social media (particularly twitter). Recently I gave a tour to a group of #steemSTEM enthousiasts; and guess what? Now I am on steem! (thanks @lemouth and #steemSTEM team!)
What you can expect from my account is posts on hot topics in particle physics, particularly when it is in the media. I also have the possibility to take high tech pictures with explanations of what is happening, in my job I regularly get to visit all sorts of not frequently accessible high tech sites.
(selfie at test fusion tokamak JET)
I also attend many conferences and places where I am invited to teach, some more exotic than other, locationwise. It includes regular and fast costume changes
(visiting a particle physics detector lab at University of Oxford to look at a robot that I developed as a MSc student, only to show up at a fancy dinner 30 minutes later)
And then I regularly go to (particle) physics experiments, and I take visitor groups down 100 meter underground to our see our beautiful CMS detector.
And of course: #Shoes! And probably some food porn
(this is a dessert that I had at an excellent two-michelin star restaurant recently)
Let's see how it goes, I like variation as I am someone who really needs very very regular change. Also for the shoes :)
ps: suggestions on how to do better image formatting on the steem flavour of markdown are exceptionally welcome!
You joined the group! Now stay with us or you're doing it wrong!
It's good seeing you here, I was waiting since our visit for that :) Hope you have a great time here, steemSTEM is totally supporting you!
Thanks! I am trying to figure out what to write some posts about, if you have any suggestions just let me know :)
Gosh, you could write about a lot of things. Your experiences working for CERN, what it was like designing the CMS detector, your work promoting women in particle physics. You're a rock star, looking forward to hearing what you have to say :)
Talk about particle physics! People like that :)
And cables ! Cables are cool.
I like cables too!
Agreed, it's awesome to read about subjects the writer is passionate/knowledgeable about! I would love to learn more about your experiences at CERN!
Wether or not all your friends play rock paper scissors lizard spock ?😁
We do :)
You could do a broad overview of the LHC - that would be pretty cool. I read some popular science articles saying that the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC had made some of the first accurate mass measurements of the W Boson. That would be interesting to elaborate on if you have any inside knowledge. Or you could just talk about the W Boson. Or just Bosons. Anyways - welcome!
I hope you will benefit from this wonderful site. We really need some scientists to take advantage of it. Welcome to my name and the rest of everyone's name
Welcome to STEEM, I'm new here too. I look forward to following you :)
Warm Greetings, Catherine.
ps: looking at your profile, I now realise what an honour it was to see your face :)
The face is a very rare sight !
Haha :D
And I will let you know if I think of something that might be interesting.
Tbh, you could probably put everything you told us into several posts. 1k words is usually a good length (maximum) and you won't be able to fit everything in there.
I often aim for 1200, but that's pushing it a little.
Nice to meet you. It's soo cool !!!
Welcome to this great family.
I hope you're going to make a lot of success in this great community.
I wish you all the best !!!
Grid, that super computerCant believe even a scientist from CERN can be found here! I cant imagine how cool it is. I wonder if you @freyablekman have ever operated
Yes I use the grid on a regular basis and will write a post about it eventually
Well said
That's really thoughtful of y'all ☺
Glad you are here :) That tour was one of the best experiences of my life!
Wow, that is big praise! Thanks, I'm delighted to hear that!
Hello friend, you support me with a vote, greetings, blessings
Hi steemin it's very nice and honey . I hope you spent a good time here .. This a better place to enjoy your time . your introduction is good and you look best . plz upvoting and comment me. it's great for us!
https://steemit.com/life/@kingraju/i-am-the-king-of-this-world
Thanks, Honey :)
A warm welcome to Steemit Freya, you will find that the community you just set your foot into is a dynamic and vibrant one.
There is a lot of particle physics going on and around on our platform, with different styles, ideas and approaches.
I look forward to reading yours!
Hi, friend. It's amazing to have you here with us. Do explore and have fun. @greatness96 says WELCOME TO STEEMIT
It is great to have a top physicist (a private joke that no one may understand ;) ) here on board! Glad that you finally posted an introduction!
PS: I am in my train :)
Excellent, see you soon! And let me know if you don’t get those data cards and I will wield my bossy powers :-)
We have them. Am now reimplementing the other 4top analysis in MA5. Let's see how good we are in reproducing your results :)
Yeah should be easy, the lepton analysis mostly uses the same techniques as the standard supersymmetry search in the same final state (it is essentially a retune) so my advice would be to start from the gluino-mediated stop searches and just change the few selection cuts that are difficult:-)
I usually start from scratch. I am so used to the code this is way faster than copy pasting + modifying.
I need one hour, mostly. to code an analysis (and just because I like writing a lot of comments :p), but I don't have that hour easily at the moment. Maybe calmly from a coffee place in Lawrence next week (I still a pile of more important stuff to tackle, remember ;) )
Welcome to the community! Good luck! Followed!
Weee I'm so glad to see you here ! The visit of the CMS was amazing I loved it, and apart from the actual beast, you contributed greatly to the experience being able to answer basically any questions that we had :)
<p dir="auto">Thanks again for the visit and welcome ! <p dir="auto">As for the formatting, put the image inside of <code><center> tags to center it or inside <p dir="auto"><code><div class="pull-right">to put it on the right and <code><div class="pull-left">to pull it to the left.So essentially HTML instead of the markdown language? Thanks, I will try that
Most of the "basic" html works yes, bold tables, titles etc. But don't expect too much out of it.
sorry it thought this was an image!
Use center tags to center an image as well and use the box brackets to place attribute data. You can also use HTML markup.
To center an image
To resize an image
So I cannot upload my image to steemit and then resize it on the fly in markdown? disappointing :( :(
Wow. What a job
Welcome to Steemit @freyablekman ! :)
I hope you people at CERN don't accidentally create a black hole or something that wipes us all out in two seconds. I know, I probably sound ignorant, I'm not a physicist...
welcome to steemit
Just had a look at your Google Scholar page. Nice track record. ;-)
yep :) I am not afraid to say I am one of the leaders in my field, including the huge paper output that comes with that. Actually, that may be a nice post topic, thanks!!
Welcome to our blockchain platform @freyablekman!
You are at least the second person working out there joining us. What a treat and an honour to see you coming in and I already can't wait to see what you are going to share with us. Maybe some particle physics news "Live"?!?
Namaste :)
Thanks! Already I post daily new papers on twitter, that's probably as "Live" as it is going to get for now. But who knows, I look forward to seeing what steemit has to offer :)
From now on, you can post your daily content on Steemit, put the link in your Twitter or simply post on both sites, and you'll find out fairly quickly... As time goes by, people posting quality are bound to be seen read and upvoted by the people who have more Steem Power, voting leverage to give you Steem, and the Steems will stack rounding off your monthly wage very very nicely, not to mention the retirement package! ;)
Namaste :)
I always think it's funny they call it the "Large" hadron collider. It's the ONLY hadron collider. It could be called the itsy-bitsy hardon collider. Now I am wondering about the "compact" moun solenoid. Is there an non-compact? Sub-compact? Luxury moun solenoid? CERN is really, really cool when G+ launched hangouts, I pulled my oldest out of school for the first CERN hangout....6 or 7 years later and he is all about science. Your work has a far-reaching impact☺☺☺
I was heavily involved with those hangouts, both on and off camera, so am delighted to hear you and your son like them!
By the way the name Large Hadron Collider was coined when at least two other hadron colliders were running or being constructed. It just takes 25 years to build these amazingly complicated machines:-)
and I will explain why CMS is "Compact" in a future blog. Relatively it is, amazingly enough.
You are welcome
welcome to steemit.. thanks for sharing your journey!! 🙂

Nice to see you here
Welcome to the community! What a great start!
WELCOME to Steemit. As you can see from the support to your post there is a great community here. Help us grow by using your influence , invest in a community that fits you. Oh, and if you could, please do not create a black hole or pull in any other dimensional beings (e.g. Cloverfeild) while doing it is that ya'll are doing at CERN. RESPECT#SHARKATTACK
Very Nice! you are a lucky person to have that opportunity to work on the greatest technology ever built by mankind! I have a 2 part question, how advanced have the direct test of relativistic time dilation gotten. and Is all your programming done in python and C just curious?
answers:
ps: I am not lucky, I worked bloody hard to get where I am and actually developed parts of that technology.
Welcome to the community and props to you for being so successful already! I wish my introduction made that much noise in the span of 3 Days.
Any ways looking forward to seeing more of you here
A well explained intro.welcome to this new journey.
upvoted!

Thanks honey :-)
Just to give you a warm welcome from myself as well, it's amazing to have you here! I expect nothing but great posts on particle physics, shoes and food :) And thank you sooo much for amazing tour you gave us at CERN, it was once in a lifetime experience!
Hi @scienceangel , I just visited your profile. Quite interesting. I just followed you, I am Dr. Viral Patel, Ph.D. (Microbiology).
Glad you are here. Making friends made it easier 👍👍
It's so cool to have you here!
But then again, looking at how much fun we had together during our visit I can understand how irresistible it must have been to an outsider ;)
But welcome to steemit! Looking forward to see what you'll be sharing here :) And thanks a lot for the amazing job you did during our visit to the CMS!
Thanks! You guys were a fun group to show around, it is a pity we did not have more time, there is plenty of other things to see at CERN. But then it was a last minute visit, normally these things are prepared a few months in advance :)
I will give a few more tours next week and will send around some more cable pics (I like cables too!) after that, there still is plenty you guys could not visit during the #steemSTEM tour!
Dear CERN
If you could stop merging the universes, and creating the Mandella effect, that would be great.
Thanks in advance. LOL :-)
Haha thanks for the advice :-)
You are looking so smart. I want to request you for seeing my post and for voting me as I am new in steemit.
Welcome to Steemit! You'll be a fantastic addition to the steemstem community! I generally write about geology and ecology topics, but I definitely enjoy reading about all the sciences, looking forward to seeing what you talk about!
I also wrote a little guide for new users, hopefully it'll be useful.
@Mountainwashere's Guide for New Users:
Welcome to Steemit! It's got a steep learning curve, but it's worth it in the long run if you keep putting in the time! Just know that it will take quite a while before you start getting attention and followers. The biggest secret to success? Keep posting high quality content regularly, and make sure to search out other people's posts, read them, and give relevant comments.
Tagging is extremely important. Always make sure to use all five possible tags, and to keep them relevant. You can always just tag something "blog" or "photography" or something else really general (so long as it's still relevant) to fill the quota if you need to- most of your tags should be established ones, though one or two less used ones are fine.
Posting more than four times a day can reduce your potential rewards, as well as turning off potential users. (I aim for one post per day most of the time.) Consistency is important, though, so you should try to post often.
Always make sure to attach a photo to your posts! You should also have a finished profile: Write a description, add a profile picture and a banner- neither needs to be a photo of you, necessarily, but you should have something- and set a website.
There are a lot of really good resources out there for plankton and minnows (new users). You should check out the following groups and services, they offer a lot of valuable resources:
@thesteemengine (Check this one out first- they're an extremely supportive group that can help out in a lot of ways.) @qurator (These guys offer an excellent liftime upvote to accounts that post consistent quality content.) @steembasicincome (Another lifetime upvote option.) @steemstem (The biggest and best STEM curation group in the game. If you're interested in writing or reading about science, check these guys out!) @geopolis (A fairly new science curation group, this one's dedicated to the study of the Earth.) @ocd (A curation group that seeks out undervalued new writers.)
And, again, the biggest thing is just patience. Breakout successes are incredibly rare on Steemit- you've got to find your way to success through perseverance and hard work. It takes time, but you'll eventually succeed if you put in the work.
Please feel free to repost this guide on the posts of other plankton & minnows you run into!
Wow, that is really cool! Welcome to Steemit
Is this a good description of your job?
I love your mindset. Thank you for living with science
Hope to enjoy you stay here 👍💚
Your replies indicate that are already welcomed here. You were a hit at the tour and remain so on steemit. Welcome. Hope you enjoy writing here.
